THE SURPRISE
OF A MEGASTAR
“I didn’t want anyone to know when
I’d publish my new album.
I wanted it to come on sale
directly for my fans”
Beyoncé means surprise. Or if not, ask the group of girls who on
a mad night in Miami last January sang along in a karaoke with
the singer and her friend, Kelly Rowland. Imagine that you’re
suddenly on stage with two ex-members of Destiny’s Child,
singing ‘Party’, one of Beyoncé’s greatest hits. After the initial
shock, the fans went mad and started a carrousel of photogra-phs

Just as spontaneously, Beyoncé has surprised us all with the
direct launch on iTunes of her latest album of the same name.
In only three days it became the most-downloaded disk in the
history of the portal and the quickest seller on iTunes: 828,773
downloads throughout the world in just 72 hours. Five days later
‘Beyoncé’ led the sales lists in 104 of the 119 countries that host
the Apple download service.
“I didn’t want anyone to know when I’d publish my new album.
I wanted it to come on sale when it was finished, directly for my
fans”, said the megastar. The disk, designed with a meticulous
prevention plan to avoid ‘spoilers’, includes videos recorded all
over the world, earning it the title of the artist’s first visual album:
“I see the music. It’s more than what I hear. When I’m connected
to something I immediately see an image or a series of images
that are linked to feelings or an emotion, a memory of when I
was little, some thoughts on life, my dreams and fantasies. And
they’re all connected to music”.

BEYONCÉ
HER LIFE, IN A DOCUMENTARY
Behind the rumours and commercial rites that surround any me-gastar,
it seems that Beyoncé has a second layer that makes her
a ‘celebrity’ who is unknown to most of her public. These facets
can be sensed in the documentary ‘Life Is But a Dream’, broad-cast
in February 2013 on the American channel HBO, and one
of the most-watched first showings of the decade. The executive
production of the documentary, already available on DVD, was
by Beyoncé Knowles herself, and it includes unpublished ima-ges
of the spectacular Atlantic City concert. Directed by Ed Bur-ke
and including images taken from the artist’s personal archi-ves,
this is an intimate portrait of Beyoncé in the many registers
of her life: as an international artist, winner of 17 Grammys, busi-ness
woman, and also as an ordinary citizen. During its inaugu-ration
Beyoncé explained how “with this film, I wanted to express
something that I consider basic in life: that nothing is random,
that everything has its raison d’être and that we must be on the
lookout for the small clues that life gives us, to see how the dots
join up, or we’ll lose our chance”.

MRS. CARTER SHOW
But the surprises didn’t stop here, and a week later Beyoncé
first showed the ‘XO’ videos (which annoyed NASA, because
they start with the audio of the Challenger tragedy in 1986) and
‘Drunk In Love’, which she interprets with her husband, rapper
Jay Z. These works, co-directed by the singer, were written du-ring
the first part of her successful tour, the ‘Mrs. Carter Show’,
which circled the world in 2013, and was also announced by
surprise after her spectacular performance in the interval of the
Superbowl.
The name of the tour is a reference to her marriage to Jay Z
(Shawn Carter), and in spite of not programming any concerts in
Spain last year, her fans were relieved when she announced 16
new dates of the ‘Mrs Carter Show’ in Europe in 2014. Of course,
the consolation turned to panic about the quickest way to grab
a ticket for the only concert programmed on Spanish soil: 24
March, in the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona. In a matter of hours,
all 18,000 tickets put on sale were gone. Seeing the promotional
trailer of the tour and with the guarantee of it having earned the
Best Live Performance award at the 2013 MTV Music Awards,
the ‘Mrs Carter Show’ is already being seen as one of the per-formances
of the year in Spain. The artist’s fourth international
tour was announced as support to her fourth album ‘4’, but the
surprise launching of her fifth disk will allow the public to enjoy
her new songs too.
EL SHOW DE MRS. CARTER

Author Eric Hoffer says “in times of change, learners inherit the
earth”. This is the case of the Mexican singer and songwriter
Julieta Venegas. Four years after her latest album came out, a
new her has emerged. “Momentos” (Moments), her new work,
shows a change in direction that has earned her a nomination
for a Latin Grammy in the category of “Best Contemporary Pop
Vocal Album “, an award that could soon add up to the long list
of prizes and international recognition she has achieved so far.
In Spain, the Venegas hurricane landed hard a few years ago.
Although her single “Andar conmigo” tiptoed through the charts,
songs like “Me voy” or “Limón y Sal”, from her self-titled album
released in 2006, hinted hers was going to be a steady career
and not just a one-hit wonder. Its folk tunes and acid lyrics were
the mix she used to captivate the audience, like tequila you can
listen to. Those were also the times of great collaborations, such
that alongside her compatriot Paulina Rubio, on the track “Nada
fue un error” by Argentine composer Coti.

