Musk Ave, Kelvin Grove - Brisbane QLD
2.1 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ The city is a public place

▸ The city is a unique and
    highly complex system.
▸ It’s held together and
    structured around quality
    public spaces amenities
    and institutions.
▸ The city maximise choices
  and opportunities
▸ It is like a political system
    - enriching, liberating and
    enhancing our
    opportunities

Stewart Rd, Ashgrove, Brisbane, QLD, AUS
2.1 PLACE PRINCIPLES

“Urban transport is a political and
not a technical issue. The technical
aspects are very simple. The difficult
decisions relate to who is going to
                   benefit from the models adopted.”
Enrique Peñalosa, Mayor of Bogota (1998-2001)

                       http://www.bikewalklincolnpark.com/2011/11/bike-lanes-bus-lanes-democracy-in.html
2.2 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ Permanent (existing and
    future) residents and
    workers should have
    priority

▸ A place will be only as good
    for everyone else (tourist,
    visitor or short term resident)
as it is for the people who
    live and work there

▸ Engwicht Secret 1 – Make
    people feel at home

▸ Participant vs Spectator

                                      Victor Harbour, SA, AUS
2.3 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ Urban Manners

▸ Our actions and decisions affect
    others as well as ourselves.

▸ Positive outcomes and any possible
    negative effects are distributed
    equitably.

▸ Inclusiveness and interaction.

▸ Interaction, even among strangers,
    exposes people to cultural diversity.

▸ Engwicht Secret 8 – Reverse the
    psychological retreat

▸ “change happens with one front
    yard at a time”

Street (garage) sale - my street, Bardon, Brisbane, QLD, AUS
2.3 PLACE PRINCIPLES
2.4 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ The domain of people is the ground.

▸ Many of us come to know cities or towns through the use of the private car.
▸ However, decisions which affect the form and function of cities and towns must be
    related to the pedestrian experience.
▸ After all this is how we interact with the city and each other.
▸ Enrique Pendalosa

“Any place worth its
salt has a parking
problem”
                          James Castle
              (Think Exist.com, 1999-2009)

                                                                      Swanston St, Melbourne, VIC, AUS
2.5 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ Landowner’s rights and responsibilities

▸ In return for the enjoyment of those rights, landowners
must also accept and exercise some responsibilities.

▸ The benefit should never be at the expense of the
    public domain.

Mizner Park - Boca Raton USA
2.6 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ The city / town is a
  (market) place
                                “Cars are happiest when
                                there are no other cars
▸ Public places were the
    setting of an infinite around.
    number of exchanges...
                                People are happiest
▸ While minimising the need
for movement or travel when there are other
    (food desert) people around.”
▸ However, more people are Dan Burden
    now exchanging goods (http://www.pps.org/articles/dburden/)

    and services over the
    internet.

▸ Cities are now competing
    to attract visitors and
    creative people.
                                           Barossa Farmers Markets, SA, AUS
2.7 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ The built environment is
    meaningful and
    communicates

▸ It speaks of and reflects
    our culture, community
    values, aspirations and
    achievements
▸ It reflects us
▸ The meanings that
    individuals take from
    those impressions are the
    substance of humanity
▸ We have a duty of care to
    create places for the
future well being of all the
    inhabitants
                                   GPO – Brisbane, QLD, AUS
2.8 PLACE PRINCIPLES
▸ The whole is greater than the
    sum of the parts

▸ Parts need to be judged on
    how they contribute to making
    the whole city better.

▸ Every part is important - the
    city is a collective...

▸ It is a grouping and a
  relationship of the large and
  the small.

▸ Sometimes the least significant
    action or influence, over time
    becomes formative
    and highly significant

Bank Place - Melbourne, VIC, AUS
2. PLACE PRINCIPLES
                      1. The city is a public place

                      2. Permanent (and future) residents
                         and workers should have priority

                      3. Urban Manners

                      4. The domain of people is the
                         ground

                      5. Landowner’s rights and
                         responsibilities

                      7. The built environment is
                         meaningful and communicates

                      8. The whole is greater than the
                         sum of the parts

Latrobe Tce - Paddington, Brisbane, QLD
2. PLACE PRINCIPLES – HARBOR TOWN
2. PLACE PRINCIPLES – NEIL SAVERY
2. REFLECTION
▸ Individual – group: short answer
  test p156
2.5 Which of the place principles means
       the most to you?
        Why?

▸ Group Discussion
▸ How are these reflected in your
        organisation?
▸ Do you disagree with any?

▸ Field: Placecheck
