READERS’ ADVISORY

HOW IT WORKS
• Core group of interested and motivated staff – not just the
responsibility of one staff member
• We use all types of social media tools & try to connect them with
Twitter eg. Blog, YouTube, & retweet what’s interesting & fun in the
world of libraries, reading and the local community
• Following – anything to do with reading & books eg libraries,
authors, publishers, etc
HOW IT WORKS
• Interactive – direct and prompt response with customers,
encourage staff to follow and interact (@authors/publishers)
• Scheduling – we use Hoot suite to schedule tweets when needed
• We have a healthy working relationships with Council’s
Communication and ICT teams
WHAT WE TWEET ABOUT
• Awards/Prizes - long/shortlists & winners
• New arrivals at the library
• Staff picks or Librarians Choice
• Popular loans at the library
• Blog posts
• Photos of staff with books, library book displays, staff having fun with reads,
promotional # eg shelfie day, videos of how to download ebooks, what’s
new etc
• Literature themed programs for any genres and subjects, for any ages
• Reading challenges or puzzles
• Book reviews
• Urgent Library updates (non RA), eg. Power outages

Using Social Media for Readers' Advisory

  5. Jacaranda festival and our purple books ANZAC DAY and our war books Grafton Race week and our racing history books HSC Study events with our HSC collection Book Week Books Christmas books with Christmas

  7. Guess what this is? Book faces? Funny videos
  8. Post 1x a day or every couple of days. Generally first thing in the morning (suits my schedule) #hashtags are important but be selective Googled popular book and reading hashtags and copied the ones I thought best from these lists to use. I always use the same #tags unless there is some additional ones not in the general mix that are worth adding for example: #jacarandafestval #parentingfestival #hsc #hscstudy #bookface #Throwbackthursdays #bookfacefridays #crafty #tech #localhistory #heritage #shelfie  #whattoread Search for suitable instagrammers to follow to start with ie) #nypl #nswpubliclibraries #clarencevalleyculture #myclarencevalley Then follow this up every so often and follow your followers who merit it – library pages that are inspirational Local businesses with great instagrams Local personalities that are exciting… Emphasis should be on the interesting, spectacular or local. Great images with snappy text..if you want or love reading and looking at it then others probably will too. If you follow instagramers and love posts, this will help grow your followers and post lovers  Spend a couple of minutes each week liking posts from those you follow…with a particular focus on local instagrammers…you like them they’ll (hopefully) like you”