21. JULIETAVENEGAS
Julieta was a precocious talent. Right from her early childhood,
she was obsessed with music, for her there was no plan B. Now
the mother of the little Simona, her life has undergone an obvious
change, which is also reflected in her last album, recorded in
her home studio in the city of México. She has now surprised
her fans with a more electronic sound, even slightly tending to
minimalism and she has definitely abandons her Mexican folk
stly that subtly perfumed her repertoire earlier in her career. Her
lyrics have now become more thoughtful, almost melancholic,
and her repertoire is now sort of “dark and gloomy”, according
to the singer herself, who explores an unusual genre in her ca-reer
and shows how an experience like motherhood has maxi-mized
her sensitivity.
Successful songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Goodwill Ambas-sador
of UNICEF and quite critical with the current situation in
her country, Venegas says the violence in México softened her
way of singing. Although born in Long Beach (California) she
is fully Mexican and has been touring this record, together with
a new band and a different sound. In the next months she will
play in Chile, Argentina and, of course, México. After completing
her long and successful tour around the States, Julieta Venegas
has confirmed that she will take place in the event “Person of
the Year 2013 by Latin Recording Academy”, which this year
pays homage to Spanish singer and actor Miguel Bosé. Alejan-dro
Sanz, Laura Pausini, Draco Rosa and Carlos Vives, amongst
others, will also be attending. Besides all these projects, Julieta
is also in the process of writing songs for the soundtrack of an
animated film to be released in México this year.
PALLADIUM MAGAZINE 21
Aunque nació en Long Beach (Ca-lifornia)

The number of tourists who feel the appeal of Jamaica’s charms
rises every year. This Caribbean destination offers both adven-ture
and relaxation, a combination valued by holidaymakers. As
well as having one of the most spectacular sunsets on the pla-net,
the island of reggae has exuberant tropical vegetation that
inundates the landscape down to where its turquoise waters lap
the shore. A great mountain range runs through it from east to
west, offering boundless opportunities for leisure activities su-rrounded

The days when he worked as a plumber and a taxi driver are
now long gone. Philip Glass has managed to raise the bar of

is always unforgettable. He rejects putting a label on his music
and prefers to call himself “a composer of music with repetitive

films like “Kundun” by Martin Scorsese, or “The Hours” (2002),
which tells the story of three generations of women interconnec-ted
by the novel “Mrs. Dalloway” by Virginia Woolf. He has also
been nominated several times for an Academy Award for his
work on soundtracks.
35. PALLADIUM MAGAZINE 35
The real power of Philip Glass is that it transcends genres, dis-ciplines
and trends. He is the quintessential composer, the pre-sent
incarnation of the perfect pianist, a self-made man who only
lives for music. Those who know him point out his distant way of
being, his expressionless fce and his public distaste for inter-preters
in general and traditional concert halls. Born in Baltimore
(USA) in 1937, he studied at the prestigious Juilliard School of
Dance, Theatre and Music, where he studied along Steve Reich,
who was a great influence for him. It was in the Big Apple where
he started mingling with the artistic elite of the time. Some of
the most outstanding artistic duos include his collaboration with
Nobel Prize for Literature winner Doris Lessing or visual artist Ri-chard
Serra, who not only gave him contact galleries but helped
him break through music and move on to sculptures, films and
installations .
Talking about his accomplishments can become an endless
story of constant conquered lands. From his compositions of
music for piano or symphonic ensembles to more than twen-ty
operas, his artistic life has been based on a comprehensive
explorative journey. He has lectured and played solo piano con-certs
around the world together with countless performances
along the Philip Glass Ensemble. He does not know the meaning
of fatigue and after selling out some of the most prestigious ve-nues
in the world, Glass says, with the severe countenance
which characterizes him, that live sound “is the quintessence of
music, music is not something you experience for yourself, is a
social phenomenon”.

