1. FITB
The book _________ __ _________ by Geoffrey Boycott is strictly
speaking neither entirely a cricket book nor an autobiography.
The book’s title is a play on the ‘X’, an area just outside the off stump
most challenging to the batsman. Boycott is credited with coining the
phrase, though it appeared in the Australian media the year before he
first used it on England’s 1990 tour of the West Indies.
2. ID THE CRICKETER
3. ID X
Australian Cricket Board officials airily offered Channel 9 the possibility
of some kind of shared arrangement in three years' time.
X wanted an exclusive deal, he wanted it now, and he was willing to offer
$A500,000 a year, seven times the ABC figure. He was rebuffed. The
exact wording of what he said next is in dispute; their import is not.
According to X, he told the gentlemanly pair, Ray Steele and Bob Parish:
"There's a little bit of the whore in all of us. Gentlemen, name your price."
According to Steele, he said: "We're all harlots. Name your price."
4. FITB
Dr. Seamus Hogan and Dr. Scott Brooker, two economists from the
University of Canterbury co-created the _____, a rather new approach to
solve a long standing problem in cricket.
Brooker graduated from Canterbury University with his PhD on
"An economic analysis of ability, strategy and fairness in one-day
international cricket".
Indian fans might have seen it first around 2013-14.
5. WHO?
X (18 July 1848 – 23 October 1915) was an English amateur cricketer
and a physician who was important in the development of the sport and
is widely considered one of its greatest-ever players, with some calling
him “The father of cricket”.
His popularity goes beyond cricket and was seen so when the 1975
movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” used his face to represent God.
6. FITB
Cricket Max was a new format invented and designed by ______ _____
with the following rationale:
“I invented and designed Cricket Max because I felt it was time to provide
to our spectators and TV viewers a game of cricket that was short in
duration, very colourful, kept some old traditions and highlighted the best
skills in the game.”
The first game was sponsored by Pepsi Max and the BNZ and took place
at Cornwall Park (Auckland) on 5th Feb, 1996.

9. FITB
On this day 12 years ago, a disbelieving crowd at the Wanderers in
Johannesburg witnessed the greatest ODI of all time.
In the series decider, the visitors had smashed 434/4 in 50 overs, all
thanks to Ponting’s 164 off 105 balls and quick fifties from Gilchrist and
Hussey and were looking at an easy win.
However, _________ _____ had other ideas and smashed 175 off 111 balls
to help South Africa chase the record total with one ball to spare.
10. WHO?
11. WHAT NICKNAME?
Although Glenn McGrath has answered to
many nicknames over the years, like Rhino,
Ninger, Nuff Nuff, ______ is the one which
has stuck throughout. McGrath is called
______ because of his thin legs.
Brad McNamara, his NSW teammate said to
him “You’s stolen a ______’s legs, McGrath”,
and the name stuck.
12. FITB
The differences between ______
and the hook shot are:
• Hook shot needs to be played
above head, but this shot
must be played near the
shoulders.
• We need to lift our leg to play
hook, but we have to lift and
stretch our leg to play this
shot.
13. CLAIM TO FAME?
A Delhiite by the name of Vishal Malhotra became an overnight
sensation a few years ago.
Supposed to be a part of a one-off thing, he was called back owing to the
popularity of the thing, and was now part of a series.
You’ve laughed at his misery, mocked him at times and even
sympathised with him.
14. FITB
They called his fielding a liability and his build that of a club bouncer,
but _______ ________ didn't take the derisive descriptions to heart.
Instead, on the global stage, he got two high-priced wickets, took the
catch of a lifetime, and met his favourite players.
"The catch itself was funny. I was going to give Malachi a high-five but
when I saw the group of guys who were running towards me, I changed
direction and went the opposite way. When I looked behind, quite a few of
them were running after me. I thought that was very funny."
15. FITB
Who would have imagined a couple of innocuous pink _____ _____
playing a part in what ended as a memorable overseas Indian test win?
