II. REPORT SYNOPSIS
A worldwide demand for reduction in use of chemical pesticides, regarded by consumers as harmful, is
leading to the development of innovative and less harmful plant protection strategies. Pesticides such as
organochlorine insecticides, methyl bromide, etc., are discontinued due to their health hazards. Alternative
protection systems (biological products) are the need of the future and should be devised in place of
conventional pesticides. Global pesticide market is projected to reach about US$ XX.XX billion by 2020 from
an estimated US$ XX.XX billion in 2012, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX.XX %
during the analysis period 2005-2020.
Agriculture is deemed as human life’s backbone. Plant protection purely by chemical means has its own
disadvantages. Pesticides are found to cause toxicity problems to human life and the environment. Hence,
the need for developing biopesticides assumes all the more importance. The crux of the matter is that
companies just cannot market a product as eco-friendly; they have to live up to the expectations.
The biopesticides industry mostly encompasses small-to-medium enterprises. All pesticide companies
(whether chemical or bio-control) in the United States must be registered according to the EPA biopesticide
definition, which is an expensive affair. Hence, it leads to the question of how small companies can register,
market, and compete with global agrochemical bigwigs. The common farmer is highly likely to choose a
reputed, cheaper brand over a private-label, though it may be labeled as “green”.
However, the trend towards eco-friendly products is making biopesticides more noticeable than ever
before. Growing consumer awareness for food and agricultural products with less or no chemical residues,
and growers’ and farmers’ demand for safer pesticides has triggered a bid demand for biopesticides.
Consequently, big agrochemical companies too are making inroads into the biopesticides market through
takeovers, alliances, license deals, collaborations, etc. For example, BASF AG made a marketing deal with
US biopesticide company AgraQuest while Bayer AG acquired Agrogreen’s (Israel) certain businesses.
Apparently such deals are lucrative; however, big companies are wary as any negative effect would mar
their brands.
Biopesticides include microbial pesticides, entomopathogenic nematodes, baculoviruses, plant derived
pesticides, and Insect pheromones, are increasingly being tested as alternatives to chemical pesticides and
key components of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The stark truth is that, however, biopesticides
constitute a very small fraction of the global pesticides market. Global biopesticides market is projected to
reach about US$ XX.XX billion by 2020 from an estimated US$ XX.XX billion in 2012, growing at a
compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX.XX % during the analysis period 2005-2020.
Biopesticides are the fastest growing segment of the agrochemical industry. Biopesticides have a very high
volume of registrations with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) than conventional pesticides.
Major food buyers such as McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, Sysco, etc., too have voiced requests to suppliers to use
“sustainable” agricultural practices, which has given more impetus to biopesticides. Exported American
commodities’ Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) tags are also a growing issue leading to more interest in
biopesticides.
It takes almost two years to get an EPA registration. Though positivity exists for biopesticides, their efficacy
levels are doubtful when compared to conventional pesticides. Biopesticides are found to be more effective

as alternatives, work well in early season, and also in situations where there is least pest pressure.
Biopesticides are also finding appeal from growers who need to use pest control products with a short pre-
harvest interval, or if they are faced with the situation that requires them to return to the field quickly after
an application of pesticide.
The next five years are expected to see a boom in new biopesticides.

BIOPESTICIDES – THE OUTLOOK
Biopesticides market is projected to grow healthy at a CAGR of XX.XX % through 2020. The growth of global
biopesticides industry is related to the popularity of insect resistance crops. The huge demand for
biopesticides has led to the intervention of new technologies in agricultural practices that would generate
new and innovative changes in production. The global market for biopesticides is very small, compared to
the US$ XX.XX billion (2010) chemical pesticides market. Biopesticides market is expected to reach US$
XX.XX billion by the year 2020 from an estimated US$ XX.XX billion in 2012.
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has maximum advantage over other products such as insect pathogens and
natural plants. With the changing trends and improved technologies, insect resistance crops with Bt
procedures are expected to dominate the market. Biochemical pesticides (pheromones and natural plant
extracts) are expected to outshine the present market leaders, microbial pesticides in the long run.
Over a hundred microbial products are available worldwide. They can be effectively used in horticulture,
agriculture and forestry. North America, Japan and Europe are increasingly using these biocontrols.
However, cost factors and expensive R&D is hurdle for these biocontrols.
Increasing development and registration costs have steadily declined the number of new synthetic
pesticides coming into the market every year over the past decade. Insects too have become more resistant
to many products, which mean increased dosages or abandoning pesticides. Cost factors have led to
decrease in pesticide registrations and the availability of acceptable pesticides is also decreasing.
