– The RAMP program will prepare you to become a
Van Operator in the moving and storage industry.
– In this presentation, you will learn about the
program, the career opportunity, the training and
how to qualify.

3. What is RAMP?
 A certificate recognized by the American Moving &
Storage Association (AMSA) after completion of two
training programs:
– A 3-week class at Jefferson Community &
Technical College (JCTC) in Louisville, KY
– A 3- to 4-week CDL training (if needed) at an
approved truck driving school
 Prepares you to start an entry-level career as a Van
Operator within the moving and storage industry.
 Employer partners have agreed to hire qualified
RAMP graduates at a salary of $40,000 per year and
above.

4. What is the Moving and Storage
industry?
 The industry provide transportation and warehousing services for the household goods of
people who are moving to new jobs and homes
 The industry represents an efficient network of national moving companies (van lines);
local agents; regional and local independent full-service moving; and independent
contractors
 The industry consists of 7,000 companies that altogether do $12.6 billion of business
annually at 14,000 locations providing 93,800 jobs

5. Who are Van Operators?
 Drivers are called Van Operators in recognition of their job
duties beyond simply driving. Van Operators also manage the
moves, supervise the teams, provide customer service and
pack and load household items.
 Van Operators maybe hired as:
– Full time employees – “Company Driver”
 Salaried employee of a company
– Owner – Operators
 Own their own cab and contract with moving companies to haul their
trailers

8. What’s the salary range?
 Participating RAMP employers will pay at least
$40,000 yearly salary for company drivers
 AMSA data show a typical salary is between $50k-
$80k annually
– Typically includes health, dental, retirement, etc.
 Veteran Owner-Operators can make $100k-$160k
depending on how they handle finances and cost of
equipment

10. How do you qualify?
RAMP minimum qualifications
 Must be 21 years old
 High school diploma / GED
 Approval for WIA training/funding
 TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education)
 Predictive Index (PI) Assessment
 Criminal background review
 Driving record review
 DOT drug screen / physical

11. What is the cost of the Program?
 Trainingis FREE to candidates who qualify
 Funding provided by the Workforce
Investment Act (WIA)

12. What can I expect from RAMP Training
at JCTC?
 3-week program developed in partnership with Jefferson
Community & Technical College (JCTC) and the American
Moving & Storage Association (AMSA)
 Taught by an industry expert
 Awards 4 hours college credit at JCTC upon completion
 Includes hands-on learning and classroom content:
– Customer Service
– Effective team leadership
– Safety and wellness
– Inventory procedures
– Best practices in packing and loading
– Job management, including scheduling and supervision
– Managing personal life while on the road

13. What is the RAMP training schedule?
 RAMP classes begin every month!
– Classes fill up quickly so reserve your seat for a future
class!
 RAMP classes are held:
– Monday – Friday from 8:00am to 1:00pm
 RAMP classes are a total of 78 hours:
– 75 hours of content training
– 3 hours of resume writing and interview techniques
 RAMP classes include opportunities to interview with
RAMP-partner employers

14. Will I need CDL Training?
 Candidates WITHOUT a CDL license will enroll into
CDL training to meet industry standards AND RAMP
training
 CDL training takes 3 to 4 weeks depending on the
truck driving school
 CDL classes are 7am – 5pm, depending on the truck
driving school
 CDL classes will be coordinated with the schedule of
the RAMP class at JCTC

15. What are the next steps?
