Objective:
Monday
Students will sketch and label the structures of a chloroplast
Students will sketch and label the structures of mitochondria.
Students will correctly write the overall chemical reaction for cell
respiration AND photosynthesis.
Students will compare and contrast photosynthesis and cell respiration.
Students will summarize the purpose of both cell respiration and
photosynthesis.
Tuesday-Thursday
Students will list the phases of the cell cycle and describe the general
sequence of events that takes place in each phase
Students will distinguish between interphase and mitosis
Students will list the phases of mitosis and describe the events
characteristic of each phase
Students will recognize the phases of mitosis from diagrams or
micrographs
Friday
Students will examine and illustrate the chloroplasts in a leaf cell.
Students will sketch the materials used by plants to make food.
Students will create a chart that compares the reactants and products of
photosynthesis and respiration.
Students will model the pathways of water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide
through a plant.
Students will summarize the movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide
between living things and the environment.
Students will diagram structures that animals use to obtain oxygen
Materials Needed:
Pencil/pen, paper, textbook,
science and engineering
notebook, note card( supplied
by teacher)
Tool Box/Academic Vocabulary:
Monday
Cellular respiration, photosynthesis, product, reactant,mitochondria,
chloroplast, chlorophyll, and stomata
Tuesday
Mitosis, meiosis, cell division, cytokinesis, sexual and asexual reproduction
Procedure: Set/Review:
Monday
Review the processes of osmosis and diffusion
Tuesday-Friday
Review the process of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in preparation for the quiz over this
material on Friday Feb. 3, 2012
Modeling/Guided Practice:
Monday
Teacher will review with students the inquiry activity from Friday. Making sure all students
understand what they are to do. Give students the following scenarios your egg’s mass was 74.5 g
and the circumference was 16cm before it was placed into the 75% solution after it had set
overnight in the 75% solution you took the following calculations egg’s mass 80 g and
circumference 18cm. ASK: which way did the water move in reference to the egg? How do you
know this? Your mission is to decrease the size of the egg explain what type of solution you would
need to make in order for this to happen. *75% solution 125ml of water and 25ml of corn syrup
50% solution 75ml of water and 75ml of corn syrup
Tuesday-Thursday
Teacher will lead students through the exploration of mitosis, meiosis sexual and asexual
reproduction. Students will learn which process is used by all cells and which process is used only
in sex cell to pass along genetic material to the offspring
Independent Practice:
Monday
Students will predict the concentration of their solutions to decrease or increase the size of their
egg
Tuesday
Homework: create a table which will show the reactants and products of photosynthesis
Wednesday
Cut and paste mitosis- students will put diagrams or micrographs of mitosis in the correct order and
explain each phase
Homework
Read chapter 3 section 3 the cell cycle pages 86-89
Thursday
Chapter 3 section 3 quiz
Homework

Friday
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Quiz
Homework
none
Closure/Review:
Monday
Define the process of osmosis and give an example of osmosis using the information gathered from
your inquiry experiment
Tuesday
Students will view a picture and then decide if it depicts osmosis or diffusion and explain their
choice
Wednesday
Write a paragraph explaining osmosis and diffusion include the following terms: cell membrane,
water, high concentration, semi-permeable membrane, and low concentration
Thursday
Write a definition of mitosis explain if this process would be considered asexual or sexual
reproduction
Friday
Write a definition of meiosis explain if this process would be considered asexualor sexual
reproduction
Assessment:
