The processes to produce non-ferrous metals
are as varied and complex as the equipment
required for the purpose.
For example, the refractory linings of furnaces
used in the lead recycling industry are
particularly exposed to attack by acidic slags,
and also to infiltration by overheated melts at
temperatures above 1000 °C. In addition, they
are subjected to mechanical wear mechanisms
due to scrap charging and the rotation of the
furnace.

3. Short rotary furnaces
Short rotary furnaces are a central part for the
lead recycling industry, and therefore the most
important furnace type for recycling operations.
Temperatures above 1000 °C, the low viscosity
of molten lead, the contact with acidic slags
plus the addition of alkalis, and the presence
of sulfur during the recycling process promote
high wear of the refractory lining.
With their low porosity, minimum SiO2 content,
and high wear resistance, Refratechnik Steel's
magnesia chromite-based products counteract
these mechanisms.
