Learn tips and best practices about how application performance management can help you successfully complete your migration. See how performance benchmarks and key performance indicators pre- and post-upgrade can help set expectations and measure results - streamlining the upgrade process.
Presentation includes:
- Who needs to upgrade to EMC Captiva 7.1
- 4 steps to getting prepared and details: 1) clean up existing Captiva system, 2) recommended new hardware/operating systems, 3) establish performance baselines, 4) test/prepare for update
- How you successfully QA your upgrade process

4. Clean Up Existing Captiva System
• Check for old batches, which can cause problems when updating
• Zero priority batches
• Task with error status
• Locked batches
• Old incomplete batches
• 7.1 Update process will update the
Captiva Database
4
1Reminder:
Reveille’s out-
of-box tests
identify old
batches
5. New Hardware/Operating Systems
• Take advantage of 64 bit OS for memory
• Update IA server to 64 Bit Windows
• Strongly recommended to enhance performance
• Enables access to full 32-bit memory space (4 GB)
• Update at least some of your module servers to 64 bit Windows
OS
• Some new IA modules will be strongly recommended to run on 64 bit Windows

Remember:
64-bit Windows
offers increased
performance and
security
6. Establish Performance Baseline
• Captiva Server Metrics for existing system
• DAL average execution time
• DAL average number of data requests
• DAL error count
• Processing message count
• VBA message thread queue length
• Database event queue length
• WMI Classes for this data
• Win32_PerfFormattedData_IA6Dal_IA6Dal
• Win32_PerfFormattedData_InputAccel_IA6Server_InputAccel

7. Test/ Prepare for Update
• Captiva Database Updates
• Create backup copy of current Captiva Database
• Run 7.1 database update program against this back up copy and
check for any errors
• Scripts or Batch files to cleanly shutdown and restart on Captiva
modules on all servers
• Shutdown Module services first
• Shutdown Captiva Server
• Apply updates
• Start Captiva Servers
• Start all module services
• Check all modules are connected

Don’t forget!
Reveille tests
can be used to
verify all
modules are
connected
9. Check update process
• Check update logs
• Database update logs
• Windows Event Logs on Captiva Module
servers
• Start of Captiva Module servers
• Confirm all modules are connected to new
Captiva IA servers
• Compare batch numbers in converted system
to those prior to conversion of database
• Check Server Side performance against
baseline data
• Process known set of batches and check for
expected results.
• Check documents were created as expected
