The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), in association with Indian
and international partners, launched a research center, focusing on
chronic diseases, based in Delhi.
With its secretariat at PHFI, the Centre for Control of Chronic
Conditions (CCCC) in India is a collaboration between the foundation,
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Emory University and
the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). It has
been formed by merging three centers at PHFI -the Centre for Cardio-
metabolic Risk Reduction in South Asia (with Emory University and
AIIMS as partners), the South Asia Network for Chronic Diseases and
the Centre for Mental Health (in a tie-up with LSHTM).

Given that the centres dealt with ailments which have overlapping risk
factors, the authorities decided to bring them together to take an integrated
approach, says D Prabhakaran, vice president, PHFI and director, CCCC. For
example, tobacco, low physical activity and an unhealthy diet lead to four
diseases -heart and lung diseases, cancer and diabetes, which cause 50% of
all deaths worldwide, he says. “Diseases co-exist. About 20-30% diabetic
people have depression.“
The partners host each other's students and staff. For instance, Emory has
loaned a full-time epidemiologist to the centre for three years to begin with.
The collaboration “stems from initial efforts by scientists at the four
institutes to study diabetes, cardio-vascular disease, depression and other
chronic diseases in populations in South Asia, including India, Pakistan and
Bangladesh,“ says James W Curran, dean, Rollins School of Public Health,
Emory University.
