Alice Bell's new book on the history of climate change knowledge and inaction is fantastic. Some have missed what is NOT in the CIA's 1974 assessment of climate change and security risk. There's no mention of global warming from carbon dioxide. In Andrew Revkin's 1992 book on global warming, written for the American Museum of Natural History, he essentially predicted scientists would identify a "post-Holocene" period of Earth history and possibly name it for "its causative element." Originally published in Good Housekeeping, June 1991 “Help of the helpless” Vol. 212 Issue 6, p. 72 Andrew Revkin met Sister Michael while researching “The Burning Season – The Murder of Chico Mendes and the Fight for the Amazon Rain Forest,” his 1990 biography of the slain leader of the movement against deforestation and land invasions in the Brazilian Amazon. She had conducted a parallel investigation of the killing and provided the legal file. Building on more than 30 years of environmental journalism, he writes his prize-winning Dot Earth blog for the Opinion section of The New York Times and is the Senior Fellow for Environmental Understanding at Pace University’s Dyson College Institute for Sustainability and the Environment.

On March 31, 1985, Vladimir Alexandrov, the best known climate scientist in the Soviet Union because of his global campaign against nuclear winter with Carl Sagan, vanished while attending a conference in Spain on nuclear-free zones. He was probably a spy, although for whom - the United States, the Soviet Union, both - remains unclear. His case remains unsolved, perhaps because it wouldn't be in the interest of either government. Here's what's known of this strange tale, as I reported it back in 1986. There isn't much more to say even now.
