A Brief History
When the business was born under the name of WH Hilton back in 1908, the world of filing
was new and exciting. In Rochdale, near Manchester, a young Frank Wilson used the expertise
of the local spindle manufacturers to make components for binders, which he assembled at
home. Demand was great for his products and the business grew, with new products being
continuously developed.
As larger filing systems became more commonplace, the need for improved filing practices
increased. And it is this focus on designing efficient filing systems that has been the foundation
of Railex’s work over the last century. A number of the products, including the Railex Polifile,
Easifile and 221 lateral suspension pocket became standards throughout the offices of the UK.
In addition, Railex worked with its customers to design literally millions of customised files that
have met specific needs across thousands of organisations.
This dedication to detail, coupled with a culture of high quality and exceptional
customer service opened the door to overseas markets. The launch of large
format files for storing print plates and other graphic arts based media led to
the development of a strong German market. At the same time in Norway,
Railex’s medical record folders became a great success in the hospital market.
During the last century, as the world changed, Railex changed while maintaining
the principles behind our success. So as we look forward, we will continue to

Specification Service
Many customers know what they are trying to achieve with their filing system
but need advice on the best methods and products. This is the specialism
of Railex, in that we have the expertise in records management to ask the
right questions and then the experience to guide the customer through the
specification process. Where a standard product is not appropriate we can
either customize an existing design, or create a new design which is perfect
for the situation.
Materials
Material choice is a crucial element of the design. Along with the grade,
colour and properties of the board, consideration must be given to the future
consistency of supply. Railex have a long-term strategy of using reputable
paper mills and holding ranges of boards in stock, often in different weights
and colours. In addition alternative materials such as fibreboard and
polypropylene are held to give the widest choice.
The same is true of file fittings, where we have a myriad of different fittings
in stock to suit any situation.
Where the material or fitting required is not available from stock, our
experienced Purchasing department has an international network of
dependable suppliers on which to draw.

5. The Filing Specialists
Configurations and Sizes
Our Production department has a range of guillotines and die-cutting machines
to make the most complex shapes you can imagine. We have both automatic
and manual machines, giving short-run capabilities and single piece sizes up
to 79cm x 100cm.
Print
The most popular customisation is bespoke print. We have full graphic design
and plate-making facilities on site for our flexo-graphic print presses. This
means that we can make preproduction samples that allow the customer to
approve the final print before manufacture. This removes the risk of error
as the approved artwork is sent directly to the plate making facility. In most
cases our customers require black print, however we can facilitate 4-colour
work and specialist effects such as embossing through our supply base.
Automatic and Manual Pocket Gluing
Our gluing department boasts four fast automatic pocket gluing machines,
which between them offer a range of pocket types and sizes secured with either
hot-melt or cold glue. Where complex shapes or short runs are required, we
have a long-established manual gluing system that is experienced in gluing
cloth and large format sizes.
Hi-frequency Polypropylene Welding
Hemming suspension bars into polypropylene is a particular challenge and for
that we have the latest in ultra-sonic welding equipment. It is more attractive
than traditional riveting and wire-stitching, but still provides a strong physical
bond.
Tabbed Dividers
We have short and long run capability on dividers, both printed and unprinted,
in a range of sizes up to A3 and beyond.
Features and Fittings
As you would expect we have a vast range of print finishing equipment
including eyeletting machines, tab punches, presses, wire stitching machines,
rotary and automatic creasing machines, and punches. This gives us the
flexibility to meet the most demanding specifications.

8. 221 Lateral
Railex 221 range is the ultimate in compact lateral filing. The 221A and 221P link at the base, creating
a chain-like series of pockets in which to place your folders. These files only need one suspension bar
per pocket, and so give very high density filing for slim contents. For bulkier contents the 221B and
221C are manufactured from Presspahn, and with reinforced bases will take the heaviest contents with
ease. All pockets utilise the Click-Tab for indexing, giving a fully encapsulated tab system that can be
reused over and over again

Simpafile Drawer Suspension files are amongst the best manilla drawer files available. Manufactured
from a strong 350 gsm pressboard and incorporating heavy gauge solid steel bars, they will stand up to
the heaviest of jobs. Uniquely, the 50mm capacity Simplafile Wallet has an all round gusset to prevent
papers falling out of the sides. This allows the file to be used as a desk file, eliminating the need for
inner files for loose papers. Both products have 11 pre-printed alpha/numeric tab positions to make

Easifiles are unique to Railex and are intended to provide the perfect punched paper file. The strong
plastic prongs create a smooth arch that allows the contents to be read easily. Even when full the file lies

Railex Polifile is a popular improvement on Spring Transfer Files. Every area of the standard spring
file has been improved. The springs are replaced with Hytrel plastic fittings that are smoother and

