25. Cross-Platform Infrastructure Management
Capability Microsoft VMware
Multi-Hypervisor Management Yes Limited1
Comprehensive Guest OS Support Yes Yes2
3rd Party Management Integration Yes Limited3
Multiple Application Frameworks Yes Yes4
1. vCloud Automation Center focuses on provisioning VMs to alternative hypervisors, whilst the Multi-Hypervisor Manager plug-in for vCenter
offers only very basic capabilities
2. VMware do not produce any operating systems, and support is therefore focused not on the guest operating system itself, but instead, on
the VM Tools and hardware.
3. vCenter Orchestrator has a limited number of 3rd party plug-ins and vCenter Operations Management Suite requires the purchase of 3rd Party
adaptors to integrate.
4. Monitoring capabilities do extend to multiple frameworks but support for many frameworks is out of date - .NET 3.0 is the latest for instance.
Also, the monitoring is not connected to any true DevOps capability, and lacks remediation guidance around detected issues.

No datacenter is an island. Odds are, you run and manage an IT environment today that is deeply heterogeneous, with a wide range of OS, hypervisor, management and development tools in the mix. You want to gain the advantages of private cloud computing, but not if it means walking away from your existing IT investments or adding new layers of complexity. You need to:Leverage existing investments and avoid lock-in Ensure ecosystem support; you want to ensure Maximize development skills and enable choice The Microsoft Private Cloud delivers the following: Multi-hypervisor support , Cross-platform monitoring and Integration across Management toolsets - To help you carry forward your existing datacenter investments and skillsets, System Center 2012 offers integrated management for your heterogeneous datacenter environments. For example, we offer multi hypervisor management with support for Hyper-V, VMware vSphere/ESX and Citrix XenServer (Virtual Machine Manager), cross platform monitoring of Linux/Unix/Sun Solaris guests (Operations Manager) and integrated automation across management toolsets from vendors like HP, CA, BMC, EMC and even VMware (Orchestrator). Extensible infrastructure and management platform – The Microsoft private cloud with Windows Server and System Center, offers an extensible solution with extensive ecosystem support, in line with Microsoft’s long standing approach. Unlike VMware, Microsoft is going to take its approach towards open and extensible architectures into the Hyper-V realm by allowing third parties extend the functionality of the switch. A large number of hardware and software partners that are shipping PowerShell 3.0 cmdlets and those that haven’t released them yet are working to quickly deliver them in the next versions of their products. Finally, System Center has a thriving ecosystem which builds management packs to ensure availability and performance of third party enterprise applications like SAP, Oracle etc. (Microsoft offers management packs for its tier 1 workloads like SQL, Exchange and SharePoint)Open Web platform - Open source software support in Windows Server 2012allows developers to jump-start their development by using a rich set of open source software applications available through the Web Application Gallery. Additionally, Windows Server 2012 supports .NET, PHP, Node.js, and Python enabling developers to freely choose from these multiple languages. Finally, Windows Server 2012 supports HTML 5 which is now becoming a rapidly accepted standard for web applications as well as applications for mobile devices.

I am running VMware vSphere today, but would like to explore using other hypervisors.I need to simplify how I handle virtualization tasks.I don’t want to have different processes for doing the same tasks on different hypervisors. For VMware vSphere, consistency means:Support both standard and distributed virtual switches and port groupsAttach logical networks to associated vSwitchSupport for vMotion and storage vMotionSupport for existing fault tolerant VMsFor Citrix XenServer, consistency means:Simplify virtual switch management by wrapping a single virtual switch around all of the XenServer switches on a single physical adapterSupport for paravirtualized and hardware-assisted virtual machinesSupport for new checkpoint enhancements in XenServerExamples of Simplicity:For VMwareImport vCenter template metadata into VMM libraryDon’t copy entire VMDKDeploy VM through vCenter for faster deployment than with the previous way System Center Virtual Machine Manager deployed VMs through network copy. For XenServerCreate templates in VMM, deploy to XenServerXenServer templates are not used by VMM

To expand on our earlier concepts of integration for better infrastructure management, lets take another step on the specific integration packs that were introduced to simplify management tasks through automation across your cloud infrastructure, whether it be your on-premises Private Cloud, your public cloud (which is powered by Windows Azure) or your service providers cloud.Out of the box, Microsoft provides integration packs for all System Center components, Active Directory as well as some 3rd party technologies that you may have in your environment – IBM, HP and VMware vSphere. With SP1, we’re excited to also offer integration packs for Exchange, Windows Azure as you drive automation out to your public cloud as well as FTP.In addition to IP’s we offer that integrate into 3rd party technologies, we have some great partners that have created IP’s which we support. BMC, Dell, NetApp, Cisco (on a few of their product lines – UCS, NCM), Vision Solutions and Kelverion on a few different product lines (ServiceNow, Data Manipultion which is formerly known as “Transformer” and HTTP Manipulation which is formerly known as “HTTP Messaging”).
