Transform big data into effective business intelligence.
Today’s technology means an enormous amount of
customer-related data is available to businesses.
While it may seem overwhelming, this data brings
with it great opportunities to get ahead of the crowd

You will need skilled people who can transform data into
actionable information for your business. The Master of

(as related to supply chain and logistics).
Outcomes
Graduates will have a thorough understanding of business
challenges. They will be able to identify problems and
opportunities in your organisation and to approach these
with the appropriate data and techniques. Importantly, they
will also be able to communicate these findings in a
compelling and insightful way.
Benefits to your organisation:
> smarter, more targeted marketing and communications
> maximise return on investment from marketing
> understand the full impact of marketing activity on sales
and customer retention
> effective distribution strategies
> optimised pricing

MCDONALD’S
Massey partnered with McDonald's, recognising the
company’s in-house education and allowing restaurant
managers and staff to cross credit some prior learning and
work towards a business degree.
This flexible solution to McDonald’s talent development
requirements means students can reduce their study time
considerably, which is of huge value to restaurant managers
who often run businesses with million-dollar turnovers, and to
staff who continue to work and earn while they study.
“Talent is a key focus for McDonald’s, and we’re delighted to
be able to offer the opportunity for higher education to our
restaurant managers,” says McDonald’s Restaurants New
Zealand managing director Patrick Wilson.
“The flexibility of being able to learn while you earn is
something many of our staff appreciate, and the Massey
University partnership is a fantastic extension of what
we can offer our people.”
QATAR AIRWAYS
A partnership with Qatar Airways has seen Qatari pilots,
engineers and managers enter a Massey MBA programme
with an emphasis on aviation.
Massey lecturers from both the MBA programme and the
School of Aviation travel to Doha to deliver the majority of
block courses. These face-to-face sessions are supported by
STREAM, Massey's online learning management system.
Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar al Baker says the Massey
MBA offering is about investing in local talent.
“We are not only sponsoring Qataris to work at Qatar Airways,
but we are also helping them build their career paths in the
aviation industry. This reflects our commitment to attract,
develop and, more importantly, retain our highly qualified
Qatari nationals.”

ASB BANK
ASB Bank took advantage of Massey’s flexible delivery options to up-skill a group of
employees with a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies (Personal Financial Planning).
Each paper was taught to a cohort comprised of only ASB staff, with the contact
courses taught at ASB’s offices.
The qualification equips graduates to give sound advice on financial products, and
satisfies the education requirements for becoming a Certified Financial
Planner Professional.
MARK YOUNG
MASSEY MBA ALUMNI, GENERAL MANAGER FINANCE AND
CORPORATE RESOURCES, TOYOTA NZ
After a decade with Toyota and having worked his way up through the ranks of the
company, Mark Young decided to apply for a Massey Executive MBA so that he could
learn from an external perspective and add value by bringing fresh ideas back to the
team.
Mark believes that the programme has changed the way he thinks and how he reacts.
The business models and theories Mark learned about on the course inspired him to
make changes within Toyota.
“I had the confidence to apply these models to the way Toyota approached projects.
The results were dramatic and we do things quite differently now. It was great to see
tangible benefits to the company as a direct result of doing my MBA," says Mark.
LEE RETIMANA
MASSEY MBA ALUMNI, FOUNDER AND CHIEF MARKETER, MURITAI MARKETING
Lee says the connections she made through studying at Massey have opened the
doors to a range of new opportunities that were unimaginable to her before, and the
MBA itself has been invaluable when dealing with new clients.
“It’s my credentials,” she says. “When people see those letters they accept that I
know what I am talking about. Having that MBA has been a positive thing in every
way. It tells people that I not only come with experience gained through doing, but I
also have knowledge that has come through learning at a highly academic level.”

STORIES
KPMG
Massey's Auckland Knowledge Exchange Hub is in its fourth year of a partnership with KPMG that sees our experts
help develop the professional services firm’s annual publication, the Financial Institutions Performance Survey Review
(FIPS).
The review is based on the performance data of New Zealand’s registered banks, major finance companies and
savings institutions. Massey staff and postgraduate students collect and analyse this data, mainly from publicly
available annual reports, before drafting a detailed forecasting report.
“Combining our resources with Massey has enabled us to bring together business insights and academic rigour
to deliver more useful thought leadership to our clients,” says KPMG partner Ben van Delden.
FARMLANDS
Farmlands established their partnership with Massey through the Auckland Knowledge Exchange Hub in 2014
because Massey’s knowledge and capability in food and process technology and scientific and market research
enabled it to deliver key business tools for the co-operative.
Massey’s expertise in economic forecasting will further assist Farmlands in developing a better understanding of the
wider market and providing targeted products and services to its shareholders.
Farmlands commented, “Our mission is to improve the profitability of our shareholders through the provision of rural
supplies and services and we see our partnership with Massey providing us with greater insight and additional
tools to further facilitate that undertaking to our shareholders.”
The success of this partnership has seen recent graduates from Massey joining the Farmlands team.
NZX
Massey University agriculture and business experts were contracted by NZX Agri, the agri information division of
stock exchange operator NZX, to create two online tools that allow the dairy industry to better translate global dairy
prices and forecast milk production trends. The project received funding support from Callaghan Innovation.
The Milk Production Predictor gives global dairy market participants clearer insight into future levels of New Zealand
milk production. The groundbreaking tool uses advanced modelling to predict New Zealand milk production three
months ahead.
The Farmgate Milk Price calculator is designed to give farmers a better understanding of the relationship between
Global Dairy Trade auction prices and their farm-gate milk price. The free-to-access calculator means there is no more
waiting to understand how the latest auction price affects New Zealand Fonterra Cooperative farmers. Users can
toggle between seasonal and snapshot calculators to build a better view on what to expect.
Both tools are hosted on NZX Agri's agrihq.co.nz website.

UNLEASHED SOFTWARE
Unleashed is a feature rich, yet simple to use, inventory management system and multi-channel sales tool. It helps
businesses manage suppliers, purchases, shipments, consignment stock, locations, warehouses and production.
The initial idea for the software was progressed at Massey’s business incubator, ecentre, through market validation
and creation of a business model. To gain credibility, it was initially launched into the SME market. The ecentre also
assisted with marketing and social media advice, enabling customer engagement and feedback.
Unleashed then sought to expand the business to become the first choice for inventory management. The ecentre
provided advice around debt and equity structures and helped with various fundraising rounds and to set up
shareholder agreements and a Board of Directors.
Gareth Berry, CEO of Unleashed Software says, “Being able to seed an idea, and having a collective around it to
nurture it, allowed us to develop the idea very quickly. It was great being in an environment with like-minded
people where you are able to share ideas in a non-threatening way, but still create your own space and culture.“
Unleashed Software has now been implemented in over 80 countries and in 2012 the company was named
Xero Partner of the Year in New Zealand and Australia.
ÄKINA FOUNDATION
Massey’s Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research Centre (SIERC) is a dedicated hub for the advancement
of entrepreneurship and innovation that encompasses both economic and social value creation.
SIERC is providing impact assessments for charitable trust the Akina Foundation on their Launchpad accelerator
programme, which is assisting new social enterprises to get off the ground.
Alex Hannant, Chief Executive of the Akina Foundation says, “Massey brings insight, research capability and
credibility to this critical work. And most importantly, real data so we know where to improve our practice
going forward.”