A me-nudo
(contacto permanente, bidireccionalidad, inmediatez, influen-cia
ciudadanos entusiasmados y corresponsables.
Inmediatez, eficacia y transparencia: tres conceptos fundamen-tales

41. “Smart Cities need Smart Citizens “. The definition is by Carlo
Ratti, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology expert. The idea
may seem obvious, but basically it makes all the sense in the
world. We often reduce the concept of Smart City to a purely
technological application; however, the key is managing all that
potential and making it serve the people.
All this was discussed at the recent Smart City Expo World Con-gress
in Barcelona. A world event that revealed that new inter-personal
communication habits (permanent, bidirectional, im-mediate
contact, networked influence and power) are forcing us
to change how we structure our environment. And the big city is
the framework within which this new reality can be constructed.
This will require courageous and daring politicians, a consensus
between public and private economies, and enthusiastic, co-responsible
PALLADIUM MAGAZINE 41
citizens.
Immediacy, effectiveness and transparency: three basic con-cepts
for the city of the future. Immediacy in response means
more effective solutions. But all this will be impossible if we con-tinue
to generate inflated structures, duplication and cumberso-me
bureaucracy.
But beyond the idea of the city as panacea and the unrealistic
amateurism underlying the whole of this intellectual structure,
the undeniable business potential that seduces large compa-nies
and the pure fashion of “smart”, the technical applications
are in fact already in place. They’re called the Internet of Things
or the Real-Time City: the deployment of a slew of devices that
provide instant information on everything that’s going on in the
city.
URBAN
INTELLIGENCE
SMARTCITIES

THE UNITED NATIONS HAS CAL-CULATED
THAT BY 2050 MORE THAN
70% OF HUMAN BEINGS WILL LIVE IN
URBAN CENTRES. BUT IT WON’T STOP
THERE: THEY’RE ALREADY TALKING
ABOUT IMMINENT URBAN DOMINANCE
OF OUR STATES. CITIES MANAGED WITH
TRANSPARENCY AND THE MINIMUM
OF BUREAUCRACY. CITIES WHERE TE-CHNOLOGY
SEEKS TO IMPROVE THE
QUALITY OF LIFE OF ITS INHABITANTS.
CITIES THAT CARE FOR THE ENVIRON-MENT
AND FOR PEOPLE. DEFINING
THEM AND TRACING THEIR COURSE
WAS THE AIM OF THE RECENT SMART
CITIES SUMMIT HELD IN BARCELONA.
42. 42 PALLADIUM MAGAZINE
For some time now air quality sensors have been monitoring the
pollution levels of our cities. Smart systems in power lines have
also been tried out in Italy, Canada and the USA: they cons-tantly
monitor consumption in real time so families and suppliers
can trace energy use and reduce bills or create structured price
plans. In Boston, a free application uses accelerator and GPS
to help drivers detect potholes and obstacles. And many cities
already have smart parking systems to locate free parking.
In Malaga, a new energy business concept has opted for decen-tralised
management and smart networks. This reduces energy
consumption in buildings and transport based on customer in-teraction
and the use of renewable energies. But perhaps the
most spectacular example these days is Smart Santander. The
Cantabrian capital is deploying a series of detectors, sensors,
cameras and mobiles to offer 24/7 information: from weather fo-recast
to traffic, including noise and pollution levels.
Falling back on old Marxist terminology, we could say that the
technological revolution has created new social relationships of
production. But the strength of this new discourse goes beyond
specific benefits for particular sectors. The real Smart City philo-sophy
uses citizens as the conducting thread of the new urban
universe. An active citizenship that seeks and offers collabora-tion,
aims to develop its initiatives, and needs environments that
can empower its creativity. Its cities must also show concern
for the urban environment, integrating different kinds of green
spaces and public services in a more sustainable and intelligent
model.
The Barcelona congress, in its third successful edition, received
input from 400 cities, a top-class collection of experts, and 9,000
registered visitors, 3,000 of whom were delegates. Rio de Janei-ro
was chosen as the best Smart City of 2013 for its long-term
project to become a Smart reference point. And the Japanese
city of Kyoto signed an agreement with Fira de Barcelona to co-organise
the event’s Asian edition in 2014.
Immediacy, effectiveness
and transparency: three basic
concepts for the city of the future

salakof en mitad de la selva con un “Dr. Livingstone, I presume”;
cuando escapó de su mujer diciendo: “Me voy a por taba-co”;
lucía indómito el sombrero de copa en el estreno de sus óperas;

