A good manager is always a good leader, but a
good leader isn’t at the same time a good manager.
In general, a good leader will adjust his or her
style based on each individual on their team. A leader
should support the people in confrontation with new
challenges, in changing perspectives and learning new
rules.
At the base of leadership is teamwork.
The most difficult load of a leader is
the mobilisation people to adapt at new rules, at new
work conditions. Services market is in a constant
change, there are new trends and challenges.
• Who’s the better leader: men or
women?
This question can have two answers:
women or men. Both women and men can
be good leaders, even if they choose a
different way for achieve the same
objective.
Leadership abilities:
♦confident
♦honest
♦smart, intelligent
♦responsible
♦hardworking
♦ambitious
Responsibility and ambition ore two
important qualities. Notably, men prevail over
women on decisiveness, with 44% respondents
saying that men are more decisive and 33% saying
women are.
Women tend to experience heightened
pressure to perform well, both when they are
members of a male-dominated work group and
when they are tasked with leading such a group.
(McDonald, 2004)
Americans believe women have the right stuff
to be political leaders. When it comes to honesty,
intelligence and a handful of other character traits
they value highly in leaders. Many adults say women
are more honest than men, while just one-in-five say
men are more honest.
Coleman (2003), Bemn (1974) and Gray (1993)
- “women are thought to be caring, tolerant,
emotional, intuitive, gentle and predispsed towards
collaboration, empowerment and teamwork’’, where
“men are supposed to be aggressive, assertive,
analytical, decisive and more inclined to act
independently”.
What is that difference in leading male vs
female subordinates?
►78% of the respondents felt there was a difference
in leading male subordinates.
Men, in general, tend to prefer a direct
approach. They understand the levels in an
organisation.
Women tend to approach things as a team, and
delegating to them has to be softer.
The people who take part at study Deloitte say
that women are more consistent, are able to perform
several activities simultaneously. Also, they have the
ability to communicate better than men.
Women ‘take care’, men ‘take charge’.
Men looking for way to win, while women just
want to improve. Men are more confident and make
decisions easier.
However, the study Deloitte shows that are clear
differences between women and men, differences
reported to their specific qualities on the function of
leadership.
For example, Norvegia was the first country in
Europe that imposed equality between women and
men in business. At the beginning was confront with
“golden skirt effect”, when the numer of women who
working as manager was small compared to number of