Government regulatory bodies are now coming up with improved measures to encourage biocontrol
companies. Increasing attention is being directed toward natural enemies such as predators, parasites, and
pathogens. None of these predators or parasites can be mass-produced and stored for long periods of time
and must be raised in vivo. The most desirable product is a biocontrol agent that possesses all the
advantageous characteristics of a chemical pesticide, displays high toxicity to the target organisms, can be
mass produced, and also have a long shelf life.…………………………………

IV. PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY/RESEARCH
 Biopesticides form an essential group of pesticides that can bring down the risks of the use of
pesticides
 One more advantage is that even in small quantities they are quite effective. As they are prone to rapid
decomposition they do not leave behind bothersome residues.
 Biopesticides normally have a limited target range and a particular mode of action.
 Biopesticides do not leave behind any residue problems.
 The suppression of pests can be performed by the production of a toxin specific to the pest.
 The reduction of pests can be achieved through the creation of a disease.
 The suppressing of pests can be brought about by preventing the establishment of other
microorganisms through competition or by adopting other modes of action.
 Due to the development of many strains of bacillus thuringiensis, there are now strains readily
available that can control fly larvae. These strains have the ability to control black flies and mosquitoes.
 All over the world an extensive use of bacillus thuringiensis and bacillus thuringiensis or Bt can be
observed. It is basically a pathogen of lepidopterous pests which are known to cause the maximum
damage.
 Among these can be found the American bollworm in cotton and the stem borers in rice. As they get
ingested by the pest larvae the bacillus thuringiensis releases toxins which attack the mid gut of the
pest and destroys it over time.
 The baculoviruses are target specific in nature and have the capability to infect and kill numerous plant
pests. Particularly against the lepidopterous pests that damage vegetables, rice and cotton.
 As the demand grows to bring down the use of agrochemicals and their residues in food and the
environment, there is more importance given to the biological control of agricultural pests.
 Many viruses of some families are seen to infect insects. Only the viruses that belong to the family
Baculoviridae have been used as biopesticides as they are highly specialized, safe to humans and
wildlife and have a very narrow specificity.
 Many viruses of some families are seen to infect insects. Only the viruses that belong to the family
Baculoviridae have been used as biopesticides as they are highly specialized, safe to humans and
wildlife and have a very narrow specificity.
 In certain nations where there is restriction in place for the use of genetically modified organisms, the
improvements are being carried out primarily at the level of diagnostics. In vitro production and some
alterations in biopesticide formulations are also being undertaken.
 The destructive action of baculoviruses can be enhanced through the genetic modifications of the
baculovirus genome with the help of genes of some other natural pathogen. There is the potential of
improvement in baculoviruses through the means of genetic modifications.
 The neem which comes from the neem tree known as Azadirachta indica is comprised of different
chemicals which includes azadirachtin. This particular chemical is known to affect the digestive process
and the reproductive system of several pests that have to be controlled.

Biopesticides – A Perspective
Biopesticides are derivatives of natural substances and are used for killing or repelling the plant pests as
well as disease causing agents like ticks and mosquitoes. The natural substances include certain bacteria,
viruses, plants, animals, and minerals. The bacterial species Bacillus thuringiensis, the virus NPV [nuclear
polyhedrosis virus], genetically modified pest resistant plants like Bt cotton, animal sources like sex
pheromones, and minerals like canola oil are examples of biopesticides. These are considered to be
effective substitutes for synthetic chemical pesticides.
Maintenance of lawn, forests, botanic gardens, and orchards involves the use of biopesticides. But the
beneficial effects of biopesticides are not confined to plant protection alone. They are of importance in the
control of disease vectors like mosquitoes and flies. There is no doubt that direct beneficiaries of employing
biopesticides are cultivators of food crops. But, indirectly food processing industries, exporters and retail
sellers of food grains, and ultimately the consumers also stand to gain from the use of biopesticides.
 Biopesticides are those which are derived from natural materials such as animals, plants,
microorganisms and minerals. Ex: Canola oil and baking soda are known to be called as biopesticides as
they have some pesticidal properties.
 They are biological agents that kill plants and animals which harm the human beings. Most of these
biologically made pesticides are known as bioinsecticides. Their function is to kill the insects and pests.
 Those materials which have the ability to kill fungi and nematicide are known as biofungicides, and are
also called as Bionematicides.
 Rodenticides has the ability to harm agents such as insects, nematodes (or roundworms), fungi, weeds,
and rodents etc.

