computer with an Internet connection is a really nice feature, and well worth the extra cash.”

15. BodyMedia FIT Core and Link armbands
Creator: BodyMedia, Inc.

- When you sweat, your skin becomes more electrically conductive. This measurement helps the device

into the environment.

they have burned and track calories consumed. Depending on the version they own, users can view this
information directly on the wristband display, and or on apps on their iPhone or Android devices.
- Monthly subscription required.
Target Audience:
People who want/need to monitor their exercise regime, people who want to stay healthy/lose weight via exercise.

workouts, create long-term goals, and analyze performance.
- Users can also answer phone calls and read text messages on the device through Bluetooth-enabled
technology.
Target Audience:
Young, busy professionals
Reviews:
“This device was a pleasant surprise to me. I’m by no means a healthy person, definitely someone who
could benefit from a regular run outside in the summer or inside the mall in the winter, and what do you
know, this device has me wanting to do it. In that I’ve not been a regular exerciser for at least the past
few years now, the motivation I feel to get busy is a testament to how well the device does its job.”

stakes through “commitment contracts” to achieve
them.
- Prompts users to invite friends to referee and support
them through the process of achieving their goals.
Target Audience:
People who need extra motivation to get to their goals.
Reviews:
“StickK actually works. I’m doing it! Getting regular
exercise, that is. It’s a shame I had to ‘put a contract out’
on myself, but what can I say, exercise has never been
my favourite thing to do. I’ve been a procrastinator, but
not anymore!”
Why It Works:
Addresses the problem of not being motivated enough to
achieve your health goals head on by getting users to
place a bet on themselves. Although initially unwilling,
users swear by its effectiveness. Users have the option of
allocating their money to charity, further promoting
incentive.
rtcrm proprietary and confidential 19

‘ordinary’ patients (not with a chronic disease) will share
online, but kudos to patientslikeme.com for making their
services widely available.”

medical reference app company.
• Health eVillages has already run pilot programs in Haiti, Kenya, Uganda and the
Greater Gulf Coast. It will be rolling out in earnest in fall 2011. It estimates that there
are more than 1 billion people worldwide living in under-served areas and nearly one-

organizations to further health care in
developing countries.

take too much, and alert doctors if
patients are not taking their meds.

programs that use SMS messaging.
• Each program starts with an announcement SMS message that encourages mobile
phone users to participate in a free-of-charge questionnaire. Mobile phone users are
told that they would win prizes as an incentive.
• Participants are then sent multiple-choice quiz questions in the form of SMS
messages. If participants answer a question correctly, they will receive additional
information about the topic. If their answer is wrong, they will receive the correct
answer with an explanation.
• During the program, Text to Change encourages people to visit partner HIV test
centers and clinics.
• Text to Change ran a pilot in Mbarara, Uganda, to test this initiative in February 2008.
From February 14, 2008, until April 8, 2008, there were 15,000 Celtel (now ZAIN)
mobile phone users targeted in the Greater Mbarara region. During this time 2,610

29. Dii: Digital Integration & Innovation
The RTCRM Digital Integration and Innovation team is
tasked with keeping track and making sense of the
ever-changing digital world. It’s our job to understand the nuances of how and why
different types of people use technology and what that tells us about them.
More importantly, it’s our job to help our clients apply this knowledge to better
communicate with their customers. We help clients translate business goals into
marketing campaigns that build relationships with customers. In the 21st century,
understanding how and why someone uses technology is as important as
understanding where they live, what gender they are, and how old they are. That’s
where we come in. From ensuring that technological behavior is considered in the
research phase, to tactical plans that align digital, print and broadcast tactics, we
work with clients and internal partners to make sure it all works.
