2. Oxidizing materials supply additional
oxygen to other chemical substrates,
thereby increasing the material’s
flammability.
Because of this, oxidizing materials should
always be stored away from flammable
materials and should always be handled
with additional caution and care.
3. Flammable Material hazard – Chemicals
labeled as flammable have the tendency
to ignite and should be stored
accordingly. Keep the chemicals away
from flames, sparks, and oxidizing
substances.
4. UV Light Hazard
This sign indicates areas where
ultraviolet light is present.
Stay Safe: Exposure to ultraviolet light
can range from ulcerations on the skin to
skin cancer. Appropriate PPE (personal
protective equipment) should be worn
and the area should be avoided, if
possible.
5. The first aid station safety symbol
indicates the availability of a first aid kit.
The kit should be easily accessible to
other lab locations that belong to a
particular group. The first aid kit should
contain the items recommended in the
First Aid Kit Policy and Guidelines for
Laboratories. It should be inspected
monthly to ensure that no items are
missing and that none of the remedies
(e.g., saline solution, ointment) in the kit
have expired.
6. Non-Ionising Radiation
You’ll find this symbol in areas where
non-ionising radiation is present. This
includes the full spectrum of ultraviolet,
visible light, infrared, microwave, radio
frequency and extremely low
frequencies.
All sources of non-ionising radiation
should be clearly marked. Exposure to
non-ionising radiation can be limited
through personal protective equipment,
engineering controls and biological
safety cabinets.
