Students can identify the historical background and current literature about virtual worlds and position it among games and Web 2.0 information solutions. 2. Students can navigate, communicate and manage virtual worlds objects.3. Students can identify and analyze human interaction in virtual worlds.Objectives and Activities Week by Week1. Week One (Oct 8) – Survival 101=======================a. Objective: Students will be able to master movement, navigation, communication and virtual world etiquette using Second Life. b. Activities: move, control cameras, use all forms of chat and Voice over IP, user profiles, groups, notifications, and set preferences. Introduction to V-Quiz.2. Week Two (Oct 15)– Knowing the Environment================================a. Objective: Examine how virtual worlds are modeled using SL as a framework. b. Activity: V-Quiz. Object interaction, maps, teleportation, stills, audio/video. Participate in a Scavenger Hunt on the island. 3. Week Three (Oct 22) – Avatar Identity===========================a. Objective: Examine avatar identity, reputation, role play and agency.b. Activity: V-Quiz. Modify avatars. Inventory management. Use attachments and HUDs. c. Speaker4. Week Four (Oct 29) – Interacting with Content================================a. Objective: Demonstrate knowledge interaction with real time objects and content.b. Activity: V-Quiz. Week Ten (Dec 17) – Final Paper Due and continued presentations of other virtual worlds by student============a. Paper Due by 6:00 pm sent to avatar@u.washington.edu. No Late Papers will be accepted.b. Prepare an information analysis of your virtual world to accompany your presentation. i. Analysis must include historical and Web 2.0 perspectives;ii. Analyze how human interaction occursiii. Analyze the values, affordances, issues and risks associated to one of the three specific areas: education, business or entertainment. iv. Finally, you must include recommendations for improving the environment.
- 4. Students can perform an information analysis of virtual world values, issues and risks and prepare recommended solutions.5. Students can present in world to executive and technical level audiences about virtual worlds.