“It’s a small apartment. I’ve barely enough room to lay my hat
and a few friends”, complained Dorothy Parker while drinking
her third Dry Martini, giving due space to that object of fetish,
the hat.
A hat is only ignored by people who don’t have a head. It pro-tects
us from sun and cold and is elegant, sexy and on occasion
symbolic. A hat says a lot about the person who wears it: it gave
the profoundest of clues to Freud in his psychoanalysis, while
Jung dissected it in his dreams.
It has accompanied man since he left the cave, eventually giving
him the distinction to lend an arm to ladies in the vanity fair that
is Ascot Races (but amongst so many frightful sights, most of
whom should have watched My Fair Lady and learned from Rex
Harrison and Audrey Hepburn).
Witchdoctors of old favoured appearing decked out in a feather
headdress, ready for their rituals; explorers Livingstone and
Stanley greeted each other by doffing their Salakots in the
depths of the jungle, with a “Dr. Livingstone, I presume”; Lady
Hamilton lost her florid hats to the sea breeze on the bridge of
the Victory of her beloved Nelson; César de Echagüe, alias El
Coyote, always started off on his adventures with his faithful
Mexican Charro; Charles Chaplin could lose his stick, but ne-ver
his bowler hat; Santiago Rusiñol never forgot his slouch
hat on his escapades from his wife, saying “I’m just going out
to buy tobacco”; Winston Churchill protected himself from the
Mediterranean sun with a broad-rimmed panama hat while he
painted his watercolours; Indiana Jones never lost his Stetson
when exploring archaeological remains; Renoir was even more
Impressionist with his Boater; Picasso liked to put on a Boina
when they brought him sausages and blood sausage from Spain
during his gilded exile; Verdi, undaunted, wore his top hat at the
inaugurations of his operas; the Ibizan fisherman may no longer
have his cigarrillo de pota but never leaves behind his straw hat
when going off to fish in his llaüt…

There are hats for all tastes and cultures, and they will always be
in fashion. The high priests of most religions have their own, and
they know their power.
And what about the peaked cap! There are some rappers and
professional sportsmen, whose names I don’t care to recall, who
even sit down at the table wearing their psychedelic caps, light
years away from the peaked caps of the old sea wolf, but there
are also gorgeous madrileña ladies who make you fall in love to
the rhythm of a chotis...
For it’s women who gain most by wearing a hat on their delightful
heads. It’s rare to find one who doesn’t suit a hat. It’s an adorn-ment
that enhances sexiness and spice, and many men fall for
them to the point that, when the lady undresses, they insist that
she keep her hat on. Who doesn’t dream of Kim Basinger and

La lógica
del placer THE LOGIC OF PLEASURE
He has very clear ideas and a baritone voice that surprises you,
contrasting with his baby face. He defends logic and creativity in
his cooking. He claims he’s insecure, but the force of his words
tells you otherwise. He runs three restaurants in Barcelona and
hasn’t had a holiday for three years. Despite his youth, Jordi
Cruz already has two Michelin stars, is a rising figure in Spanish
haute cuisine, and enhances his growing reputation with intense
TV appearances and just the right dose of rock & roll.
He greets us in mid-afternoon in the incredible garden of the
Àbac restaurant in Barcelona. It’s obvious he’s the brightest star
in that gastronomic firmament. Expressions of pleasure on the
faces of some late-staying diners witness the passion for cuisine
of this media phenomenon.

No me gusta no gustar.
Do you enjoy creating wellbeing?
“First of all, wellbeing for me. What happens is that when you’ve
got a vocation for a job it gives you a thrill, creating new dishes,
locating good produce, treating it with care… If that’s what well-being
is for you, you’ll create it for people who enjoy your work.
Do you know what? My cooking is me. I’m very generous, but
basically also tremendously egotistical. The truth is that I cook
for me, but I also want to get as many people as possible on
my side. I don’t like not being liked. I think I cook so as not to
disappoint more than anything else”.

he pasado media vida justificándome. ¿Cómo? Pues poniendo
¿no?
“Exacto.
solo 20 años no tenía ningún cocinero. Tenían un libro con 20
o 30 recetas y tiraban de eso. No había chispa ni motivación.
Sencillamente, cocinabas, y fuera”.

