#1 CMMI locks small companies out of RFPs!
• $19 Billion dollars in Federal contracts set-aside for small companies
• CMMI is a way for the Federal Government to narrow the field
• The early adopters of CMMI were all large-scale integrators
• Just because they “went big” doesn’t mean you have to
• You don’t have to act like GM to be innovative and successful (or be CMMI ML3)
You have to act like a huge company to achieve a CMMI Rating.
Don’t believe it. It’s about defining how YOUR COMPANY wants to perform.

• They spend millions on systems and tools to support CMMI
• These early adopters did it right – they made what they already did better
• You can do the same thing – be nimble, agile, and lean, better!
• CMMI is on the rise with exta-small companies – you’re the new adopters!
CMMI is only for big companies.
Don’t believe it. CMMI works for ALL companies – regardless of size.

#3 CMMI is too expensive!
• Companies spend 100s of thousands, or millions achieving CMMI ML3
• They buy tools, consultants, training for dozens or hundreds of people
• You can get the same result, right-sized for your budget and size
• Leverage cloud-based tools, virtual consulting, starter kits, and video
• Innovative providers have developed solutions like CMMIxs (CMMIxs.com)
CMMI is too expensive.
Don’t believe it. CMMI can be achieved on a small company budget.

#4 CMMI and Agile don’t go together!
• Early adopters of CMMI practiced phased-based approaches to engineering
• They developed processes based on those approaches when they adopted
CMMI
• Thousands of examples in the industry based on Waterfall
• Few Agile examples were available – so agile companies had no one to emulate
• CMMI and Agile have been proven to be completely compatible
CMMI and Agile don’t go together.
Don’t believe it. CMMI works with any type of method or lifecycle

#5 CMMI requires too much documentation!
• Early adopters used a lot of documents before AND after adopting CMMI
• CMMI’s original contributors were some of the early adopters
• CMMI’s requirement for “evidence” does not always mean “document”
• Information Radiators like Scrum Team Rooms, white boards, sticky notes work
well for evidence also
• Databases, photographs, videos are all good ways to share information
CMMI requires too much documentation.
Don’t believe it. There are better ways to share information (and provide evidence)

#6 CMMI requires us to hire a lot of consultants
• An entire cottage industry has evolved out of the requirement for CMMI
• Some companies are hiring onsite, full-time consultants at high billing rates to
“do CMMI” to them, complete with travel expenses
• Innovative firms use virtual tools to teach you to do it yourself
• New approaches like CMMIxs (CMMIxs.com) provide virtual services at lower
costs
• No consultant can “give” you CMMI, but they can help you learn
CMMI requires us to hire a lot of consultants.
Don’t believe it. There are alternatives to hiring a consultant to “do CMMI to you.”

• Too many companies look upon CMMI as a “plaque on the wall”
• This approach denies you the value you can get for your investment
• It may take longer to achieve the value, but it’s worth it
• CMMI can eliminate chaos, increase productivity, and make projects more
predicable
• As you grow, CMMI can make the difference between success and disaster
CMMI has nothing for us.
Don’t believe it. CMMI is essential for growth and stability.

  • 17. 16Copyright © 2014 Broadsword Solutions Corporation #1 CMMI locks small companies out of RFPs! • $19 Billion dollars in Federal contracts set-aside for small companies • CMMI is a way for the Federal Government to narrow the field • The early adopters of CMMI were all large-scale integrators • Just because they “went big” doesn’t mean you have to • You don’t have to act like GM to be innovative and successful (or be CMMI ML3) You have to act like a huge company to achieve a CMMI Rating. Don’t believe it. It’s about defining how YOUR COMPANY wants to perform.

CMMI is only for big companies. Don’t believe it. CMMI works for ALL companies – regardless of size. #2 CMMI is only for Big Companies

Don’t believe it. CMMI can be achieved on a small company budget.
  • 21. 20Copyright © 2014 Broadsword Solutions Corporation #4 CMMI and Agile don’t go together! • Early adopters of CMMI practiced phased-based approaches to engineering • They developed processes based on those approaches when they adopted CMMI • Thousands of examples in the industry based on Waterfall • Few Agile examples were available – so agile companies had no one to emulate • CMMI and Agile have been proven to be completely compatible CMMI and Agile don’t go together. Don’t believe it. CMMI works with any type of method or lifecycle
  • 22. 21Copyright © 2014 Broadsword Solutions Corporation #5 CMMI requires too much documentation! • Early adopters used a lot of documents before AND after adopting CMMI • CMMI’s original contributors were some of the early adopters • CMMI’s requirement for “evidence” does not always mean “document” • Information Radiators like Scrum Team Rooms, white boards, sticky notes work well for evidence also • Databases, photographs, videos are all good ways to share information CMMI requires too much documentation. Don’t believe it. There are better ways to share information (and provide evidence)
  • 23. 22Copyright © 2014 Broadsword Solutions Corporation #6 CMMI requires us to hire a lot of consultants • An entire cottage industry has evolved out of the requirement for CMMI • Some companies are hiring onsite, full-time consultants at high billing rates to “do CMMI” to them, complete with travel expenses • Innovative firms use virtual tools to teach you to do it yourself • New approaches like CMMIxs (CMMIxs.com) provide virtual services at lower costs • No consultant can “give” you CMMI, but they can help you learn CMMI requires us to hire a lot of consultants. Don’t believe it. There are alternatives to hiring a consultant to “do CMMI to you.”
