2006 – 2012: Incident Support Supervisor
Balfour Beatty, Motorway Network Division
Balfour Beatty acted in a contractor capacity, running the motorways on behalf of the Highways
Agency covering an area referred to as Area 2 (from the M4 at the Severn Bridge to Swindon and the
M5 Tewksbury to Exeter). Originally employed as a General Operative dealing with traffic
management, based on my performance, attitude and knowledge, I worked my way to the position of
Incident Support Supervisor. Any and all incidents occurring that would affect motorway operation
within this area required a response from my team, including emergencies. The contract ended in July
2012, resulting in my redundancy.
2005 – 2012: Incident Support Unit (ISU)
I spent an initial year with the unit as an operative before being promoted to supervisor as the most
experienced crew member on the unit. I was the first supervisor covering this area so I had no
predecessor to take over from. Duties and responsibilities within the role included:
Overseeing the dispatch, coordination and activities of 5 ISU teams covering my area.
Recruitment and skill-matching of new employees, including conducting interviews.
Carrying out detailed inductions, involving issue of personal protection equipment and
explaining all Health and Safety policies. I will also escort staff onto the motorway to ensure
they are competent enough to drive on the network, before briefing them on Method
Statements and Risk Assessments.
Formulating staff development plans, allocating resources effectively to ensure adequate
coverage of all stations with appropriately skilled staff.
Managing, motivating and mentoring team members, delivering training in accordance with
career-development plans, as well as performing annual professional reviews to provide
feedback and address issues with the aim of improving staff performance, confidence and
skills.
Managing staff welfare, ensuring that adequate rest periods are provided during major incident
required sustained attendance.
3. Working alongside other ISU agents to formulate strategy and develop processes.
Communicating and working in close conjunction with other departments and external agencies
to assist in the continual provisional of effective and relevant responses.
Contributing within the consultation process to develop the Company Method Statement
regarding Emergency Traffic Management (ETM) and becoming qualified to place and remove
ETM without the presence of Police or Traffic Officer Services.
Briefing all Operatives in accordance to Company Method Statements, Risk Assessment and
COSHH, ensuring crews fully understand all the briefings they receive.

specialist service providers and barrier crews) and Traffic Management measures to implement.
