Title of Lesson:
Visual Arts and the Human Form
All cultures have means of portraying the human form for expression of cultural, social,
religious, political, and aesthetic values. In this lesson students are invited to artfully
connect, communicate, respond, experiment, and discover new ways to engage in this
ancient but very human impulse to represent self and culture.
Students will create 2D (gesture drawings) to render the form, working from a model
and from their imagination to bring content and personal imagery into their work.
Learning objectives: By the end of the lesson students will:
o Reflect on the human form (self, other and through history).
o Know that gesture sketching is used for active thinking -- Most artists plan
their artworks in a gesture sketching style.
o Become familiar with the terminology utilized in gesture drawing and working
from the figure, ink wash renderings and modeling.
o Learn techniques of gesture drawing utilizing a model.
o Learn methods of charcoal and black felt pen.
o Learn methods of ink wash renderings.
o Engage in class critiques.
o Develop vocabulary and verbal English skills.

o Continuous white paper
o Charcoal
o Students' sketchbooks (A3)
o Soft pencils
o Black felt pens
o A2/A1 sheets of paper
o Black ink and paintbrushes
o Jar for water

Lesson Plan, designed by Rosa María Fernández Alba LESSON PLAN Name of teacher: ROSA MARÍA FERNÁNDEZ ALBA No. in class: 18 Grade: 4th ESO Lesson time: 5 sessions Title of Lesson: Visual Arts and the Human Form All cultures have means of portraying the human form for expression of cultural, social, religious, political, and aesthetic values. In this lesson students are invited to artfully connect, communicate, respond, experiment, and discover new ways to engage in this ancient but very human impulse to represent self and culture. Students will create 2D (gesture drawings) to render the form, working from a model and from their imagination to bring content and personal imagery into their work. Learning objectives: By the end of the lesson students will: o Reflect on the human form (self, other and through history). o Know that gesture sketching is used for active thinking -- Most artists plan their artworks in a gesture sketching style. o Become familiar with the terminology utilized in gesture drawing and working from the figure, ink wash renderings and modeling. o Learn techniques of gesture drawing utilizing a model. o Learn methods of charcoal and black felt pen. o Learn methods of ink wash renderings. o Engage in class critiques. o Develop vocabulary and verbal English skills.

Stages of the lesson 'Visual Arts and the Human Form' Stages of the lesson (+ timing) Teaching procedures and teacher’s language: Learner activities and learner language: Interaction Support given Session 1 Warm-up exercise: Human chain 1. 2 mins. Students watch the video: 'Shapes formed by Human bodies', Pilobolus Dance. Students watch Whole class Digital whiteboard and youtube video (<2'): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHEM0dxxEzM 2. 15 mins. Presentation of the activity and the related vocabulary. Demonstration of techniques, methods and objectives. -CHARCOAL. Teacher (T) explains the activity: Students have to trace around his classmates' silhouettes (using charcoal) in different positions on the walls. Teacher reminds them of infinitive structure to give instructions (and negative infinitive). Students listen Language Assistant (LA) writes new vocabulary and infinitive structure on the board Speaking - single words Students write down new vocabulary and structures in their notebooks Whole class Whole class LA - Whole class Individual - Flash cards to describe different human positions. - New vocabulary on the board. - Students' notebooks. 3. 30 mins. Engagement in Creative Activity 1. Students in pairs trace around their profiles each other using charcoal. Speaking - student gives instructions Pairs T-pair LA-pair - Corridors with continuous white paper on the walls. 4. 8 mins. Questions, critique/sharing Teacher gives the students the opportunity to take a look to all the silhouettes, to notice the variety and encourages them to talk about the activity.   • 5. Session 2 2D gesture drawings 1. 8 mins. Students are given a hand-out to fill the gaps guessing the answers from a given list. Students offer answers and one of them writes. Reading, speaking, negotiating. Groups of 3. Hand-out 1 -video 'Sketching a Gesture Drawing'. 2. 10 mins. Students watch the video: 'Sketching a Gesture Drawing', Expert Village Students check their hand-out answers. Students listen Students read and correct their mistakes Whole class Groups of 3. Digital whiteboard and youtube video (<3'): http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=tStMdJ11JSs&feature=share&list=PL1E761116D3FA 8F83 (twice, if necessary) 3. 10 mins. Presentation of the activity 2 and the related vocabulary. Demonstration of techniques, methods and objectives. -SOFT PENCILS - Teacher explains the activity: Students have to create quick sketches (with soft pencils) of the model given on the tables. Students listen LA writes new vocabulary on the board Speaking - single words Students write down new vocabulary in their notebooks Whole class Whole class Whole class Individual - Wooden human figure artist's model to display human positions. - New vocabulary on the board. - Students' notebooks. 4. 20 mins. Engagement in Creative Activity 2. Students in groups of 6 sit around 3 tables to make the sketches (timed gesture drawings). Students will have to complete a two minutes gesture drawings for 5/6 different positions. Listening T and LA advises while working. Groups of 6 T-group LA-group - 3 wooden human figure artist's model to display human positions. - Students' sketchbooks (A3). 5. 7 mins. Questions, critique/sharing Teacher gives the students the opportunity to take a look to all the sketches and encourages them to talk about the activity. Demonstration of techniques, methods and objectives. -BLACK FELT PEN- Language Assistant introduces adjectives of description, pronouns and new vocabulary. Teacher explains the activity: Students have to create quick sketches (with black felt pen) of live model. Students listen Students listen and participate when they are asked to Speaking - single words Students write down new vocabulary in their notebooks Whole class Whole class Students offer answers Whole class Individual - LA to be the teacher's model. - PowerPoint interactive presentation. It includes semaphore activities. - Students' notebooks. 7. 25 mins. Engagement in Creative Activity 3. Students, in easels, around a live model to make timed gesture drawings. Students will have to complete a one, two, and three minutes gesture drawings for 5/6 different positions using black felt pens. Listening T and LA tips while working. Individual T-student LA-student - A volunteer student to be the artists' model. - Some blankets and cushions for the live model - 20 easels - A2/A1 sheets of paper
