Katalon Cucumber BDD (Behavior-driven Development) - Setting-up
and Installation
• Go to the Katalon Studio for downloading the latest version.
System Requirements for Katalon Studio Installation
Requirements Specification
Operating System Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, macOS
10.11+, Linux (Ubuntu based)
Memory Minimum: 2 GB RAM (32-bit) or 4 GB RAM
(64-bit)
Recommendation for concurrent executions
(and execution with Docker): the number of
concurrent sessions x 2GB.
Example: Recommended RAM for 3
concurrent execution sessions is 6GB (3 x
2GB).
CPU Minimum: 2 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-

How to Create Cucumber Tests in Katalon
• Create a new project in the Katalon IDE. The user can create a new project from the
main menu, select the File then click on the New, and then Project. The New Project
pop-up will be displayed. Select the Type of the project like Web, Mobile (which includes
all standard-features for Web, Mobile and API Testing), API/Web Services (Exclusive API
/ Web Service Testing features including Quick Start Wizard, File or URL Import
Swagger/ WSDL, Request History list and more). Specify the new project's name,
location, definition, and click OK.

Features File is located in your project directory in the ‘Include/ Features' folder and can be
viewed from Test Explorer.
BDD conventions (Given, When, Then) must obey the content of the Features Set. There will be
an option to ' Generate sample feature template ' to generate a sample template for your
features file when you create a new feature file.
The Feature File editor includes the different actions for maintenance of the feature file
difficulties like:
• The feature file format is not well structured.
• Find which phase concepts are mapped to the current stage of Gherkin.
• Re-calculate steps in the Features file when Step Definition Description changes.

• Correct formatting: - Do the formatting again properly in the feature file.
• Find steps: - In existing Step Definitions files, find relevant steps of the current
Gherkin step.
• Re-calculate steps: - Re-calculate steps in the feature file when Step Definitions
change.

For instance, create one Feature file with the name as ‘Sample.feature’. Add steps in the
feature file for login into an application and then logout. In order to help the user, build the
correct step definitions, Katalon Studio software inspection will identify and highlight any
missing step definitions in Feature File.
Object Creation
Gherkin step in the Feature file must be specified as a collection of programming code to allow
the computer to execute these steps actions.
Add the locators into the Object repository
• Right click on the Object RepositoryNewTest Object. Enter the Object Name and
click on the OK button. Object Repository for the object gets opened, add the properties

and given the value for the attribute. Check the Detect Object by? Check the box - the
value is displayed in the selected locator panel.
Step Definition
Create Step Definitions for the corresponding feature file. Step Definitions can be written in any
programming language that is supported by Cucumber, including Groovy and Java.
How to Run the Cucumber Test
There are different ways to run the tests in Katalon. User can directly run the Feature File using
the run button. User is able to select the browser which he/she needs to run the scripts. In

Katalon Studio, user can set the default browser in project settings. User is able to run the script
via Test Suites, Select the Test Suite and Run the tests. The execution status
[Running/Terminated/Done] will be displayed in the Job Progress tab and the steps are
displayed under Log Viewer. Execution can be stopped while clicking on the Red colored square
button in the right corner of the job progress panel or you just click on the stop button in the
top bar menu. Once the stop/terminate button is clicked, the execution will be terminated.
Each execution step is properly visible in the log viewer with Tree view mode.

Receiving Cucumber Reports
Katalon has no custom report for the execution of Cucumber feature file. Katalon Studio
generates Cucumber Reports if the test cases contain the Cucumber Features file and then the
execution should happen in Test Suite / Test Suite collection level. The generated Cucumber
report will be located in the same folder as the folder for Katalon Studio report. In the Katalon
studio IDE, right click on the project explorer, select ‘Open Containing Folder’ and then move to
Reports folder in the Katalon project folder. Katalon studio supports JSON, XML, HTML formats
for Cucumber Reports.
