These are scattered throughout the accepted abstracts in section (C) Proceedings.

9. WORK IN PROGRESS:

1. Health Services Research Advisor at Columbia University Department of Surgery
November 2009 – Present (7 months)
Assist in the analysis of the HCUP- AHCQR Kids Data Base using SAS to study Biliary atresia (BA) is
a rare disease but if untreated invariably leads to death. The Kasai hepatoportoenterostomy (HPE) is the
surgical reconstruction for infants with BA. A successful HPE can prevent liver injury but if the HPE
fails the child will require a liver transplant. Studies of other pediatric conditions have suggested
improved outcomes for children treated in high volume hospitals but have also shown disparity in
access to care. We analyzed a comprehensive pediatric database to assess demographic and clinical
predictors of outcomes of HPE for BA. PIs Gudrun Aspelund, Robert Cowles and Abbey Fingeret

Health Services Research Advisor at Columbia University Department of Surgery November 2009 – Present (7 months) Assist in the analysis of the HCUP- AHCQR Kids Data Base using SAS to study Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare disease but if untreated invariably leads to death. The Kasai hepatoportoenterostomy (HPE) is the surgical reconstruction for infants with BA. A successful HPE can prevent liver injury but if the HPE fails the child will require a liver transplant. Studies of other pediatric conditions have suggested improved outcomes for children treated in high volume hospitals but have also shown disparity in access to care. We analyzed a comprehensive pediatric database to assess demographic and clinical predictors of outcomes of HPE for BA. PIs Gudrun Aspelund, Robert Cowles and Abbey Fingeret 9.
