I currently work as a Construction Health and Safety Coordinator/Building Surveyor
for a central technical team, the Development and Special Projects Team, within
Bristol City Council. As a team we deliver New Social Housing with the necessary
ancillary works, bespoke one-off projects and large refurbishments.
Roles & Responsibilities
My remit currently comprises the implementation of Health & Safety Legislation and
Policy within the context of New Build Social Housing and ‘one-off’ bespoke
projects.
The delivery of H&S training to the team and Asbestos Awareness Training to around
400 staff (with three others).
I act as Contract Administrator and Project Manager on smaller one off projects such
as a roof replacement scheme utilising light weight roofing systems and larger
demolition projects.
Generally
Historically, my role has included the design and management of Disabled Adaptation
Projects for children and adults, comprising traditionally built extensions to council
properties, level access bathrooms and improved access to the properties1
.
The provision of rain screen over-cladding to non-traditionally built (PRC) Local
Authority properties citywide and flat roof to pitch roof conversions2
.
The conversion of Local Authority owned retail units into LA offices, for example the
temporary Customer Service Point in Bedminster, Bristol.
The carrying out of Access Audits on all communal areas accessible by the public
citywide with regard those with Disabilities, my role, as Project Manager is to oversee
all aspects of this project within the context of the Equalities Act 2010.
Lead Surveyor and Contract Administrator on a two-year programme –2008/9 – to
effect repairs to 10no High Rise Block flat roofs using a proprietary liquid coating
system include the upgrading of insulation where needed3
.
Flat roof to pitch roof conversion utilising an independent steel I ‘ring-beam’ to
accommodate new pitched timber trusses and traditional tiles.
Conducting feasibility studies to a number of Garage Sites citywide to determine the
best use of the land.
The Project Management of a PRC Demolition Project involving the demolition of
160 Woolaway PRC social housing properties.

The Team comprises: Line Manager, two Project Managers, four Building Surveyors,
Quantity Surveyor, Health and Safety Coordinator/Surveyor, four Project Officers,
with varying skills and experiences, which collectively deliver the new social housing
and undertake ‘one-off’ bespoke projects.
For example, works currently undertaken by the team include:
- Delivery of new social housing
- Including appointment of Contractors/Consultants

Keeping Fit I like to get to the Gym about three/four times a week.
Reading Mostly Non-Fiction relating to Film Noir, Screwball Comedies and the
Film Industry in general and current affairs.
Music I play the drums.
I enjoy listening to all kinds of genres except trite pop tunes.
Films I enjoy watching films, especially old ones, hence undertaking the
Film Studies at A Level.
Television I really enjoy bad television, especially over produced American
imports.

Purpose of the Job
1. To provide compliance with the legal requirements of health and safety
legislation for all works and projects with the including Construction Design
& Management Regulations within Neighbourhoods Housing Delivery
2. Be responsible for providing the following services:-
- Ensuring compliance with all Health & Safety legislation on site
- Ensure all works carried out by Landlord Services Housing Delivery comply
with the relevant Health & Safety legislation
- Produce, maintain & update the Health & Safety files for projects
- Regular inspections to site to ensure safe working practices
- Assisting contractors, designers, project managers and any other relevant
persons in complying with Health & Safety legislation
- Ensure that all projects are fit for purpose from end to end in relation to Health
& Safety
- Provide training & support to other members of staff in relation to Health &
