What are FINE ARTS?
According to a few famous writers the fine art idea is the origination of the modern time in the West. In other
words, “Art” meant approx. the exact thing as the Greek word “techne” which means “skill” in English. In General
terms, fine art is "an art which is basically created primarily for intellectual & aesthetic pretensions and is judged
for its persuasiveness & beauty, notably, sculpture, drawing, painting, graphics, watercolour, and architecture."
Historically, the major five fine arts were sculpture, painting, architecture, music, and poetry, with performing arts
involving dance & theatre.
If you are looking for the best university to pursue a Fine Arts Course, join IIS University.
At present, the scope of fine arts generally contains modern forms like photography, film, design, video
production or editing, and conceptual art.
Fine arts are categorized into two parts which are:-
1. Visual Arts
2. Performing Arts
1. Visual Arts
Visual arts contain two segments which are the following:-
I. Two-Dimensional Works
II. Three-Dimensional Works
I. Two-Dimensional Works
 Photography
Photography in fine arts applies to photographs or pictures that are developed to fulfil the artist’s creative
chimera.
 Drawing & Painting
Drawing is considered as one of the main forms of the visual arts, and for that painters also need good drawing
skills. Common instruments of drawing consist: pen & ink, graphite pencils, charcoal, chalk, wax colour pencils,
pastels, crayons, markers, inked brushes, etc. There are a variety of sub-categories in the drawing which consists
of creating comics & cartooning.
Fine arts Painting refers to applying the paint on a flat surface using various colours. For many Centuries, Portable
paintings on canvas or wood panel have been the most important in Western culture. Those paintings which are
used on a book or its cover are known as "miniatures". In western version of painting, Watercolors are used on a
paper through various mediums like brushes, chalks, etc.
 Printmaking
Printmaking in Fine Arts includes the creation of images on the paper & it can be reproduced many times by the
process of printing. For several centuries, printmaking has been a significant medium of artists, in West & East
Asia. Historic techniques mainly consist of woodblock printing in East Asia, and woodcut, engraving, and etching in
West Asia.
Many nearly identical prints can be known as an edition. In the modern age, each print is numbered & signed
showing a "limited edition" mark. Prints are also published in the form of a book or a book of the artist. A single
print can be the product of one or more techniques.
 Calligraphy
Calligraphy is a part of Fine art. The definition of calligraphy is "an art of giving form to signs in a harmonious,
expressive, and skilful manner".
 Mosaics
Those images are Mosaics which are created with tiny pieces of glass or stone, known as tesserae. Mosaics can be
functional or decorative. Such artists who design & creates mosaics are known as a mosaicist or mosaic artist.
Realistic mosaics are developed by the Romans & Ancient Greeks.
II. Three-Dimensional Works
 Sculpture
The Sculpture is a part of fine arts developed by shaping plastic or hard material, generally stone wood, or metal.
Some of the sculptures are directly developed by carving; others are assembled, fired & built up, moulded,
welded, or cast.
The Sculpture is regarded as one of the plastic arts, as it contains the use of materials which can be modulated or
moulded. If in a garden setting, many sculptures are together then it may be considered as a sculpture garden.
 Architecture
Architecture is mostly referred to as three-dimensional art. The works of Architecture are considered as political &
cultural symbols. Usually, the Historical civilizations of any region are originally recognized by their architectural
achievements. Roman Colosseum & pyramids of Egypt are such buildings which are cultural symbols. Architectural
monuments are mainly known to identify various regions, cities, and cultures.
 Conceptual art
Conceptual art is one of the parts of fine arts. In this art in idea(s) or concept(s) are included in the work to take
the priority over material concerns & traditional aesthetic.
