Press-in-place seals are static face seals used in automotive and heavy duty applications to seal cast grooves. They have a rectangular cross-section that provides a large sealing contact area and compensates for surface imperfections in castings. Finite element analysis is used to simulate how the seals' self-retaining ribs create interference between the seal and groove wall. The manufacturer designs and cuts the seals for flexibility and to avoid defects from flashing or parting lines.
