I'd love to tell you a story about how the software I created helped my community. Sadly, I can't: nothing I built ever found an audience. This talk is about how I failed to reach a community, about why it doesn't matter - or rather: what I learned from being stuck in an open source team of one. For years I was convinced that the success of an open source project was determined by the usefulness of the software. My imaginary blueprint of open sourcing was: Build something useful Open source it Everybody wins It turns out that it is much harder than that. This talk is about how I built several tools that would help the UX community to deliver awesome products with a great experience, while never finding an audience for the tools. We'll look at all the mistakes one can make and what to do instead to build a thriving community. And even if you don't find an audience: Zero adoption does not mean zero value. We'll look at how there is great benefit in building and publishing things, if not for others then for yourselves.

Presented at Troopers 2016. When Infosec and Digipres share interests... TL;DR - Attack surface with file formats is too big. - Specs are useless (just a nice ‘guide’), not representing reality. - We can’t deprecate formats because we can’t preserve and we can’t define how they really work - We need open good libraries to simplify landscape, and create a corpus to express the reality of file format, which gives us real “documentation”. - Then we can preserve and deprecate older format, which reduces attack surface. - From then on, we can focus on making the present more secure. - We don't need new formats: reality will diverge from the specs anyway - we need 'alive' (up to date, traceable) specs.

You’ll see how at Liefery, we started with small steps instead of rewriting everything. This allowed us to reap the benefits earlier and get comfortable before getting deeper into it. We’ll examine in detail the tactics we used to create two Elixir apps for new requirements, and how we integrated them with our existing Rails code base. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
