- We created our youth lounge as there was previously no area set aside for young adults within our library and their collections were scattered throughout the library. To create our Youth Lounge we: purchased bright and functional furniture; installed an Xbox 360 gaming station; installed microslat shelving for AV collections; and installed display boards across the top of shelving to allow us to display artwork created by the young people of our Shire. Whilst the space is quite skinny it is light, bright and provides an area that is youth focussed and dedicated, allows us to house all the young adult collections together and provides an area for us to host youth events. We also named the youth pages area of our website the Youth Lounge and with similar colouring and branding we believe it links or physical and virtual resources for young adults. In order to create space we reduced and rehoused our Reference, Local Studies and Adult Non-Fiction collections. We have seen a significant increase in young people utilising the library and its resources since the opening of our youth lounge during Youth Week 2009.
