Professor Joel Hayward joined the National Defense College of the United Arab Emirates in 2017 as a Professor of Strategic Thought. Before joining NDC, he held two academic leadership positions at Khalifa University between November 2012 and December 2016. He was both the Director and Chair of the Institute of International and Civil Security and the Chair of the multidisciplinary Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
As a defense and security studies scholar, he held a number of positions, most prominently: the Dean of the Royal Air Force College, Director of the Royal Air Force Centre for Air Power Studies, and Head of King's College London's Air Power Studies Division.
