Kinetech Arts is a non-profit that creates interactive public art installations using sensors and data visualization. Some of their installations include:
1) The Data Gallery, which maps body movements to interactions in a 3D environment and audio frequencies to animated particles.
2) The Judgment Wall, where 3D scans of faces are projected and seem to pass judgment on viewers. Viewers can also have their likeness added.
3) A Twitter visualizer using an Oculus Rift headset that shows tweets emerging from locations on a virtual globe.
2. Kinetech Arts Selected Interactive Installations
The following projects were
developed and presented as
public art installations by our
non-profit, creative partner
Kinetech Arts. Imagine using
these components, backed
by Kineviz technology, to drive
your conference attendee
user engagement solution.
3. Real-time data is mapped into a 3D world to create
a sensational virtual experience. Visualization
components used in this piece included:
„„ Body: The Data Gallery translates your body’s
movements into interaction with the environment.
„„ Music: Audio frequencies are translated into animated
particles that light up the entire landscape.
„„ Twitter: Live tweets are pulled in, each generating its
own unique form based on the number of retweets.
Technology Used
„„ Wii Balance Board
„„ Microsoft Kinect
„„ WebGL and Javascript software
„„ Live Twitter data
„„ HD projector
„„ MacBook Pro laptop computer

Data Landscape
Motion Capture Scheme
Watch the Kinetech Arts Data Landscape video
The user’s motion (A) is captured by a Wii Balance Board (B)
and Kinect sensor (C) and sent to the computer (D), where
they are mapped to a digital representation of the user’s
skeletal structure, and merged into a 3-dimensional virtual
environment (E). A projector (F) sends the resulting real-time
animated visualization onto a screen (G).
4. The Judgment Wall is a fun, collaborative exploration
of high resolution scanning technology, surveillance,
and the uncanny sense of humor of Silicon Valley.
Unwitting victims walk past a projected grid of high
resolution 3D busts. Once they land in front of the
wall, the eyes of the “digital jury” turn toward the
user, seemingly “passing judgment” on him/her.
Patrons dissatisfied with merely being judged can opt
to lend their virtual likeness to the exhibit. Sitting for a
short 3D scanning session gives them the opportunity
to judge their peers from high upon our digital perch.

5. This VR enhanced Twitter visualizer is viewable
through an Oculus Rift VR headset with a Leap
Motion sensor mounted on it to detect the user’s head
movements. Tweets were shown emerging from geo-
accurate locations on a virtual model of Earth. Users
wearing the headset could turn their heads back
and forth to view all 360 degrees of the visualization
and use physical gestures to zoom in and out.

6. This immersive visualization represents the
complex flow of real-time Twitter communication
as a clear and colorful social relations graph..
Each node represents a unique Twitter user whose
content is shown emanating from the earth.
The user’s connection graph is generated by analyzing
retweets. The conversations seem to have a mind of their
own as they float above the earth like living satellites.

7. This colorful installation, exhibited at the Marin
Headlands Center for the Arts Spring 2015 Open
House, puts the paintbrush at your feet. Using the
Wii Balance Board, and a floor projection, users
create complex fluid paintings just by leaning.
Driven by fractal noise, the overlapping ribbons
of color combine to create a delicate yet intricate
expression of one’s true inner mindscape.