Talking about disappointments, wasn’t it disappointing, not get-ting
the third Michelin star?
“If I said no I’d be lying. Above all because everyone took it for
granted, and it was hard not to let yourself get carried away by
that current of uncontrollable euphoria. But these decisions are
not in our hands, however much we think we’re worth that award.
Do I want it? Very much. And I’m convinced the third star will
come, because here we’re very stubborn and very pigheaded”.
Even so, you’ve got back the star at Angle, lost after you moved
to Barcelona, and you seem very sure of yourself. So sure, it’s
almost embarrassing…
Even so, you’ve got back the star at Angle, lost after you moved
to Barcelona, and you seem very sure of yourself. So sure, it’s
almost embarrassing…
“What? Really? But I’m such a very small, insecure guy! I’m sure
the image of a sturdy, coherent type that I project is my attempt
to correct that insecurity. I’ve always been labelled a promising
young chef. And in response to all that pressure I’ve spent half
my life justifying myself. How? Well, by always putting a lot of
logic and consistency into all my dishes. We could spend half
an hour talking about each of them. Everything has its reason, it
all makes sense”.
You always talk about logic. Your other magic word is creativity,
isn’t it?
“Exactly. I’m the most creative chef in the world, if you like. But
there’s a man called Ferran Adrià who made us think that being
creative was normal. Eighteen years ago being bored with what
you cooked yesterday was normal”.
Do you think that we still don’t have enough perspective to un-derstand
what El Bulli represented for a whole generation of
chefs?
“No, we’ve got no idea. I think in a way that only 20 years ago, no
chef did. They had a book with 20 or 30 recipes and they drew
on that. There was no spark, no motivation. You just cooked, and
that was it”.

Is it hard going, the post-Bulli stage?
“Don’t get me wrong, all extremes are bad. Ferran Adrià is a
genius, he’s taught us to think differently, given us a different
attitude, a lot of ideas, interesting techniques. But there comes a
time when too much protection is bad. A point at which you have
to give the kid that push so he rides the bike on his own. Now
we’re at that point when it’s difficult and strange to be pulling the
cart ourselves. But we must just get on with it and be ambitious”.
And in this new world so obsessed with health, can you cook
healthily?
“By definition, calling a restaurant gastronomic is an appeal to
excess, because it’s not exactly about diet, but about giving
physical pleasure. But for me it all has a logic: the menu is
constructed. They always say that my restaurant has lots of fish,
lot’s of mushrooms, not much red meat … We eat too much red
meat! That’s a good diet. So we’re not so far apart. The rest is
a question of technique. I’m very technical, extremely technical.
Everything’s very obvious, very simple, very methodical... Tradi-tional,
avant-garde and modern, I sum them up as good or bad
cooking. There are products that call for a modern hand and
others that need tradition”.
But it’s not just cooking, lately you’re everywhere. Especially on
television. Isn’t it all a bit overwhelming?
“I only worry about what I can control as chef, businessman, ma-nager
or communicator where I’m involved. And that basically
means three restaurants in Barcelona, with all that involves, and
taking part in Master Chef, a very worthwhile programme, by
the way. I know how to cook, talk about cooking, being serious
and bossing people around as I do in my kitchens. That’s what I
have to do on television, always remembering that it’s my job to
entertain, not to be boring”.

hiriente. Siempre digo lo que pienso. Y la verdad,
dicha a palo seco, hace daño. Yo peco de eso. Soy muy burro.
A veces simplemente no toca decir determinadas cosas, pero
no puedo evitarlo”.
Some say that at times you go too far with the criticisms…
“That’s true. My friends say I can be very hurtful. I always say
what I think. And coming out with the truth, just like that, hurts.
That’s my weakness. I’m very direct. At times it’s just not the right
time to say certain things, but I can’t help it”.
And how do you control your nerves?
“In the first programmes, it’s true I was very nervous. But I ra-tionalised
my fears by telling myself that the camera was like a
food processor, without those millions of people behind it. Which
can be turned off if you make a mistake, that’s all. For me, going
to record in Madrid is like going on holiday, taking the fast train,
getting out of my normal environment... Great! What’s certainly
true is that you must keep your feet on the ground and not be-lieve
everything they say. Because you go from boy next door to
sex symbol in a flash or to presenting the New Year festivities,
from one day to the next… That’s TV for you”.
By the way, how do you define the concept of rock & roll in the
kitchen? Lately you quote that concept a lot.
“Passion, courage, brains…”.
Three notes, like in the purest rock & roll…
“Exactly. It seems so easy, but combining them to give pleasure
is not for everyone, and you have to work long and hard so they
sound like you want and what the customer demands”.

