Urban Environment as Narrative System in the UK and China This project will examine urban environments through investigations into the interaction between temporally structured narratives and their spatial configurations, in other words, to investigate how 'space becomes charged and responsive to the movements of time, plot and history.' (Bakhtin, 1981) This project aims at revealing the hidden 'narrative landscape' in urban environments as a collage of narrative strata corresponding to the natural ways of experiencing an environment, namely gaze, route and survey modes. http://www.narrascape.org/ Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 16/09/10 9

So it felt vital to create places around the world for accessing space, resources, connections, knowledge, experience and investment. We've been working across four continents, and 12 cities to create places for people who change things. This is the ambition. We set out to create places that borrow from the best of a member's club, an innovation agency, a serviced office and a think-tank to create a very different kind of innovation environment. Places with all the tools and trimmings needed to grow and develop new ventures. Places to access experience, knowledge, finance and markets. And above all, places for experience and encounter, full of diverse people doing amazing things. We call these places Hubs. In many ways we're just getting started. And we'd like you to be part of it. http://the-hub.net/index.html We're a social enterprise with the ambition to inspire and support imaginative and enterprising initiatives for a better world. The Hub is a global community of people from every profession, background and culture working at 'new frontiers' to tackle the world's most pressing social, cultural and environmental challenges. We believe that there is no absence of good ideas in the world. The problem is a crisis of access, scale, resources and impact. Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 16/09/10 22

Our mantra is “Everyone a Changemaker.”™ Whatever your passions, however you want to make a difference, you’ll find a way to make it happen it here. Changemakers® connects you to action because we’re on the ground, making changes every day. Krista Cameron knew she wanted to be a Changemaker. “I was on a bus going through the downtown eastside (of Vancouver) and was engulfed by the hardship faced in the area,” she recalled. “I felt like my plans to work in impoverished areas in Africa and India were somewhat naïve if I could not even help those in my own city.” She put her newfound desire to act locally together with her passion for dance, and came up with an idea. Changemakers helped her make the Heart Source Dance Program a reality. www.changemakers.com Changemakers® is a community of action where we all collaborate on solutions. We know we have the power to solve the world’s most pressing social problems. We’re already doing it, one project, one idea at a time. How do we do it? We talk about the issues, share stories and mentor, advise, and encourage each other in group forums, even engage in friendly competition. We form surprising connections and unexpected partnerships across the globe that turn the old ways of problem solving upside down. We try things that have never been tried before. The Term affluenza refers to ‘the disease of affluence’ as detailed in Oliver James’ book on the subject. He describes it as a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more. By placing a high value on money, possessions, physical and social appearances, and fame, we fail to distinguish between what we need and what we want. The project as a whole aims to inspire debate and awareness about the destructive impact of consumer values on the emotional wellbeing of society and hopes to suggest some constructive alternatives for the future via series of talks and events. http://www.theaffluenzaexhibition.org The Affluenza Exhibition is a multi-disciplinary visual arts exhibition and series of talks and events taking place in Clerkenwell, London from the 19th – 28th March 2009. Green Charter School Facility Guide Architecture for Humanity is partnering with NCB Capital Impact to create a step-by-step guide for charter schools seeking to integrate green elements into their school facilities. The focus is on assisting charter schools serving low-income communities because they suffer disproportionately from polluted environments and have limited access to resources. For charter schools to operate quality schools in healthy, cost-effective buildings, they need access to affordable green technical assistance and financing options. This publication will provide charter schools with tailored tools, budgets, and available resources on green development and facility upgrades. Architecture for Humanity is a nonprofit design services firm founded in 1999. We are building a more sustainable future through the power of professional design. By tapping a network of more than 40,000 professionals willing to lend time and expertise to help those who would not otherwise be able to afford their services, we bring design, construction and development services where they are most critically needed. Cars and trucks can be replaced by technologies that were invented a century ago and are today fully developed: trains and street cars (trams). The comparatively few people using motor vehicles for their transport impose terrible burdens on their fellow citizens and do not even enjoy particularly fast transport due to the many other cars and trucks competing for space in the relatively narrow streets. This approach restores cities to their rightful place: the center of the human universe, where civility, beauty, and culture abound, in the commercial heart of the city. We must establish a systematic program of solving the world's problems by pushing cars out of the places they do not belong: our city streets. www.carfree.com Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 16/09/10 69

