Lysteriosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes that can affect multiple animal species. It is characterized by meningoencephalitis and loss of muscle coordination that can cause paralysis. Clinical signs depend on whether the infection presents as encephalitic or septicemic. The encephalitic form causes neurological signs like depression and impaired swallowing. The septicemic form causes diarrhea, abortion and blindness. Treatment involves antibiotics like penicillin and supportive care, while prevention focuses on sanitation and avoiding contaminated feed.
3. DEFINITION:
• It is a bacterial zoonotic disease which is characterized by
• Meningoencephalitis
• Loss of muscular coordination
• Paralysis
• Fever
• Abortion
• Septicemia
6. PATHOGENESIS:
• Pathogen enter then penetrate through mucosa and enter into brain and cause its
inflammation. Due to meningoencephalitis the co-ordination of the muscles become
weak and flaccid paralysis occurs. Other form of pathogenesis is when pathogen
enter into blood stream then multiplication occurs and circulate in the body and
cause infection of different systems as reproductive system, ocular system and
enteric system to cause the Abortion, blindness and diarrhea respectively.
8. ENCEPHALITIC FORM:
• In the encephalitic form there are certain signs and symptoms;
Depression
Loss of appetite
Loss of milk production
Neuro-muscular in-coordination (which lead to circling movement)
Seizures
Facial nerve paralysis
Lock jaw (which lead to impaired swallowing)
9. SEPTICEMIC FORM:
• In the septicemic form there are certain signs and symptoms;
Diarrhea
Abortion
Blindness
Death
*(this form is mostly occur in monogastric animals)
12. TREATMENT:
• Penicillin and tetracycline (orally)
@ 25mg/KG of bodyweight for 1 week
• Na-Penicillin (If brain involve)
@ 40,000IU/KG I.V. repeat after every 6 hrs.
• Dexamethasone
@ 1-2mg/KG of B.W. I.V.
• Supportive therapy
• Electrolytes and fluid therapy
13. PREVENTION AND CONTROL:
• Soiled silage and hay should not be used.
• Improve sanitation measures.
• Keep away the birds from housing area of farm.
• For the prevention of listeriosis in the human, pasteurized milk should be used.