tosca, infantil o primitiva”.
Attracting the general public with an exhibition of paintings is no
easy task. The financial crisis has dealt a hammer blow to mu-seums
and art centres that largely depend on the patronage of
banks and savings banks. So at least in Spain, bringing together
58 paintings by Paul Cézanne - 49 oils and 9 watercolours, many
so far unseen - is something like a miracle.
You can see the retrospective at the Thyssen-Bornemisza until
18 May, and it also includes nine works by other artists like Pis-sarro,
Gauguin, Bernard, Derain, Braque, Dufy and Lhote.
Born in Aix-in-Provence, Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was the son
of a well-to-do family who wanted him to become a lawyer. In
spite of starting his law studies, he soon moved to Paris to fo-llow
his real vocation: painting. There he got to know Pissarro,
who came nearest to being his master, and soon joined in the
artistic gatherings of the Impressionists at the Café Guerbois,
one of the temples of the Paris avant-garde. From 1863 on Cé-zanne
sent his paintings to the Salón de Paris, then considered
the most important annual or biennial artistic event in the world,
but they were always turned down. Although he only took part
in exhibitions of the Impressionist group a couple of times, the
critics considered him the least adept and most eccentric of its
members, describing his style as “gross, rough, childlike and
primitive”.

In the mid 1870’s Cézanne decided to retire to his native city,
and it was from this distance that he saw his colleagues triumph,
led by Monet and Renoir. His luck changed in 1895, when the
gallery of art dealer Ambroise Vollard recognised the respect
and admiration of his colleagues with a one-man exhibition of
some 150 works. The criticisms he had received twenty years
before turned into eulogies of the originality of his work, and
when he died́ ten years later he was already recognised as a
key figure in modern art.
‘Les pommes’ is in fact considered the work that marked the
birth of modern art, specifically of the Cubism of Picasso and
Georges Braque. There is a curious fact that will scandalise
some: the price of his painting ‘Les Joueurs de Cartes’ beat
all existing records when the Qatari government acquired it in
February 2012 for 191.6 million euros, making it the most ex-pensive
work in history. Another of his most coveted works, the
oil painting ‘Auvers Sur Oise’, has disappeared. The National
Police’s Historic Heritage Brigade has included it on their list of
the most-wanted stolen works of art. Its price: 4.8 million euros.

Derain, Dufy y Lhote

Retrospective in five sections
The subtitle of the exhibition in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Mu-seum,
‘site/non-site’, is taken from artist and theoretician Robert
Smithson, and alludes to the dialectic between the external and
the internal that characterises Cézanne’s work. In fact, the sub-ject
that dominates the artist’s work is the landscape (external),
but unlike the Impressionists, it also rests heavily on a genre
more often found in the studio: Still Life (internal).
The Cézanne retrospective is divided into five sections, with the
first consisting of a single picture: the ‘Portrait d’un paysan’. One
of the last canvases on which the French painter worked before
his death, it represents the continuity between man and nature.
The unpainted face of this old peasant, an enigmatic hollow, has
been interpreted as a self-portrait of the artist who posed himself
before a mirror when he had no model.
The second section focuses on pathways, and particularly on
the curve of the path. Although landscape artists have used this
resource to draw the spectator’s gaze inwards into the picture,
Cézanne’s pathways, located around Aix-en-Provence, do not
lead anywhere and are blocked by trees or rocks that seem like
walls.
The third section of the exhibition brings together scenes with
nudes and landscapes with trees, elements with anthropomor-phic
value in Cézanne’s creations because they form an intimate
combination with the bodies.
The fourth section, known as ‘The Phantom of the Sainte-Vic-toire’,
includes still lives impregnated with the landscape that
surrounded the painter, above all the mountain of Saint-Victoire,
an almost obsessive presence in his work. One of the distinctive
features of Cézanne’s still lives is the enveloping feeling produ-ced
by the table cloths and curtains that cover the table and
walls of the studio.
The last section of the show contains landscapes on which Cé-zanne
imposes a structure similar to the surface of a table. This
was to have a decisive influence on the early phases of Cubism,
represented in the exhibition by works of Braque, Derain, Dufy
and Lhote
