  Location – 18.443 deg. N, 72.571 deg. W;
  in the boundary between Caribbean plate
  (moving eastward with respect to)
  North American plate.
  Depth – 13 km
  Distance – 25 km. WSW of Port-Au-Prince,
  Haiti

No. of Deaths : 2,22,570
No. of people injured : 3,00,000
No. of people displaced : 13 lakhs
Houses destroyed : 97,294
Houses damaged : 1,88,383
Estimated economic loss : $7.8 billion

1751 A.D.(Port-au-Prince) : Almost all
  masonry buildings completely
  collapsed
1770 A.D. (Port-au-Prince) : Magnitude
  7.5; over 200 people killed
1842 A.D. (Cap-Haitien) : 10,000 people
  killed
1946 A.D. (Dominican Republic) :
  Magnitude 8.0; 1600 people killed in

Causes of the Catastrophe:


 Focus very close to the ground (only 13 km from
ground surface)
 Most houses poorly constructed, building
codes not properly followed
 Dense urban environment
 Lack of Earthquake preparation (People in some
earthquakes have saved lives after getting alarm
from warning systems)
 Lack of proper rescue and relief (China mobilized
its military effectively to save many lives)

What can we learn from it?

 We have similar infrastructures and haphazard
urban development
 Building codes are not properly followed
 Our only international airport has no Earthquake
emergency plan (The airport in Haiti was only half
functioning at the time of Earthquake)
 Our economical condition is too low to provide
immediate relief in case of disasters
