Milestones in history of computers
Generations of computer
3. Introduction
• In earlier time computers were only used by
scientist and engineers for complex
calculations.
• Now a days computers become the basic need
of everyday life.
• It is used at almost every place like; bank,
hospitals, media and entertainment, school,
colleges, homes, space technology, research
and many more places.
5. Definition
• Computer is derived from a word means to
“compute” which means to calculate.
• Now a days computer is not a device used for
calculations. Other than that there are much
applications handled by computer and used by
user.
• The present day computer is entirely different
from the earlier devices that were invented for
doing calculations.
6. History of computers
• The need to keep a track of numbers led to the
invention of different counting devices.
• Right from abacus the first counting device;
many devices were invented, leading to the
development of computers.
8. 1. 3000BC Abacus
• First mechanical device developed in china
• Made from wooden frame and rods with beads
• Divided into 2 parts- heaven (2 beads) and earth (5 beads)
• Used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
• Can be used like calculator by a skilled person
9. Pascal Adding Machine
• French mathematician (age 19 years) invented
mechanical calculator in 1642
• Used gears, wheels and dials
• Numbers were displayed by rotating wheels
• Used for addition and subtraction
• Ex- Taxi meter
10. Leibniz Calculator
• Pascal was famous German mathematician developed
mechanical device in 1671
• Perform addition and subtraction
• Also perform calculations of multiplication, division
and find square roots
11. Charles Babbage
• Was a British mathematician (father of computers)
• Invented working model of mechanical computer
called difference engine in 1822
• Invented analytical engine in 1833
• Has five units – input, output, store, mill and control
• Worked like the modern computer
• Store –storing data, mill- calculation and control-
supervising units
14. Augusta Ada Lovelace
• Was an English mathematician.
• She was famous as a writer for writing her
work on Charles Babbage’s analyrical engine.
• First programmer who suggested Binary data
storage (0 and 1) instead of decimal number
system
15. George Boole
• Solved mathematical problems by reducing them
to a series of positive or negative answered
questions and linked them with the binary system.
• Positive answer- 1
• Negative answer- 0
• System known as Boolean Logic
• Fundamental principle for the design of computer
circuits
16. Dr. Herman Hollerith
• American statistician, invented machine called
Tabulating machine
• Capable of reading data, processing it and
giving the desired output
• Input given through punched cards
• These were used to record and store data
or information
17. John Von Neumann
• Modern type computer came into existence by the
efforts of John von Neumann
• Practiced storing data and instructions in binary code
in memory
• Initiated the use of memory od store data as well as
program
• Neumann with Eckert and Mauchly built EDVAC using
binary code in 1950
• EDVAC concept of storing programs on puched cards
led to the advancement of computers we know today
20. Howard Aiken
• Primary engineer in IBM
• Developed the first automatics sequence-
controlled calculator the Mark-1 in 1944
21. ENIAC
• Electronic Numeric integrator and calculator
• First general purpose electronic digital
computer
• Developed by John Mauchly and J. Presper
Eckert
• Consisted of 18,000 vacuum tubes and was
1000 times faster than Mark-1
23. UNIVAC-1
• Universal automatic computer-1
• First commercial electronic computer developed by J.
Presper Eckert and John Mauchly in 1951
• First computer to handle both numeric and text data
