Where to Start?
Do I want a PureFlex System (fully integrated) or a Flex System (piece parts, chassis and rack
hardware integration)?
 Flex System (BTO / CTO) now available in Power and System x
Do I want external V7000 or a Power Node? Configure using e-config & order in Power
Do I want x86 Node or V7000 Integrated Storage Node? You have a choice, do you like the attributes of the
System x pipe or the Power pipe?
− System x: Configure using one of the System x configurators (your choice based on your needs (BTO vs CTO)), order
in XCC or HVEC
− Power: Configure your solution using e-config, order in Power
 PureFlex System now available in Power and System x
Do I want external V7000, Power Nodes, or a Hybrid System (Power & x Nodes)? Configure using e-config
& order in Power
Do I want a x86 only Offering with V7000 Integrated Storage Nodes? You have a choice, do you like the
attributes of the System x pipe or the Power Pipe?
− System x: Configure your solution using x-config order in XCC or HVEC
− Power: Configure your solution using e-config, order in Power

Deciding on an IBM PureFlex Offering:
 PureFlex Express, Standard, or Enterprise:
• How many switches are required (e.g. EN4093)?
• What FoD upgrades are required per switch?
• How many chassis are required?
• What FSM features are required?
• Which Primary Node is required?
• Lab Services requirements?
• Is cost a factor?
 Compare the requirements versus the PureFlex differences

HINTS AND TIPS
© 2012 IBM Corporation
Fourth Chassis Configurations
 4th
Chassis in a PureFlex Configuration
− Even though the FSM can support up to 4 chassis, at present PureFlex
Systems supports 3 chassis, and the 4th
is a custom add-on
− The best method to add the 4th chassis would be a MES, and will not have
the same level of factory integration and additional Lab Services would need
to be added.
− For additional chassis (2nd
, 3rd
, 4th
), additional FSM entitlement is
required.
− Note: with PF (E, Std, Ent) FSM entitlement comes with solution
12

IBM PureFlex System
4th
Chassis in a PureFlex Configuration - Continued
− Additionally, if using PureFlex Standard as your starting point, there are two TOR
SAN24B-4 switches, each with only 8 ports active.
− The default cabling in Standard is that 2 ports from each chassis FC switch and 2 ports
from the V7000 Ctlr uplink to each TOR SAN24B-4. Total 8 ports utilized on each
SAN24B-4.
− The 16 port activation on each TOR SAN24B-4 switch only kicks in when there is a 2nd
V7000 Ctlr as two additional ports per SAN24B-4 are required for this extra V7000.
− So when adding a 4th chassis, you have to consider that the switches in this 4th chassis
also need to uplink to these default SAN24B-4. Therefore, you may (if you do not already
have a 2nd V7000 Ctlr) need to add an 8-port upgrade to activate all 16 ports per
SAN24B-4 switch to allow connectivity of the switches within the 4th chassis.
13

IBM PureFlex System
 2nd
EN4093 in PureFlex (Express or Standard)
− Adding a 2nd EN4093 switch to a chassis is possible but will be
considered a Custom Expansion/MES to the PureFlex solution.
• Will not have the same level of factory integration.
• Additional cabling/transceivers will be needed to help
integration.
• Additional Lab Services would need to be added.
 V7000 compulsory drives
− Two SSD’s are compulsory in the V7000.
− Additional HDD drives are defaulted based on primary node
14
© 2012 IBM Corporation
IBM PureFlex System
 When you configure 2nd
Storwize controller (expansion storage controller), e-config
requires a 2nd
chassis be added
− If a second 2076-124 is required but the expansion chassis is not desired, then the
second 2076-124 must be ordered as a Custom Expansions order. However, this means
that the second 2076-124 will not be factory integrated.
 Order Compute node ‘System Guides’ documentation on one node only.
− Create two Compute nodes, one with and one without documentation. Then use QTY
function on the one without documentation. Also, you can use the Copy Product feature,
then delete documentation on subsequent nodes.
15
© 2012 IBM Corporation
IBM PureFlex System
 Switching from one edition to another in e-Config (Express to Standard, for
example) is not possible. If customer's requirements has changed, a new
edition from scratch will need to be configured.
 Is a MES upgrade possible for a customer that did not purchase their Flex
Chassis from e-Config / AAS?
− There isn’t a MES option to add power ITE’s to a chassis ordered via HVEC or
XCC paths, use the Power BTO MES process.
 InfiniBand (IB) switches cannot be inserted, PureFlex implementation has
minimal requirements for 10Gb Ethernet and for 8Gb/16Gb FC switches.
− Working as designed. Use HPC Starter Kit or RPQ to use IB.
 Consider fully populating Chassis with all 6 Power Supplies and with the 8
Fans to easily accommodate future node purchases.

Be aware of ‘AAS Order SIU limit’ on large configs (e-Config only)
© 2012 IBM Corporation
AAS Order SIU limit - Continued
• CFReport or the XML can not be
used for ordering.
• You can save cfr, XML, TXT, etc.
formats for quoting.
• This occurs when there are 30
systems in a configuration.
•The ordering system can’t order
more than 30 system units in a
single order
• It is an AAS limit of 30 system
units
© 2012 IBM Corporation
AAS Order SIU limit - Continued
 Additional steps are needed to order the configuration. Work with your order entry
representative using AAS splitting
CFR Splitting for AAS
 Open Command Shell and type ‘cfrsplit’
 Browse to the location of the cfr you need to split.
 Produces three or more CFR files used for ordering
purposes only.

e-config: Built-to-Order Flex System - directly shown in e-config now
 Individual components can be mixed,
matched, and fully utilizable with
optional management.
 Components configured based on the
normal technical & e-Config rules - Not
according to Edition Solution
requirements
 No Software will be preinstalled on
Compute Node
 Field merge will be required for
Storage Controllers, Storage Expansion
Units, Switches, etc.

