Dear Madam Speaker
RESIGNATION OF MS BERNEDETTE MUTHIEN AS A NON- EXECUTIVE MEMBER OF THE
BOARD OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION (SABC)
The above subject refers.
This serves to inform the Honourable Speaker that on 2 June 2020, the Ministry received, through
the Office His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa, a letter from Ms Bernedette Muthien resigning
as a non-executive director of the board of the SABC.
In her letter, Ms Muthien requested to resign her office with effect from 1 June 2020. Ms Muthien
was appointed by the Honourable President to the board of the SABC in terms of section 13(1) of
the Broadcasting Act (Act No. 4 of 1999) on 11 April 2019. Her term of office was due to expire on
15 October 2022. The Presidency has since accepted her resignation.
I had referred the matter to the Deputy Minister as she has delegated authority over SABC, to
engage Ms Muthien in order to ascertain if there are any interventions or support the shareholder
could employ in ensuring efficiency and full functionality of the board of the SABC.
2. Your esteemed office is requested to take note of the resignation and, if considers it timely and
appropriate, to initiate the recruitment process, in terms of the of the Broadcasting Act (and other
applicable laws), to fill the vacancy that arises on the board of the SABC as the result of the
resignation of Ms Muthien. The appointed board member should hold office for the remaining period
of their predecessor’s term of office in line with section 13(8) of the Broadcasting Act, which ends on
15 October 2022.
Yours sincerely,
