Károly Takács – “Man with the only hand”
• Károly, was a part of the Hungarian army and by the age of 26,
he had won various national shooting championship. His goal
was to become world’s greatest shooting hand. So he started his
preparation for the Olympic events of 1940.
• Unfortunately, during army training in 1938, a faulty grenade
exploded in his right hand. As a result his right hand, the one
which he used for shooting, got seriously injured.
• After one month, he started his training again, but this time with
his left hand. In 1939, he participated in national shooting
championship, and to the surprise of his competitors, won the
event.

• Olympic games of 1940 and 1944 got cancelled due to
second world war, he then shifted his focus on the next
Olympic event of 1948. He continued his practice and
entered the event with full confidence. By that time he was
38 years old and all his competitors were quite younger,
competing with their best hands.
• Károly bravely competed and shocked the world by winning
the gold medal in the 25 metre rapid-fire pistol event, with
his only hand.
• But, he didn’t stopped here. He went on to take part in the
next Olympic event of 1952 and again won the gold medal
at the age of 42.

Why do you think Karoly Succeed?
HE HAD A CLEAR GOAL
AND A WILL TO SUCCEED
To achieve anything worthy in life one needs a clear goal and a
will to work towards that goal with full determination to
succeed.
The more clear you are with your goals, the more likely you are
to achieve it because when your vision is clear, your fears
become irrelevant.

What is GOAL?
A GOAL IS A DESIRED RESULT THAT A PERSON PLANS AND COMMITS TO ACHIEVE.
We often think that a “goal” has to be something big. It could not be necessarily buying a house or a car, but it
could also be something which might matter to no one in the world except you.
A “goal” is simply something which you’d like to do or achieve. They are those things that we get really excited
about. It could be anything!
A short term goal is something you want to do in the near future. The near future can mean today, this
week, this month, or even this year. A short-term goal is something you want to accomplish soon.
A long term goal is that goal which takes a long time to achieve.
For example,
• I want to reach and maintain a healthy weight
• I want to have a meaningful life
• I want a good relationship with my partner (family/kids/etc)
• I want to work in a job I love
6. Write down one thing that
you really enjoy,
whatever comes into your mind the first
and turn them around to find your
goals!

What is SMART GOAL?
9
SMART goal represents the criteria for setting the objectives that enable a clear understanding of the aim and
increase significantly the probability of achieving it!
10. JensMartensson
Why your goal has to be SPECIFIC?
10
Because you have to know exactly what do you want!
By figuring out exactly what you want, you can set the right goal and can take concrete steps towards it
otherwise your actions will be vague and inconsistent.
For Example:
“I want to loose weight” or “I want to loose 5 kilos of weight in 5 months”
In the first case, the goal is abstract and it is difficult to start to achieve it. It is almost impossible to make a step-by-
step plan to get to this goal.
On the other hand, the second objective is well formulated and specific. And the most important it is concrete and
positive. You know exactly that you need to reduce and maintain your weight by 1kg monthly.
A SPECIFIC GOAL CAN ORGANIZE OUR THOUGHTS AND HELP US TO MAKE A DETAILED PLAN
TO REACH IT.

Why your goal has to be MEASURABLE?
11
Because you need to make sure that you are moving forward!
Without measurement, you would not be sure if you are making progress or not. You would not be able to see if
you are doing something wrong or maybe you have to do something faster.
For Example:
“I want to read this book” or “I want to read 50 pages of the book a day”
In the first case, your goal is ill-defined and unmeasurable. It would be very difficult to quantify your objective and
track your success.
While in the second case, your goal is specific and measurable. You can easily track your achievement. If you read
just 45 pages a day, it means that you didn’t achieve your goal. Measurable goal makes your objective more clear and
simple.
THE MEASURABLE GOALS GIVES YOU A MOTIVATION AND SENSE OF PERSONAL
SATISFACTION WHEN YOU ACHIEVE SOMETHING, EVEN IF IT IS SMALL.

12
Why your goal has to be ACHIEVEABLE?
Because you have to be sure that it is possible to reach that goal.
However, it doesn’t mean that you have to set just small goals for yourself. You can and you have to set big goals
to motivate yourself and find inspiration. You have to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses.
Let’s look at one example:
If you want to play basketball professionally but you are short you have to always work on your weakness
because compare to other players you will have a disadvantage. This will sometimes give you frustration and you
will lose the satisfaction from the game.
On the other side, if you start doing gymnastics – your height will be your advantage because you can be more
coordinated and fast.
Ask yourself what are you doing good? What you can make better than the others? The answers to these questions will
give you the direction for your thoughts and will help to choose the right goal.
THE ACHIEVABLE GOALALSO CALLED AS "ASPIRATIONAL" GOALS. THE GOALS THAT INSPIRE
YOU TO WAKE UP EVERY MORNING AND GIVE YOU POWEREFULAND THE ENORMOUS AMOUNT
OF ENERGY TO GROW, TO LEARN.

13
Why your goal has to be REALISTIC?
Because your goal has to be in the realm of reality i.e. it should represent the real task.
If you say, you want to earn a million overnight without doing anything, your goal would be quite unrealistic and
therefore their realization is problematic.
Here I remember one story about the origin of Marathon race,
The idea for the modern marathon was inspired by the legend of an ancient Greek soldier who raced from the site of
Marathon to Athens, a distance of about 40 kilometers, to report their victory over the army of Persians in 490 B.C.
After making his announcement, the exhausted soldier collapsed and died.
Despite the fact that he made something almost unrealistic – he paid a great price for it.
YOU CANNOT ACHIEVE UNREALISTIC GOALS OR EVEN IF YOU REACH THEM YOU WILL PAY FOR
THEM WILL YOUR HEALTH, RELATIONSHIPS OR SOMETHING ELSE.
REALISTIC GOALS ARE ACHIEVABLE AND WE SHOULD MOVE GRADUALLY THROUGH EACH AND
EVERY STEP WITH CLEAR PROGRESS.

Why your goal has to be TIMELY?
Because your goal needs a deadline to be accomplished as it gives you a pressure to focus properly!
In the research conducted at University Of California, it was shown that deadline is a very important
motivational element.
When one set of students were given less time to finish the task, they finished it faster as opposed, to the other set of
students who were given more time to complete the same task, they tend to slow down the working tempo and ended
up with procrastinating and stretching the tasks.
Lets look at the story of
Greek labor named "Heracles". He was given a challenge to clean the dung from the stable of 1000 cattle in one day.
This task was considered as impossible by others because nobody cleaned it in last 30years.
The most incredible thing was he did it! He redirected the flow of rivers in the region towards the stables and
the water cleaned out all the dirt.
THE TIME PRESSURE WILLALWAYS CHALLENGE YOU AND HELPS YOU TO LOOK FOR
SMARTER POSSIBILITIES.
