Stephen O’Malley argues that attracting and retaining talented people depends on urban enjoyment and lifestyle. As more people globally become wealthier, they will choose locations based on pleasure as well as productivity. Examples of cities that attract talent through public spaces and culture are given, such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, and Lyon in Europe. In the UK, Covent Garden and the South Bank in London also attract talent through business and culture. Improving walking and cycling infrastructure and reducing barriers could enable more local trips by sustainable transport. Currently, 45% of peak trips are less than 5km but routing and parking difficulties discourage active travel.