  • 3. RITMIR022: Biopesticides – A Market Insight Report, July 2013 © RI Technologies - www.researchimpact.com Sample Page - 3 II. REPORT SYNOPSIS A worldwide demand for reduction in use of chemical pesticides, regarded by consumers as harmful, is leading to the development of innovative and less harmful plant protection strategies. Pesticides such as organochlorine insecticides, methyl bromide, etc., are discontinued due to their health hazards. Alternative protection systems (biological products) are the need of the future and should be devised in place of conventional pesticides. Global pesticide market is projected to reach about US$ XX.XX billion by 2020 from an estimated US$ XX.XX billion in 2012, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX.XX % during the analysis period 2005-2020. Agriculture is deemed as human life’s backbone. Plant protection purely by chemical means has its own disadvantages. Pesticides are found to cause toxicity problems to human life and the environment. Hence, the need for developing biopesticides assumes all the more importance. The crux of the matter is that companies just cannot market a product as eco-friendly; they have to live up to the expectations. The biopesticides industry mostly encompasses small-to-medium enterprises. All pesticide companies (whether chemical or bio-control) in the United States must be registered according to the EPA biopesticide definition, which is an expensive affair. Hence, it leads to the question of how small companies can register, market, and compete with global agrochemical bigwigs. The common farmer is highly likely to choose a reputed, cheaper brand over a private-label, though it may be labeled as “green”. However, the trend towards eco-friendly products is making biopesticides more noticeable than ever before. Growing consumer awareness for food and agricultural products with less or no chemical residues, and growers’ and farmers’ demand for safer pesticides has triggered a bid demand for biopesticides. Consequently, big agrochemical companies too are making inroads into the biopesticides market through takeovers, alliances, license deals, collaborations, etc. For example, BASF AG made a marketing deal with US biopesticide company AgraQuest while Bayer AG acquired Agrogreen’s (Israel) certain businesses. Apparently such deals are lucrative; however, big companies are wary as any negative effect would mar their brands. Biopesticides include microbial pesticides, entomopathogenic nematodes, baculoviruses, plant derived pesticides, and Insect pheromones, are increasingly being tested as alternatives to chemical pesticides and key components of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). The stark truth is that, however, biopesticides constitute a very small fraction of the global pesticides market. Global biopesticides market is projected to reach about US$ XX.XX billion by 2020 from an estimated US$ XX.XX billion in 2012, growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of XX.XX % during the analysis period 2005-2020. Biopesticides are the fastest growing segment of the agrochemical industry. Biopesticides have a very high volume of registrations with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) than conventional pesticides. Major food buyers such as McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, Sysco, etc., too have voiced requests to suppliers to use “sustainable” agricultural practices, which has given more impetus to biopesticides. Exported American commodities’ Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) tags are also a growing issue leading to more interest in biopesticides. It takes almost two years to get an EPA registration. Though positivity exists for biopesticides, their efficacy levels are doubtful when compared to conventional pesticides. Biopesticides are found to be more effective

Biopesticides are also finding appeal from growers who need to use pest control products with a short pre- harvest interval, or if they are faced with the situation that requires them to return to the field quickly after an application of pesticide. The next five years are expected to see a boom in new biopesticides. Segmentation of Biopesticides Exhibit 1. • 12. RITMIR022: Biopesticides – A Market Insight Report, July 2013 © RI Technologies - www.researchimpact.com Sample Page - 12 BIOPESTICIDES – THE OUTLOOK Biopesticides market is projected to grow healthy at a CAGR of XX.XX % through 2020. The growth of global biopesticides industry is related to the popularity of insect resistance crops. The huge demand for biopesticides has led to the intervention of new technologies in agricultural practices that would generate new and innovative changes in production. The global market for biopesticides is very small, compared to the US$ XX.XX billion (2010) chemical pesticides market. Biopesticides market is expected to reach US$ XX.XX billion by the year 2020 from an estimated US$ XX.XX billion in 2012. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has maximum advantage over other products such as insect pathogens and natural plants. With the changing trends and improved technologies, insect resistance crops with Bt procedures are expected to dominate the market. Biochemical pesticides (pheromones and natural plant extracts) are expected to outshine the present market leaders, microbial pesticides in the long run. Over a hundred microbial products are available worldwide. They can be effectively used in horticulture, agriculture and forestry. North America, Japan and Europe are increasingly using these biocontrols. However, cost factors and expensive R&D is hurdle for these biocontrols. Increasing development and registration costs have steadily declined the number of new synthetic pesticides coming into the market every year over the past decade. Insects too have become more resistant to many products, which mean increased dosages or abandoning pesticides. Cost factors have led to decrease in pesticide registrations and the availability of acceptable pesticides is also decreasing. Government regulatory bodies are now coming up with improved measures to encourage biocontrol companies. Increasing attention is being directed toward natural enemies such as predators, parasites, and pathogens. None of these predators or parasites can be mass-produced and stored for long periods of time and must be raised in vivo. The most desirable product is a biocontrol agent that possesses all the advantageous characteristics of a chemical pesticide, displays high toxicity to the target organisms, can be mass produced, and also have a long shelf life.…………………………………