Civic Apps Could Redefine The Way Citizens Interact With Cities BY Clay DillowTue Jul 7, 2009 Though not necessarily heralded as a hotbed of technological innovation, the City of Boston is plunging headlong into what may be the future of civic engagement by debuting an iPhone app connecting residents to city hall. The app, known as Citizen Connect, is the brainchild of a handful of mayoral aides and will allow residents to file complaints with the city by snapping a photo of a problem--a pothole, a fallen tree limb, a neighbor’s overgrown lawn--and sending it to city hall, complete with a geo-tag so city officials can find and fix the problem. About IPCityis a EU funded Sixth Framework programme Integrated project on Interaction and Presence in Urban Environments. The research aim of the IPCity project is to investigate analytical and technological approaches to presence in real life settings. Analytically, this includes extending the approaches to presence accounting for the participative and social constitution of presence, the multiplicity and distribution of events in time and space. Technologically, this translates into developing portable environments for on-site configuration, mobile and light-weight mixed reality interfaces with the ambition to weave them into “the fabric of everyday life”. http://www.ipcity.eu/ Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 79 16/09/10

The National Library of Ireland The National Library of Ireland was established by the Dublin Science and Art Museum Act, 1877, which provided that the bulk of the collections in the possession of the Royal Dublin Society, should be vested in the then Department of Science and Art for the benefit of the public and of the Society, and for the purposes of the Act. An Agreement of 1881 provided that the Library should operate under the superintendence of a Council of twelve Trustees, eight of whom were appointed by the Society and four by the Government; this Agreement also conferred on the Trustees the duty of appointing the officers of the Library. This historic arrangement ended with the establishment of the National Library of Ireland as an autonomous cultural institution on 3rd May 2005 under the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997. Bloomsday Bloomsday is a commemoration observed annually on June 16th in Dublin and elsewhere to celebrate the life of Irish writer James Joyce and relive the events in his novel Ulysses, all of which took place on the same day in Dublin in 1904. Joyce chose the date because his first outing with his wife-to-be, Nora Barnacle happened on that day, when they walked to the Dublin urban village of Ringsend. The name derives from Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Ulysses. Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 16/09/10 84

Jaywalkingis an informal term commonly used in North America to refer to illegal or reckless pedestrian crossing of a roadway. The Phoenix Park The Phoenix Park at 707 hectares (1752 acres) is one of the largest enclosed recreational spaces within any European capital city.  The Phoenix Park was established in 1662 by one of Ireland’s most illustrious viceroys, James Butler, Duke of Ormond, on behalf of King Charles II.  Conceived as a Royal deer park, it originally included the demesne of Kilmainham Priory south of the River Liffey, but with the building of the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham, which commenced in 1680, the Park was reduced to its present size, all of which is now north of the river.

  • 105. While Dublin tourist guides attempt to coach visitors in the pronunciation of the eponymous Dublin greeting, ‘howaya?’ the equally common accompaniment to this – the enquiry, ‘what’s the story?’ reveals the remnants of an oral tradition which is alive and well, while also demonstrating Dubliners’ appetite for the world of books. Ever eager for stories of themselves and others, Dubliners’ sensitivity to literary matters is acute, reinforced by an awareness of the works of the past as much as it is attuned to contemporary offerings – news of which is spread through the media, and through frequent readings, discussions and debates hosted by publishers, universities, libraries, literary organisations, book shops, pubs and cafes. The appreciation of writing and the richness of all its forms and genres is something that Dubliners display as a matter of course. http://www.dublincityofliterature.ie/ Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City 16/09/10 97