Zaheer Khan, India’s lone gunman with the ball, admitted that England’s
prank last evening was ‘insulting’ and acted as a spur for his swing-
bowling heroics in the second innings.
“When I was batting, there were some _____ _____ on the crease, so I
chucked one off the wicket. When I played the next ball there were again
some _____ _____ on the wicket. So obviously there was someone who was
throwing it on the wicket, which I didn’t like.”
16*. ID X AND Y
Pacy teenager debutant X was the star of the first half of the game,
taking a five-for to knock India over for 105 in the second ODI in Mirpur,
their lowest ever against Bangladesh.
However that total was 47 too many for the Bangladesh batsmen all
thanks to Y, who conjured his career best figures, and the best ever
bowling figures for India in ODIs to take his team to an unimaginable
victory.
17*. TEAMS INVOLVED?
Cricket touched a new high when a few mountaineers played a T20
charity match to raise £250,000 for the Lord’ Taverners and the
Himalayan Trust UK.
Both sides took 15 players for the game, along with the medical staff and
the groundsmen all of whom made the nine-day trek to reach the pitch.
The match was played on a pitch on the Gorak Shep plateau in Nepal,
Richard Kirtley, the expedition leader told.
18*. ID X AND Y
X played one of the best ever innings, making a brisk 173 off 155 balls –
a then-record score to take the English total to 324 setting them up for
an easy win at the Nehru Stadium, Pune.
However the innings is often forgotten due to Y’s historical achievement
on the same day just 150 km away at the Middle Income Group Ground,
Mumbai to lead Australia to a 363 run victory over the minnows.
Y had now created a list, which had its second entrant in 2010 and
currently contains 6 names.
19*. ID CAPTAIN AND TEST MATCH
In a memorable test match, the home team were up against it as the
opposition had piled on more than 550 runs. The home team ended up on
day 3 with still over 100 runs to avoid follow on. The captain was one of
the not out batsmen.
He blasted his teammates for playing rash ODI shots and not
concentrating on preserving their wickets.
The next morning, the captain played the first 3 balls all in the air and
scored a hundred that helped avoid follow on.
BEFORE LAST QUESTION
OF THE PRELIMS…
20*. ID X AND Y
X, born December 27, 1940, was one of the finest umpires the cricketing
world had ever seen. He officiated in six World Cups, from 1983 to 2003,
and was seldom known to make a poor decision. A unique trait of X that
will forever be etched in the minds of cricket viewers is his hopping at
the sight of Y on the scoreboard.
Whenever a team’s score arrived at 111, or on one of its multiples, X
would hop on one leg every few seconds until a run had been added.
Having been brought up in Instow, England, it’s a superstition that has
stayed with him ever since his club-cricket days.

  • 3. 1. FITB The book _________ __ _________ by Geoffrey Boycott is strictly speaking neither entirely a cricket book nor an autobiography. The book’s title is a play on the ‘X’, an area just outside the off stump most challenging to the batsman. Boycott is credited with coining the phrase, though it appeared in the Australian media the year before he first used it on England’s 1990 tour of the West Indies.
  • 4. 2. ID THE CRICKETER
  • 5. 3. ID X Australian Cricket Board officials airily offered Channel 9 the possibility of some kind of shared arrangement in three years' time. X wanted an exclusive deal, he wanted it now, and he was willing to offer $A500,000 a year, seven times the ABC figure. He was rebuffed. The exact wording of what he said next is in dispute; their import is not. According to X, he told the gentlemanly pair, Ray Steele and Bob Parish: "There's a little bit of the whore in all of us. Gentlemen, name your price." According to Steele, he said: "We're all harlots. Name your price."

Indian fans might have seen it first around 2013-14.
  • 7. 5. WHO? • 8. 6. FITB Cricket Max was a new format invented and designed by ______ _____ with the following rationale: “I invented and designed Cricket Max because I felt it was time to provide to our spectators and TV viewers a game of cricket that was short in duration, very colourful, kept some old traditions and highlighted the best skills in the game.” The first game was sponsored by Pepsi Max and the BNZ and took place at Cornwall Park (Auckland) on 5th Feb, 1996.
