2. 5 Pillars of Learning
1. Learning is retaining.
2. Learning is individual responsibility.
3. Learning together involves teamwork.
4. Learning is a continuous process.
5. Learning is global understanding.
3. 1
Learning is
retaining
There is a difference between learning as
retaining, and simply programming
yourself to accomplish a task without
such learning.
4. 1
Learning is
retaining
Let’s assume that you read the local
newspaper regularly. If you were asked
about a front-page story from six months
ago, chances are likely that you would be
able to recall the story because you are
the kind of person interested in learning
about your community through the news.
5. 1
Learning is
retaining
On the other hand, if you were asked a
subject-area question regarding a course
that you had taken during the last term,
you would likely have difficulty answering
it.
6. 1
Learning is
retaining
The reason you could not answer the
question so easily is because you may
have used the programming approach.
Your focus was on meeting the course
requirements and completing the
required assignments.
7. 2
Learning is
individual
responsibility
In this digital age of big data, learning is in
our hands. In the old days, there was a
monopoly on knowledge, and professors
were the ones who had the answers to
your questions.
8. 2
Learning is
individual
responsibility
Today, the role of teachers or professors
has changed. I am now a facilitator. I am
here to share knowledge, guide and direct
you in your acquisition of it, and assist
you in achieving the course goals.
9. 2
Learning is
individual
responsibility
In this age, with a click of a mouse, you
can access billions of bits of information
and learn an incredible amount of
information about any given topic. If you
truly are interested in learning, you need
to be self-motivated and find ways to
learn from your professors, classmates,
and outside resources.
10. 3
Learning
together
involves
teamwork
Teamwork means working together,
sharing information, and learning as a
group. Each member of the group has a
responsibility to teach the others. Let’s
assume that a class project has four
sections, you divide these four sections
among the members in order to complete
the project, and then you receive an “A.”
11. 3
Learning
together
involves
teamwork
You may have contributed equally, but the
grade does not reflect your level of
learning. Learning depends on whether
you have taught the other members of
your group about what you have done,
and whether those others have taught
you what they have done in the other
three sections.
12. 3
Learning
together
involves
teamwork
Imagine that after you received your
degree, you started working for a
business or organization, and you were
assigned a task similar to the project that
you had worked on in the class. The
problem now is that you cannot complete
the task because you did not focus on the
value of cross-teaching with the other
team members. What are you going to tell
your employer?
14. 4
Learning is a
continuous
process
I strongly believe that learning is a
continuous process, and I learn every
day though the interactions that I have
both online and in traditional
classrooms. I am facilitating this course
because I am also interested in learning.
15. 4
Learning is a
continuous
process
I have traveled all across the world
delivering lectures and presenting papers,
and every time a question is raised or a
comment is made by one of the
participants in a conference or a learner
in a classroom, it triggers my critical
thinking and raises my level of intellectual
awareness.
16. 4
Learning is a
continuous
process
It is amazing to observe how people think
in different ways and find different
solutions to the same problems. I believe
learning occurs when individuals and
groups are challenged and faced with the
task of brainstorming. You are expected to
be prepared for these sorts of challenges
and participate in brainstorming in this
course.
17. 5
Learning is
global
understanding
We are part of a global market and
economy. If you ignore the global
environment, you will not be able to help
businesses or organizations survive in the
marketplace. If you are a learner in
business, social sciences, engineering, or
any other field, do not ignore the global
dimensions.
18. 5
Learning is
global
understanding
Small, large, domestic, and international
businesses and organizations all have
some measure of global exposure. When
you are learning about a theory, concept,
application, tool, or technique, try to
understand its application in the global
context.
