TIA-606B Scope
• Accommodates the scalable needs of telecommunications infrastructure systems
• Deals with commercial, industrial, residential, and data center premises
• Allows modular implementation of different elements of the standard depending
on size of telecommunications infrastructure
• Specifies formats and requirements of records, identifiers, and labels for
infrastructure components

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. [Read Slide]The advantage of a properly labeled infrastructure is that system components can be quickly and accurately identified which will reduce the time to repair and ensure maximum availability of business IT services.
  2. TIA-606-A, originally introduced as TIA-606 in 1993, established guidelines for the administration of telecommunications infrastructure. Using a scalable and modular implementation of different elements of the standard the TIA-606-A specified identifier formats, administration of network components, and the formats and requirements of labels. The identification scheme for a specific connection included the floor and space, rack designation, and port number.TIA-942 was introduced in 2005 to specify the minimum requirements for telecommunications infrastructure of data centers and computer rooms. The standard provided an informative reference to TIA/EIA-606-A for guidance on data center infrastructure administration and labeling. In practice, using TIA-606-A for the administration of data centers was not adequate. The standard did not accommodate the huge amount of structured cabling in a data center. As a result of this limitation an addendum was added to TIA-606-A, known as TIA-606-A, Addendum 1. This addendum, published in 2008, introduced an identification scheme that provided the locations of racks and panels in the data center. In 2012 the TIA-606-B standard was introduced. This completely new standard combines the requirements ofTIA-606A and the Addendum 1 alongwith additional telecommunications infrastructure elements. The standard allows for use of legacy TIA-606-A identifier schemes and provides ISO/IEC compatible identifier schemes for multi-region facilities. Some of the elements of TIA-606-B are the expanded administration of grounding and bonding systems, addressing the use of Automated Infrastructure Management (AIM) systems for administration, and introducing the administration of individual pair groups and fiber strands.
  3. Read Slide
  4. These are the primary identifiers required in a class 1 administration
  5. A telecommunication space (TS) identifier, unique within the building, shall be assigned to the space. The identifier consists of the floor and room or area designation on that floor. In this example the space is located on the second floor in room A. Another example could be 1DC to represent the data center on floor 1.
  6. The floor tile or grid designations are used to identify each cabinet or rack location in the data center. The cabinet/rack location is based on which floor tile the right front corner of the cabinet/rackrests upon.Cabinets and racks should have location labels applied to the top and bottom of both the front and rear of the device. These labels should be visible whether or not doors are closed or opened on the cabinets. This identifier would define that the cabinet/rack is located with its right front corner at the intersection of row AY and column 15.The standard also addresses situations where floor tiles are not in use. For these situations rows and cabinet position in the row can be assigned in the datacenter. For example row B cabinet 3.In telecommunications rooms floor mounted racks and wall-mounted termination blocks can be assigned a sequential number.
  7. The designation for the panel positions in a cabinet/rack can be either an alphabetic designation or a two-digit number that represent the rack unit number (RU) where the top-left mounting screw lands in the cabinet/rack. Using the RU method provides the data center manager with greater flexibility since it allows for panels and equipment to be added or removed later and not disrupt the designation of panel identifiers. This identifier would define that the top left mounting screw of the panel is located at the rack position Bin the cabinet/rack located at the intersection of row AR and column15 in the data center.
  8. Port identifiers are very important in that they will define the connectivity of cabling within the data center infrastructure. If the patch panels are not pre-printed with port numbers then labels will need to be created to identify the port numbers. The numbering sequence should proceed from left to right and top to bottom for all ports on a patch panel. The number of digits used for all numbers on a patch panel should be consistent with the total number of ports on that patch panel. For example a 48-port patch panel should be labeled 01 through 48 and a 144-port fiber panel should be labeled 001 through 144.This identifier defines that this is port 12 located on panel 24 in cabinet/rack AB04.