  • 10. 8. ID BLACKED OUT PORTION
  • 11. 9. FITB On this day 12 years ago, a disbelieving crowd at the Wanderers in Johannesburg witnessed the greatest ODI of all time. In the series decider, the visitors had smashed 434/4 in 50 overs, all thanks to Ponting’s 164 off 105 balls and quick fifties from Gilchrist and Hussey and were looking at an easy win. However, _________ _____ had other ideas and smashed 175 off 111 balls to help South Africa chase the record total with one ball to spare.

  • 14. 12. FITB The differences between ______ and the hook shot are: • Hook shot needs to be played above head, but this shot must be played near the shoulders. • We need to lift our leg to play hook, but we have to lift and stretch our leg to play this shot.
  • 15. 13. CLAIM TO FAME? A Delhiite by the name of Vishal Malhotra became an overnight sensation a few years ago. Supposed to be a part of a one-off thing, he was called back owing to the popularity of the thing, and was now part of a series. You’ve laughed at his misery, mocked him at times and even sympathised with him.
  • 16. 14. FITB They called his fielding a liability and his build that of a club bouncer, but _______ ________ didn't take the derisive descriptions to heart. Instead, on the global stage, he got two high-priced wickets, took the catch of a lifetime, and met his favourite players. "The catch itself was funny. I was going to give Malachi a high-five but when I saw the group of guys who were running towards me, I changed direction and went the opposite way. When I looked behind, quite a few of them were running after me. I thought that was very funny."
  • 17. 15. FITB Who would have imagined a couple of innocuous pink _____ _____ playing a part in what ended as a memorable overseas Indian test win? Zaheer Khan, India’s lone gunman with the ball, admitted that England’s prank last evening was ‘insulting’ and acted as a spur for his swing- bowling heroics in the second innings. “When I was batting, there were some _____ _____ on the crease, so I chucked one off the wicket. When I played the next ball there were again some _____ _____ on the wicket. So obviously there was someone who was throwing it on the wicket, which I didn’t like.”
  • 18. 16*. ID X AND Y Pacy teenager debutant X was the star of the first half of the game, taking a five-for to knock India over for 105 in the second ODI in Mirpur, their lowest ever against Bangladesh. However that total was 47 too many for the Bangladesh batsmen all thanks to Y, who conjured his career best figures, and the best ever bowling figures for India in ODIs to take his team to an unimaginable victory.
  • 19. 17*. TEAMS INVOLVED? Cricket touched a new high when a few mountaineers played a T20 charity match to raise £250,000 for the Lord’ Taverners and the Himalayan Trust UK. Both sides took 15 players for the game, along with the medical staff and the groundsmen all of whom made the nine-day trek to reach the pitch. The match was played on a pitch on the Gorak Shep plateau in Nepal, Richard Kirtley, the expedition leader told.
  • 20. 18*. ID X AND Y X played one of the best ever innings, making a brisk 173 off 155 balls – a then-record score to take the English total to 324 setting them up for an easy win at the Nehru Stadium, Pune. However the innings is often forgotten due to Y’s historical achievement on the same day just 150 km away at the Middle Income Group Ground, Mumbai to lead Australia to a 363 run victory over the minnows. Y had now created a list, which had its second entrant in 2010 and currently contains 6 names.
  • 21. 19*. ID CAPTAIN AND TEST MATCH In a memorable test match, the home team were up against it as the opposition had piled on more than 550 runs. He officiated in six World Cups, from 1983 to 2003, and was seldom known to make a poor decision. A unique trait of X that will forever be etched in the minds of cricket viewers is his hopping at the sight of Y on the scoreboard. Whenever a team’s score arrived at 111, or on one of its multiples, X would hop on one leg every few seconds until a run had been added. Having been brought up in Instow, England, it’s a superstition that has stayed with him ever since his club-cricket days.
