- What is Combined Heat and Power (CHP)? CHP (sometimes referred to cogeneration), is the process of recapturing the heat or steam that is produced while making electricity, and making that steam useful in another way. For instance, the steam can be used directly as heat, or it can be used to make chilled water through a chiller and cooling tower. Conceptually, it looks like this.... Grid generation is 30=40% efficient
