This document discusses biblical passages related to heaven, earth, hell, and the afterlife. It argues that heaven is where God dwells, while the righteous will inherit and dwell on the renewed earth. Hell refers to the grave or place of punishment and is not a place of eternal torment. Rather, the final punishment for the wicked is annihilation - being destroyed and ceasing to exist - as reflected in passages about being cast into the lake of fire. The document aims to clarify biblical teachings on these topics.
2. 1Ki 8:27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth?
behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens
cannot contain thee; how much less this house
that I have builded?
Mat 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name.
Joh 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to
heaven, but he that came down from heaven,
even the Son of man which is in heaven.
3. Psa 37:29 The righteous shall inherit the
land, and dwell therein for ever.
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall
inherit the earth.
Rev 5:10 And hast made us unto our God
kings and priests: and we shall reign on the
earth.
4. Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away,
but my words shall not pass away.
Rev 21:1-2 And I saw a new heaven and a
new earth: for the first heaven and the first
earth were passed away; and there was no
more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new
Jerusalem, coming down from God out of
heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her
husband.
5. Rev 21:3-6 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying,
Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will
dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God
himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God
shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be
no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall
there be any more pain: for the former things are passed
away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I
make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these
words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is
done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I
will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the
water of life freely.
6. Hebrew sheol – grave, pit (the abode of the
dead ‘below’ the earth)
Ecc 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do,
do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor
device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the
grave, whither thou goest.
Act 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul
in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One
to see corruption.
7. Greek hades, gehenna
Mar 9:43-44 And if thy hand offend thee, cut
it off: it is better for thee to enter into life
maimed, than having two hands to go into
hell, into the fire that never shall be
quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and
the fire is not quenched.
“Fire” describes the nature of divine
judgment
8. Hebrew Ge-Hinnom – Valley of Hinnom,
Tophet
An actual, physical place at the edge of
ancient Jerusalem
A place of ill repute (idolatry, pagan practices)
Became a place of punishment and disposal
for animal carcases and executed criminals
(continuous fires burned to control the
stench)
9. 2Pe 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that
sinned, but cast them down to hell, and
delivered them into chains of darkness, to be
reserved unto judgment;
Greek – a subterranean cavern, nether-world
into which the wicked were cast
10. Isa 26:14 They are dead, they shall not live; they are
deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou
visited and destroyed them, and made all their
memory to perish.
2Th 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from
the glory of his power;
Psa 37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the
enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they
shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.
The final punishment for the wicked is annihilation!
11. Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with
him the false prophet that wrought miracles
before him, with which he deceived them that
had received the mark of the beast, and them
that worshipped his image. These both were cast
alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was
cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where
the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be
tormented day and night for ever and ever.
12. Ref. Revelation 20:10
Strong’s G165: aiōn, ahee-ohn‘ – properly an
age; by extension perpetuity (also past); by
implication the world; specifically (Jewish) a
Messianic period (present or future): - age,
course, eternal, (for) ever (-more), [n-]ever,
(beginning of the, while the) world (began,
without end). Same as G104 – meaning
continued duration
13. Rev 20:12-14 And I saw the dead, small and great,
stand before God; and the books were opened: and
another book was opened, which is the book of life:
and the dead were judged out of those things which
were written in the books, according to their works.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and
death and hell delivered up the dead which were in
them: and they were judged every man according to
their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake
of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was
not found written in the book of life was cast into the
lake of fire.
14. Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving,
and the abominable, and murderers, and
whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters,
and all liars, shall have their part in the lake
which burneth with fire and brimstone: which
is the second death.
15. Isa 38:18-19 For the grave cannot praise
thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that
go down into the pit cannot hope for thy
truth. The living, the living, he shall praise
thee, as I do this day: the father to the
children shall make known thy truth.
