2. Introduction
Hydroelectricity is a good source of green
energy. It has been used as an environmental
power source for years and is a good
substitute for coal, oil and gas. Although
there are positive aspects to hydroelectricity
There are also negatives.
3. First of all dams disrupt the major breeding cycles of many river life forms like
the whitebait. Whitebait eggs are laid in swampy estuary’s by adult fish. When
the eggs hatch the larvae swim back up the river where they can develop into
adult fish. But they cannot do that if there is a giant dam in the way. If the fish
cannot make it all the way upstream they cannot develop properly. And if they
don’t develop, they won’t breed. This means that slowly they may die out.
4. They created a solution to this problem though. It
is to create a stairway dam. Since fish already
posses an unmatched jumping ability, it’s easy for
them to jump over the dam this way.
5. Another problem caused by dams is that the
people who decide where the dam is to be
built may forget about perseverance, you see
when a dam is built all the water behind the
dam flows out and forms a lake or reservoir.
6. Another dam disadvantage is the lack of consideration for the land
around where the dam is going to be constructed. When a dam blocks
out a river the river behind the dam starts to fill up and spread out
forming a lake or reservoir. If there is civilisation around the river they
could be forced out, or even worse if no perseverance or warnings are
made to alert the people they could be drowned in the rush, although
this is extremely unlikely it is not impossible.
7. The solution to this problem is to simply avoid
building dams near civilisation, and to persevere
better.
