CHARTERED ENGINEER - DEFINITION
 Minimum 8 years spent reaching an educational standard and completing
Initial Professional Development (IPD)
 IPD is your:
Training – Learning how to apply engineering principles to the solution of
engineering problems
Experience – Practising as a Professional Engineer in responsible charge of
significant engineering work
(2 years minimum)
THE FORMATION OF A CHARTERED ENGINEER
 Significant Engineering Work
Any experience requiring the exercise of independent engineering judgement:
 Planning, designing, co-ordinating and executing a small project, or
 Undertaking part of a larger project whilst understanding the whole project, or
 Undertaking novel, complex and / or multidisciplinary work
THE FORMATION OF A CHARTERED ENGINEER
1. Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and
understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology
2. Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of
engineering problems

 Interviews are held in Clyde Road and some Regional Branches nationwide
 Three Interviewers who are Chartered Engineers approved by the Board of
Examiners
 One hour in duration for Chartered Engineer
 45 minutes duration for Associate Engineer and Engineering Technician
PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEW
 Uninterrupted 10 minute verbal presentation at beginning of interview
 Objective is to satisfy interviewers that you have achieved an acceptable level in the
competences for your title
 Quality Assurance
 Notification of results normally within four weeks
 Handy tips for the Interview in Guidance Notes
PROFESSIONAL INTERVIEW
 Finalists nominated by their Interview
