Black History Month:
African Folktales (2 to 5 years)
Celebrate Black History Month by watching puppet
shows based on African folktales. Make an African
craft to take home.

Black History Month: Freedom Quilt
(all ages - children, teens & adults)
Many African slaves traveled from America to Canada
through the Underground Railroad in secret. How
did they know how to escape to freedom? People
who worked and traveled on the Railroad used secret
codes to learn the routes from one safe place to the
next. These secret codes were hidden in Quilts.
Pick-up your paper quilt square at any Pickering
Public Library branch or downloand it from the website
at www.picnet.org/contests. Decorate your quilt
square and drop it off at any branch from January 19
to February 23. The quilt squares will be combined to
make paper quilts and hung in the Library.
The draw will take place on February 27. All entries
will be entered in a draw for a prize basket.
Black History Month:
Freedom Quilt (9 to 12 years)
Learn how secret messages were hidden in quilts to
help slaves escape to freedom on the Underground
Railroad. Make your own quilt square to add to the
Library’s freedom quilt.

Short Story Contest (JK to grade 12)
Do you enjoy writing? If so, submit a story for the Library’s March Break Short Story Contest. This year we
want you to choose your favourite character and write a story about them. The story can be no longer than
two pages. The font size, if typed, must be at least 12 points.
Entries will be divided into the following age categories: JK- SK | grades: 1 - 2 | 3 - 4 | 5 - 6 | 7 - 8 | 9 - 12
Writers are encouraged to submit their story by email to kids@picnet.org or they can drop off their story to
any Pickering Public Library Branch by March 22. A fully completed entry form must accompany each story.
The entry form can be picked up at any Library branch or downloaded at www.picnet.org/contests. Writers
must have their own valid Pickering Public Library card.
Winners of a prize draw for each category will be announced on the website at www.picnet.org/contests on
April 10th. All winning entries will be published on the Library’s website and social media channels.

Durham Master Gardeners presents Xeriscaping
(Gardening Series Part 1 of 2)
In our urban environments it
is becoming important that we
learn how to conserve water.
The goal of xeriscaping is to design and create
gardens that can survive dry periods on their own
without supplemental watering or fertilizing. This
presentation by the Durham Master Gardeners will
help you understand how to conserve water in the
garden and select and maintain the right plants.
Rain gardens will also be discussed.
Beerology with Mirella Amato
Mirella Amato, Canada’s first master
cicerone, is coming to the Pickering
Public Library! What is a master
cicerone, you ask? It is an individual
who is an expert in beer! Mirella will
be hosting a beer basic course where
seven contrasting craft beers will be
sampled. During the sampling, Mirella
will instruct participants on the variety
of craft beers on the market today and
how to enjoy beer.
Registration is required.
This event is for adults aged 19 and older.
Durham Master Gardeners
presents Pollinators and Native
Plants (Gardening Series Part 2 of 2)
This workshop, presented by the Durham Master
Gardeners, focuses on pollinators. They will discuss
what pollinators are, why they are important, and
the threats that are affecting them.
Good gardening practices for pollinators, including
the use of native plants, will also be discussed.

Editing Photos
Learn the basics of photo editing and manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. This
workshop will help you with cropping, enhancing and improving colour and contrast,
correcting white balance, adjusting angles, fixing tears and rips, and more. Sample
photographs will be supplied.

3D Modelling Using Blender
Learn the fundamentals of 3D Modelling using Blender, a free and open source 3D modelling and
animation software. Learn all about basic 3D concepts such as meshes, vertices, edges and faces. Workshop
will also focus on the Blender user interface and you will learn how to design a very basic 3D model.

Open Source
Learn more about open source software and hardware, what it is and what are some of
the advantages to running free and open software. Alternative operating systems for your
PC such as Linux will be demonstrated, as well as examples of free and open software
you can download and use on Windows or Macintosh based systems. This workshop will
be a demonstration only.
