Form
With modal verbs
We must find a name for this baby soon.(active)
Names must be found for all of them.(passive)
They can’t have seen the comet yet.(active)
Otherwise, the fact would have been reported.(passive)
Note
Passives are not usually used with continuous perfect
forms. They are felt to be too heavy.
So we can say:
People have been building cities for 7,000 years.
But we would avoid saying:
Cities have been being built for 7,000 years.
Use
As the examples above show, the passive also allows us
not to mention who did the action. The passive is
useful if we don’t know, don't care or don’t say who or
what did an action. The passive focuses on processes
rather than people, so frequent use can sound dry and
formal. It is often found in scientific and other formal
writing.
Use
The passive can only be used with transitive verbs, that
is,verbswhich can take a direct object. It cannot be
used with intransitive verbs (arrive,sleep,rain,die
etc.)Where the verb has two objects, including a
person as indirect object, this indirect object usually
becomes the subject in a passive sentence.
My uncle sent me a large parcel.(active)
I was sent a large parcel by my uncle.(passive)
Transitive verbs and intransitive
verbs
I moved the chair.
The bird sang.
Transitive verbs are action verbs that have an object to
receive that action. In the first sentence above, the
direct object chair received the action of the
verb moved.
Intransitive verbs are action verbs but unlike transitive
verbs, the do not have an object receiving the action.
Notice there are no words after the verb sang.
C.A
Decide whether the following sentences are written in the active or passive voice.
Then write the doer of the action on the line to the right. If the doer is unknown,
write a question mark (?).
1) ) Thomas feeds his dog. active / passive ____________
2) ) The dog is fed by Thomas. active / passive ____________
3) ) The family went to the beach. active / passive ____________
4) ) The letter was written by Marshall. active / passive ____________
