5. RISE
After selecting Smartphone making as a core business Nokia focused launching
phones & adding some innovations. Like at 1991 they launched phone which used
GSM calls which is better than traditional CDMA. At 1994 they launched 2110 model
adding features Messages, missed calls etc. which hit popularity. At 1996 they
announced Nokia 9000 which is world’s first phone with internet, then launched
Nokia 6110 (gamming device) are some of the innovative exciting models they
launched which was popular that time.
At 1998 Nokia Overpasses Motorola & became biggest mobile phone seller in the
world with market share 22%. But the speed of popularity goes increasing. They
then became most popular mobile phone brand in the world. Then at 2003 they
launched world’s highest selling phone in the history Nokia 1100 which is still on
top. Then the smartphone trend started. Nokia then started making smartphone
with main priority. And some of the phone of Nokia with crazy keypad setup like
Nokia 7600,7280, 3650 etc.
6. after some period they switched to Symbian OS. Which was one of the top OS used
in smartphones. After 2007 Symbian was the main competition to iPhone OS. After
2011 Nokia used Microsoft’s Windows OS with all new tile layout which got
popular. In top 10 highest selling phones in market, there are 5 phones which
comes from Nokia. At 2007-2008 Nokia was on its peak in market share above 50%.
Then the smartphone trend started. Nokia then started making smartphone with
main priority. And some of the phone of Nokia with crazy keypad setup like Nokia
7600,7280, 3650 etc. after some period they switched to Symbian OS. Which was
one of the top OS used in smartphones. After 2007 Symbian was the main

8. FALL
From start of 21st century Nokia launched some crazy/weird phones like Nokia 7600,7280,
3650 etc. at the same time their competitors like Samsung, Motorola launched superb
phones like Motorola launched their Razr series of flip phones which hits popularity. But
still Nokia was on top.
From the start of trend of smartphones Nokia’s competitors like LG, HTC, Samsung,
Motorola & after 2007 the revolution creator Apple launched their good smartphones but
the Nokia lagged behind. The growing market of Android & iOS caused bad time for
Symbian which was leading OS at one time & the app support shifted from Symbian to
android & iOS. These reasons was enough for users to shift to Android or iOS.
“BUT STILL NOKIA WAS ON TOP” due to their brand value made in nearly end of 20th
century.
At 2007-2008 it reaches to its peak market share. But how much & till when it’s brand
value will save them from falling? & at Q1 2009 that thing happened the market share
started falling down sharply & the dark time of Nokia started.
Until Q4 2011 the Nokia market share felt to less than half (23%)
“BUT STILL NOKIA WAS ON TOP”
9. At 2011 Microsoft bought Nokia for $ 7.2 billion & under Nokia branding they launched
Windows OS based phones under Nokia branding & this resulted like their biggest mistake
but still….
“NOKIA WAS ON TOP”
But how much & until when they will remain on top?
Finally that thing happened. Samsung overcomes Nokia at Q1 2013 & Days of Samsung
started until today & Apple like cat running behind mouse.
& after 2014 the new opponents came from china like Xiaomi, Huawei, BBK (Oppo, vivo,
OnePlus) etc. & launched too many good phones in all price segments & this caused a
huge loss for Nokia.
And due to this market share of nokia falls to less than 5% from 51% at 2012. & this remain
constant for couple of years.
Around 2016 the market of android reached 70% & iOS more than 20% where windows 7%.
After all this they launched very few phones for couple of years. & no need to tell that all
was flop. may be it was just formality.

11. COMEBACK
At 2014 Microsoft announced their new CEO Steve Ballmer to “Satya Nadella”. He
publically told that buying of Nokia (at $7.2 billion) was a biggest mistake made by
Microsoft. At 2nd half of 2016 the sold Nokia to HMD Global at just $350 Million.
HMD global is the company formed by Nokia’s former superb employees established
in Finland at 2016. they bought back Nokia from Microsoft & took buying & selling
rights for 10 years from Microsoft.
Then they corrected all their mistakes & made their aggressive strategy. They
partnered Foxconn to manufacture phones. They developed a support of distributor
of 400 & Retailers more than 80000 “in Just 6 months”.
Then they started launching smartphones based on “Android”. & some feature
phones too who gave Nokia their identity.
Their first android phone was Nokia 1 launched at June 2017 based on android
Oreo Go edition coming under AndroidOne programme.
Then they launched their further phones like Nokia 3,5,6 etc. with great specs &
focussing on price bracket of 9000-15000.
12. At first half of 2017 Nokia’s market share felt below 1% & they were at 34th position
in India (from 1). But after comeback the market share at 2nd half they sold 21
million phones in just 5 months. & the position 34th to 8th.
Then they introduced their old flagship feature phones like 3315, Banana phone
which was super popular at one time in the new version.
Then they introduced new series called Nokia 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1 etc. which was
successor of their last year Nokia 1,2,3,5,6 etc. & then their plus model like 3.1 plus,
5.1 plus, 6.1 plus. Which became popular due to their exciting offering with
aggressive pricing.
Due to these all things they re-established their brand value. Peoples also started
buying their phones & Nokia again got popular.
Due to their offering of AndroidOne they became biggest Android version update
provider in 2019. their 96% phones updated to android 9.
They launched Nokia 9 Pureview which is world’s 1st Penta lens camera.
Now they launched billion of devices in just 3 years. Now we can say that their
future is very bright.