SpringArch is Railex’s version of the popular spring transfer file. Punched paper is placed on to
springs which, when formed into an arch, make it possible to turn the papers while they remain firmly
in place. Papers can be added and removed without fuss and a burr-free compressor holds everything
securely when the file is shut. Standard is foolscap size with an optional large capacity pocket on the

from Marbleboard which contains an anti-microbial agent as standard. Once opened the file can

The storage of medical records provides a particular challenge to surgeries in the UK. Railex
manufacture a range of trays that are perfect for filing Lloyd George Wallets onto shelves or racking.
The MT/57 is our premium product. Manufactured from a glazed fibreboard, it has a professional
finish yet is designed to deal with constant access. The card frame on the front of the tray allows
clear, replaceable indexing, and the riveted pull handle allows easy retrieval of the tray from the shelf.
The AT/57 is designed for archive areas where aesthetics are not as important. Manufactured from
corrugated card, it provides an economic answer to the problem of how to hold records in storage whilst
allowing easy access.

Hook-On Studio is a cost effective, full filing
system for the office or studio. The system is
based around Railex Hook-On, which allows files
to simply hook on to the storage rack.

StudioRack is designed to be the complete solution for your Hook-On files. Manufactured from
strong, sturdy steel extrusions, it can support weights up to 1000kg. Each rack has a strong, melamine

The Railex Hook-on system is an innovative way of improving filing efficiency. For quick and easy
retrieval of files and clear indexing, lateral suspension filing is the best. Railex Hook-on delivers these
benefits without the need for suspension pockets. Each has two strong metal hooks that attach to the
rail. This means that the file is both the inner file and the suspension pocket in one. Available in pocket

28. Social Care Access System
Railex Access Filing was designed to meet the demands of Social Services departments
throughout England and Wales. The requirements of the Freedom of Information and
Data Protection acts make it critical that information is held securely and yet is easily
segmented and made accessible.
The outer covers:
• Are available in three configurations to cover any mix of modules
and situation
• Are available in two tough materials, both tear and scuff
resistant to give long service in heavy usage and extra-heavy
usage environments.
• The AP5 contains an Anti-Micorbial agent, to prevent the spread
of germs.
The inner modules:
• Can be added and removed with ease. This allows whole
sections to be kept private or archived without the need to
disrupt the other documents.
• Can be read immediately like a book. The individual modules
can contain Railex’s Easifile prong fitting which means that the
file can be opened anywhere and read or photocopied without
touching the fittings.
• Can hold loose papers or plans. Pocket modules are available
for papers that cannot be punched.
• Are tabbed in three positions and can be indexed in exactly the
same way as dividers

29. Access System
Covers
The Access System Polifile provides the cover around the individual modules that make up the
project, case or customer - for example. Three levels are offered, the colourful 348gsm standard being
the most popular. Where extra-strength or colour-coded indexing is required the AP5-MC should be
considered. This is manufactured from our highest specification 575gsm pressboard and incorporates a
front End Tab for simple shelf indexing.
The AP5-MC has an additional fitting on the inside cover to take an index sheet or form, which is perfect
for private data that must not appear on the front cover.
The AP5-HC is designed for extreme cases where a file thickness of greater than 50mm is required. It
has full fittings on both pages of the inside cover and can hold 16 inner modules with ease.

Modules
Access System Modules make up the inner segments of an Access system and are manufactured
from light grade manilla. The Easifile module incorporates the Easifile prong mechanism for punched
paper. This allows easy reading and the removal of single sheets from any module without disrupting
the papers and without adding bulk to the overall file. The pocket module is perfect for loose papers,
as it keeps them secure whilst being easily removable. All modules can be easily added, removed and
restored with a minimum of fuss.

For example, storing artwork in drawers can be
problematic, as the prints are difficult to retrieve and
can be damaged. Railex’s Large Format systems
suspend the papers or plates vertically inside an
outer file, so making storage and retrieval much
more efficient.
The system consists of two parts, firstly the storage
- usually a steel rack containing hanging rails - and
secondly the files that hold the media. The files are
available in four different specifications to protect
many types of media, each with their own features
and benefits.

32. QuickRack
The QuickRack shelving system is made from strong steel extrusion and can be assembled quickly
on site without the need for additional fastenings. The racks are available in a range of heights and
depths to deal with the various sizes of media that need to be stored. In all cases the racks are supplied
complete with the hanging rails necessary to hold the files.

33. Trolleys
When storing media for print machinery, such as print plates for example, it is more efficient to store
the live work near to where they are needed. Mobile Trolleys and Wall Mounted Rails provide a very
effective solution in achieving this. There are two types of trolley available.
MiniRack is a scaled down version of the QuickRack, with heavy duty castors fitted for mobility. It has
a melamine work-surface built into the top to allow the file to be opened quickly.
RollaTrolley is constructed from box section steel and includes a clear Perspex work-surface built into
the top.
In addition, Wall Mounted Rails which can be secured to a nearby wall and provide a very cost effective
way of presenting the work to the machine.