  • 13. RITMIR022: Biopesticides – A Market Insight Report, July 2013 © RI Technologies - www.researchimpact.com Sample Page - 13 IV. PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY/RESEARCH  Biopesticides form an essential group of pesticides that can bring down the risks of the use of pesticides  One more advantage is that even in small quantities they are quite effective. As they are prone to rapid decomposition they do not leave behind bothersome residues.  Biopesticides normally have a limited target range and a particular mode of action.  Biopesticides do not leave behind any residue problems.  The suppression of pests can be performed by the production of a toxin specific to the pest.  The reduction of pests can be achieved through the creation of a disease.  The suppressing of pests can be brought about by preventing the establishment of other microorganisms through competition or by adopting other modes of action.  Due to the development of many strains of bacillus thuringiensis, there are now strains readily available that can control fly larvae. These strains have the ability to control black flies and mosquitoes.  All over the world an extensive use of bacillus thuringiensis and bacillus thuringiensis or Bt can be observed. It is basically a pathogen of lepidopterous pests which are known to cause the maximum damage.  Among these can be found the American bollworm in cotton and the stem borers in rice. As they get ingested by the pest larvae the bacillus thuringiensis releases toxins which attack the mid gut of the pest and destroys it over time.  The baculoviruses are target specific in nature and have the capability to infect and kill numerous plant pests. Particularly against the lepidopterous pests that damage vegetables, rice and cotton.  As the demand grows to bring down the use of agrochemicals and their residues in food and the environment, there is more importance given to the biological control of agricultural pests.  Many viruses of some families are seen to infect insects. Only the viruses that belong to the family Baculoviridae have been used as biopesticides as they are highly specialized, safe to humans and wildlife and have a very narrow specificity.  Many viruses of some families are seen to infect insects. Only the viruses that belong to the family Baculoviridae have been used as biopesticides as they are highly specialized, safe to humans and wildlife and have a very narrow specificity.  In certain nations where there is restriction in place for the use of genetically modified organisms, the improvements are being carried out primarily at the level of diagnostics. In vitro production and some alterations in biopesticide formulations are also being undertaken.  The destructive action of baculoviruses can be enhanced through the genetic modifications of the baculovirus genome with the help of genes of some other natural pathogen. There is the potential of improvement in baculoviruses through the means of genetic modifications.  The neem which comes from the neem tree known as Azadirachta indica is comprised of different chemicals which includes azadirachtin. This particular chemical is known to affect the digestive process and the reproductive system of several pests that have to be controlled.
  • 14. RITMIR022: Biopesticides – A Market Insight Report, July 2013 © RI Technologies - www.researchimpact.com Sample Page - 14 Biopesticides – A Perspective Biopesticides are derivatives of natural substances and are used for killing or repelling the plant pests as well as disease causing agents like ticks and mosquitoes. The natural substances include certain bacteria, viruses, plants, animals, and minerals. The bacterial species Bacillus thuringiensis, the virus NPV [nuclear polyhedrosis virus], genetically modified pest resistant plants like Bt cotton, animal sources like sex pheromones, and minerals like canola oil are examples of biopesticides. These are considered to be effective substitutes for synthetic chemical pesticides. Maintenance of lawn, forests, botanic gardens, and orchards involves the use of biopesticides. But the beneficial effects of biopesticides are not confined to plant protection alone. They are of importance in the control of disease vectors like mosquitoes and flies. There is no doubt that direct beneficiaries of employing biopesticides are cultivators of food crops. But, indirectly food processing industries, exporters and retail sellers of food grains, and ultimately the consumers also stand to gain from the use of biopesticides.  Biopesticides are those which are derived from natural materials such as animals, plants, microorganisms and minerals. Ex: Canola oil and baking soda are known to be called as biopesticides as they have some pesticidal properties.  They are biological agents that kill plants and animals which harm the human beings. Most of these biologically made pesticides are known as bioinsecticides. Their function is to kill the insects and pests.  Those materials which have the ability to kill fungi and nematicide are known as biofungicides, and are also called as Bionematicides.  Rodenticides has the ability to harm agents such as insects, nematodes (or roundworms), fungi, weeds, and rodents etc. Exhibit 8.
