The Present Tenses 
There are two present tenses in English: 
 The present continuous: I am working. 
 The simple present: I work.

Form of Present Continuous 
The present continuous tense is formed with the present 
tense of the auxiliary verb be + the present participle: 
Affirmative Negative Interrogative

we are working we are not working are we working?

Negative interrogative: am I not working? are you not working? is he not working? etc.

The Present Continuous Tense is used for 
1. Actions which are happening at or 
around the moment of speaking. 
• Now I’m doing the washing up. 
• She is working very hard nowadays. 
• It is raining. 
• I’m tired. I’m going to bed now. 
Goodnight! 
2. Temporary situations. 
• I’m staying with a friend at the moment.
Uses of the present continuous tense 
 For an action happening about this time but not 
necessarily at the moment of speaking: 
 I’m reading an interesting book at the moment. I’ll land 
it to you when I’ve finished it. (I’m not reading the book 
at the time of speaking. I mean that I have started it 
but not finished yet. I’m in the middle of reading it) 
 He is teaching French and learning Italian. (He may 
not be doing either at the moment of speaking.) 
 Cathrine wants to work in Italy, so she is learning 
Italian. (but parhaps she isn’t learning Italian exactly at 
the time of speaking)
ACTIONS THAT ARE HAPPENING AT PRESENT (1) 
They are dancing right now.
TEMPORARY SITUATIONS (2) 
They normally play tennis. 
But this week they are skating.
Uses of the present continuous tense 
 When we talk about things happening in a period around 
now (for example, today/this week/this evening etc) 
 ‘You’re working hard today’. ‘Yes, I have a lot to do’ 
(not ‘You work hard today’) 
 ‘Is Susan working this week?’. ‘No. She’s on holiday.’ 
 We use the present continuous tense when we talk 
about changes happening around now (Changing or 
developing situations) 
 The population of the word is rising. (not ‘rises’) 
 Is your English getting better?. (not ‘does your English get 
better’.) 
 It’s getting colder.
The Present Continuous Tense is used for 
 Fixed arrangements in the near future. 
 They are getting married next week. 
 With a point in time to indicate an action 
which begins before this point and 
probably continues after it: 
 At six I am bathing the baby. (I start bathing 
him before six.)
CHANGING SITUATIONS (3) 
Yesterday it was very sunny. 
Today it’s raining more and more.
FUTURE ARRANGEMENTS (4) 
They are celebrating a party next weekend.
THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE 
TIME EXPRESSIONS: 
 Now, 
 at the moment, 
 today, 
 nowdays, 
 this week. 
They are throwing snowballs 
now
Exercise - 01 
Put the verbs in brackets into the present continuous tense.

3rd person singular - spelling 
1. In general, the third person singular is formed by adding an s to 
the base verb. 
work He works 
2. Verbs ending in ss,x,ch,sh,o add “es” to the third person 
singular. 
dress She dresses 
fix He fixes 
watch She watches T.V. 
wash She washes 
go It goes ! 
3. Verbs ending in consonant + y, changes the y to i and add “es” 
Consonant + y  i + es: cry – cries, fly – flies, terrify - terrifies
What’s the 3rd person singular?

In the affirmative the simple present has the same form as 
the infinitive but adds an s for the third person singular.
The Present Simple Tense is used to describe: 
1. Facts which are always true – general truths, 
e.g. facts in science and geographical 
descriptions. 
Water freezes at 0 degrees. 0º
The Present Simple Tense is used to describe: 
2. Actions that happen regularly (Habitual 
actions). A frequency adverb is often 
used. 
They usually take a walk with 
their son
The Present Simple Tense is used to describe: 
3. Opinions, likes and feelings. 
She likes making snowmen
THE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE 
TIME EXPRESSIONS: 
FREQUENCY ADVERBS: 
always, often, generally, usually, normally, sometimes, never. 
He normally cooks pasta 
OTHER TIME EXPRESSIONS: 
every day, every month, every year, on sundays, at the weekends etc. 
Musicians sometimes work on sundays
Study this situation 
 Alex is driver, but now he in in bed asleep. So: 
 He is not driving a bus. (he is sleeping) 
 But, He drives a bus. (He is a bus driver)
 The simple present used to express habitual action 
 We use the present simple to talk about things in 
general

Put the verb into the correct form.sometimes you need the 
negative.

come back. 
3. I want to lose weight, so this week I ...... (eat) lunch

German.

(speak) to each other.

8. Ann (make) a dress for herself at the moment. She (make) all her 
own clothes. 
9. I'm afraid I've broken one of your coffee cups. — 
Don't worry. I (not like) that set anyway.

  • 4. The Present Tenses There are two present tenses in English:  The present continuous: I am working.  The simple present: I work.
  • 5. THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE play At the moment I’m playing football.

Form of Present Continuous The present continuous tense is formed with the present tense of the auxiliary verb be + the present participle: Affirmative Negative Interrogative I am working I am not working am I working? you are working you are ml working are you working? he/she/it is working he/she/it is not working is he/she/it working? we are working we are not working are we working? you are working you are not working are you working? they are working they are not working are they working?   • 15. The Present Continuous Tense is used for 1. Actions which are happening at or around the moment of speaking. • Now I’m doing the washing up. • She is working very hard nowadays. • It is raining. • I’m tired. I’m going to bed now. Goodnight! 2. Temporary situations. • I’m staying with a friend at the moment.
  • 16. Uses of the present continuous tense  For an action happening about this time but not necessarily at the moment of speaking:  I’m reading an interesting book at the moment. I’ll land it to you when I’ve finished it. (I’m not reading the book at the time of speaking. I mean that I have started it but not finished yet. I’m in the middle of reading it)  He is teaching French and learning Italian. (He may not be doing either at the moment of speaking.)  Cathrine wants to work in Italy, so she is learning Italian. (but parhaps she isn’t learning Italian exactly at the time of speaking)
  • 17. ACTIONS THAT ARE HAPPENING AT PRESENT (1) They are dancing right now.
  • 18. TEMPORARY SITUATIONS (2) They normally play tennis. But this week they are skating.
  • 19. Uses of the present continuous tense  When we talk about things happening in a period around now (for example, today/this week/this evening etc)  ‘You’re working hard today’. ‘Yes, I have a lot to do’ (not ‘You work hard today’)  ‘Is Susan working this week?’. ‘No. She’s on holiday.’  We use the present continuous tense when we talk about changes happening around now (Changing or developing situations)  The population of the word is rising. (not ‘rises’)  Is your English getting better?. (not ‘does your English get better’.)  It’s getting colder.
  • 20. The Present Continuous Tense is used for  Fixed arrangements in the near future.  They are getting married next week.  With a point in time to indicate an action which begins before this point and probably continues after it:  At six I am bathing the baby. (I start bathing him before six.)
  • 21. CHANGING SITUATIONS (3) Yesterday it was very sunny. Today it’s raining more and more.
  • 22. FUTURE ARRANGEMENTS (4) They are celebrating a party next weekend.
  • 23. THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE TIME EXPRESSIONS:  Now,  at the moment,  today,  nowdays,  this week. They are throwing snowballs now

  • 28. 3rd person singular - spelling 1. In general, the third person singular is formed by adding an s to the base verb. work He works 2. Verbs ending in ss,x,ch,sh,o add “es” to the third person singular. dress She dresses fix He fixes watch She watches T.V. wash She washes go It goes ! 3. Verbs ending in consonant + y, changes the y to i and add “es” Consonant + y  i + es: cry – cries, fly – flies, terrify - terrifies
