6. ARE THERE
DIFFERENT
TYPES OF
MINDFULNESS?
Mindfulness is mind training- training in focusing
your mind or attention. There are three broad
categories of mind training:
1. Focusing your attention on any one item- like
your breathing or the tick tock of a clock.
2. Open awareness or attention- resting in
awareness without being led by your thoughts
(best to be practised after you become
comfortable with 1!).
3. Focusing your attention on positive emotional
states- like compassion and forgiveness.
7. WHAT ARE THE
AIMS OF
MINDFULNESS?
The main aim is to be able to regulate your
emotions, that is to be less reactive to strong
emotional triggers.
Improved emotional regulation leads to a
reduction in problems like stress, anxiety, and
depression- making you more resilient.
Ancillary aims are for physical health, better sleep
and a more productive focused mind.
8. ARE
MINDFULNESS &
EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE
CONNECTED?
The answer is a simple yes. They are an integral
part of the other.
The ultimate goal of mindfulness practices are to
quieten the mind, so as to allow the mental space
to deal with negative and harmful emotions, as
they arise.
The ultimate goal of emotional intelligence
training is to be able to identify emotions as they
arise and to respond in an appropriate and
healthy manner.
9. WHY IS YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND IMPORTANT 1?
The subconscious mind
is the seat of memory,
emotion and beliefs.
Your life experiences are
logged in your memory
bank, along with specific
programmed emotional
responses.
10. WHY IS YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND IMPORTANT?
When you have a bad
experience in work or with
family, the experience is
immediately assessed or
appraised by your subconscious
mind.
The emotional responses
are unconscious
reactions from our
subconscious mind.
Only by learning to identify
emotions and to quieten the
mind with mindfulness
practices, can you begin to
anticipate and not react to
unconscious emotional triggers.