IBM Global Financing offers customized lease and loan options with highly competitive rates, flexible terms and the ability to offer multiple-period
financing for the full solution—including consulting services, software and hardware from IBM and non-IBM IT suppliers.
[1] IBM Global Financing offerings are provided through IBM Credit LLC in the United States, Canada and other IBM subsidiaries and divisions worldwide to qualified commercial and government clients. Rates and availability are based on a client’s credit rating, financing terms, offering type,
equipment and product type and options, and may vary by country. Non-hardware items must be one-time, non-recurring charges and are financed by means of loans. Offer applies to fair market value (FMV) lease only. Interest accrues during the deferral period. Deferred payment period up to 90
days for PureApplication and PureData, and up to 180 days on qualified PureFlex deals. Other restrictions may apply. Rates and offerings are subject to change, extension or withdrawal without notice. Available on select systems. THIS OFFERING MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL COUNTRIES.
[2] Represents Net Present Value savings over a 36 month period for an IT infrastructure Fair Market Value lease, "best credit" customer. Current IBM Global Financing monthly rates for IBM hardware used to calculate present value savings. Savings can vary according to hardware platform. *

  • 9. © 2012 IBM Corporation List of MTs: 4Q12
  • 10. © 2012 IBM Corporation Deciding on an IBM PureFlex Offering:  PureFlex Express, Standard, or Enterprise: • How many switches are required (e.g. EN4093)? • What FoD upgrades are required per switch? • How many chassis are required? • What FSM features are required? • Which Primary Node is required? • Lab Services requirements? • Is cost a factor?  Compare the requirements versus the PureFlex differences 10
  • 11. © 2012 IBM Corporation Configuration HINTS AND TIPS
  • 12. © 2012 IBM Corporation Fourth Chassis Configurations  4th Chassis in a PureFlex Configuration − Even though the FSM can support up to 4 chassis, at present PureFlex Systems supports 3 chassis, and the 4th is a custom add-on − The best method to add the 4th chassis would be a MES, and will not have the same level of factory integration and additional Lab Services would need to be added. − For additional chassis (2nd , 3rd , 4th ), additional FSM entitlement is required. − Note: with PF (E, Std, Ent) FSM entitlement comes with solution 12
  • 13. © 2012 IBM Corporation IBM PureFlex System 4th Chassis in a PureFlex Configuration - Continued − Additionally, if using PureFlex Standard as your starting point, there are two TOR SAN24B-4 switches, each with only 8 ports active. − The default cabling in Standard is that 2 ports from each chassis FC switch and 2 ports from the V7000 Ctlr uplink to each TOR SAN24B-4. Total 8 ports utilized on each SAN24B-4. − The 16 port activation on each TOR SAN24B-4 switch only kicks in when there is a 2nd V7000 Ctlr as two additional ports per SAN24B-4 are required for this extra V7000. − So when adding a 4th chassis, you have to consider that the switches in this 4th chassis also need to uplink to these default SAN24B-4. Therefore, you may (if you do not already have a 2nd V7000 Ctlr) need to add an 8-port upgrade to activate all 16 ports per SAN24B-4 switch to allow connectivity of the switches within the 4th chassis. 13
  • 14. © 2012 IBM Corporation IBM PureFlex System  2nd EN4093 in PureFlex (Express or Standard) − Adding a 2nd EN4093 switch to a chassis is possible but will be considered a Custom Expansion/MES to the PureFlex solution. • Will not have the same level of factory integration. • Additional cabling/transceivers will be needed to help integration. • Additional Lab Services would need to be added.  V7000 compulsory drives − Two SSD’s are compulsory in the V7000. − Additional HDD drives are defaulted based on primary node 14
  • 15. © 2012 IBM Corporation IBM PureFlex System  When you configure 2nd Storwize controller (expansion storage controller), e-config requires a 2nd chassis be added − If a second 2076-124 is required but the expansion chassis is not desired, then the second 2076-124 must be ordered as a Custom Expansions order. However, this means that the second 2076-124 will not be factory integrated.  Order Compute node ‘System Guides’ documentation on one node only. − Create two Compute nodes, one with and one without documentation. Then use QTY function on the one without documentation. Also, you can use the Copy Product feature, then delete documentation on subsequent nodes. 15
  • 16. © 2012 IBM Corporation IBM PureFlex System  Switching from one edition to another in e-Config (Express to Standard, for example) is not possible. If customer's requirements has changed, a new edition from scratch will need to be configured.  Is a MES upgrade possible for a customer that did not purchase their Flex Chassis from e-Config / AAS? − There isn’t a MES option to add power ITE’s to a chassis ordered via HVEC or XCC paths, use the Power BTO MES process.  InfiniBand (IB) switches cannot be inserted, PureFlex implementation has minimal requirements for 10Gb Ethernet and for 8Gb/16Gb FC switches. − Working as designed. Use HPC Starter Kit or RPQ to use IB.  Consider fully populating Chassis with all 6 Power Supplies and with the 8 Fans to easily accommodate future node purchases. 16
  • 17. © 2012 IBM Corporation Be aware of ‘AAS Order SIU limit’ on large configs (e-Config only)
