4. Achievements on ICS Sector
1. More than 702223 HH- ICS, MICS and IICS so
far promoted with support from government of
Nepal and other organizations in the country to
save fuel wood, particularly to improve indoor
air pollution and rural health.
2. With support from Nepal GoN, and other
organizations CRT/N alone has promoted about
2,55,000 improved cook stoves of various types
(mud and metallic) in more than 36 districts
particularly in mid hill and few in plain area of
Nepal .
Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal (CRT/N)
5. 17000 ICS of various types promoted by the year 2000
209,615 fixed mud and metallic made ICS were installed under BESP (as
of Dec, 2012 )
14373 fixed mud made ICS installed under Terai ICS carbon project (with
ceramic combustion Chamber) as of Dec,2012
2100 fixed mud made ICS installed under LFP (with ceramic combustion
Chamber)
1701 fixed mud made ICS installed under Chitwan Carbon project (with
ceramic combustion Chamber)
2006 Rocket stoves installed under ICF supported by SNV in FWDR(with
metallic combustion Chamber)
2043 ICS installed under Renewable Energy for far west under REFFEL
( fixed mud type ICS with grate) as of Dec,2012.

Metal-Mud Rocket Stove-one pot hole
Rocket Stove two pot hole with chimney
fixed type hybrid rocket stoves
with single and double pothole
made from mud bricks with
metallic combustion chamber.
efficiency of these stoves are in
the range 34-36 % under lab test
fuel saving up to 60% (under lab
test)
emit less of the harmful smoke
Metallic combustion chamber

programme has been modifeied for
efficiency, durability as well as emissions
13. Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
Ensuring Quality of StovesEnsuring Quality of Stoves
Users/promoters/LPOs/ are trained for manufacturing, taking
care of quality control and they are the ones who would be
trouble shooting in need
Technological development leading to modification of stoves
involves the periodic surveys, periodic observation and
replication of the learning for a better model
Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal (CRT/N)
14. Partnership for Clean Indoor Air
ChallengesChallenges
When developing the stove models
manufacture/disseminated the challenges considered are
Cost of the stove
user behavior
socio-economic considerations
geographical location
and the efficiency of the stoves
Testing has helped address these challenges considerably –
For the RS Model (promoted through ICF) The testing
and retesting using LEMS has helped gain the
durably/efficiency of the stoves
Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal (CRT/N)
15. Users’ education is crucial for creating demand and sustainable use
of ICS.
Suitable ICS models are required for creating larger demand at
rural community level.
More support and efforts are required to serve people in remote
areas of the country.
Continuous follow up and monitoring is vital.
ICS promotion activities coupled with fuel wood/kitchen
management and household sanitation would add the value and
increases demand.

16. Conclusions and Next StepConclusions and Next Step
Contribute towards achieving Govt’s targets on rural and renewable energy
under the new national framework called National Rural &Renewable Energy
Programme (NRREP), initiated by Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC)
from mid 2012 for 5 years.
Develop CRT/N as Centre for Excellency on Biomass Technology.
• Promote more CDM projects, emphasize on global issues such as climate change
and sustainable development
• Establish RTKC as:
regional hub for information sharing with regional and global ICS partners/ development
agencies
Recognised research and development centre with Stoves Testing Facility
